This possibility has heretofore been largely ignored, owing doubtless to the extensive obliteration of those characteristics which are generally regarded as most typical of eruptive rocks. Schistose or banded structure, however, can now hardly be considered as necessarily an indication of sedimentary origin. The minerals which are most characteristic of the so-called crystalline schists have been repeatedly shown to be derived from the alteration of igneous as well as of aqueous formations. These minerals only represent the final and most stable combination of certain elements under certain conditions, and are quite independent of the earlier combinations in which these elements may have existed. A lava bed and a clay bank, if the two may be supposed to have originally had the same chemical composition, might, under the influence of the same metamorphic agencies, ultimately give rise to the same rock in spite of original differences in structure or mineralogical composition. Stratification may be obliterated by metamorphism, while foliation, or even a banded structure, may, by the same means, be secondarily induced. Neither structure nor mineral composition can be taken as an infallible guide in determining the origin or the age of rocks.

The present paper is intended as a contribution to our knowledge of a particular phase of metamorphism in eruptive rocks, i. e., that one which is dependent on the secondary development of hornblende by the paramorphism or pseudomorphism of pyroxene. This is a change the frequency of which renders it of fundamental geological importance. It has already received considerable attention from many eminent geologists, but no locality heretofore studied seems to have afforded opportunities for tracing out every stage in the process of alteration superior to those offered by the area of massive rocks west and northwest of the city of Baltimore. Here, covering a district of over fifty square miles, the unchanged pyroxene rock and its resultant hornblendic equivalent occur in the most intimate relations. Exposures of both rocks in situ are numerous, and the opportunity of following out the gradual transition of one into the other is proportionately great.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/b28","usgsCitation":"Williams, G.H., 1886, The gabbros and associated hornblende rocks occurring in the neighborhood of Baltimore, Maryland: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 28, 78 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/b28.","productDescription":"78 p. The detailed study of certain small areas in these ranges, however, raised a number of questions as to the age and stratigraphical relations of the various series of beds, which it seemed necessary to answer as well as circumstances permitted. Having reached certain conclusions, for the most part on structural grounds, it became indispensable for me to obtain the co-operation of an expert paleontologist. At my solicitation, and with the approval of the director, Dr. C. A. White consented to visit the field with me. He passed several months of the summer of 1884 in studying my collections and the occurrence of fossils in place with reference to the points at issue. His results appear in Bulletin No. 15, that and this being complementary to one another. I had the great satisfaction of finding that Dr. White was led from a purely paleontological position to conclusions entirely accordant with those at which I had already arrived on structural grounds. His long experience as a general geologist also made his agreement with me as to the structural indications a welcome confirmation of my opinions. These studies, in conjunction with many observations made by earlier workers on the Pacific Coast, particularly those of the State Geological Survey of California, under Prof. J. D. Whitney, have led to some seemingly well established general conclusions of interest. The more purely geological results will be presented in the following pages, in the imperfect form in which alone it will be possible to give them until an immense amount of additional work shall have been done.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/b19","usgsCitation":"Becker, G.F., 1885, Notes on the We have ourselves, indeed, written at some length with regard to these rocks, and one of us has even attempted a general account of the series as a whole. In the course of our investigations each of us has been obliged to turn away from very many tempting problems in structure and genesis, where there was every promise of successful solutions if only the element of time had not been lacking. Not the least important among the problems which we have hitherto been thus obliged to pass by is that of the exact nature of the structural details at the contact line between the Keweenaw Series and the so-called Eastern Sandstone. This contact line one of us had already examined sufficiently to satisfy himself of the general relations of the two formations concerned, but he had not been able to go further than this. Recently, however, the opportunity has offered for us to make together some additional observations on this line of contact, with results that have proved to be of so conclusive a nature that we think it well to publish them in the form of a bulletin.

In what follows the several places at which this junction has been studied by us are taken up in order from east to west. Preceding our own descriptions of each one of these points, we give the descriptions of others, so far as we are acquainted with them. Following these detailed descriptions, we then give an account and a discussion of the various views which have been held with regard to the relations of the two formations concerned, and then close with our own conclusions on this subject, as also in general upon the origin of the phenomena observed along the contact line.

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/b23","usgsCitation":"Irving, R.D., and Chamberlin, T.C., 1885, Observations on the junction between the Eastern sandstone and the Keweenaw series on Keweenaw Point, Lake Superior: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 23, 124 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/b23.","productDescription":"124 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":165991,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/23/b23.jpg"},{"id":340519,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/23/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan","otherGeospatial":"Keweenaw Point, Lake Superior","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -88.505859375,\n              47.16637604771991\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.70248413085938,\n              47.16637604771991\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.70248413085938,\n              47.49308072945064\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.505859375,\n              47.49308072945064\n            ],\n            [\n              -88.505859375,\n              47.16637604771991\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afbe4b07f02db696411","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Irving, Roland Duer","contributorId":23581,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Irving","given":"Roland","email":"","middleInitial":"Duer","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":213534,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Chamberlin, Thomas C.","contributorId":80734,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chamberlin","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":213535,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
