Moderate supplies of potable ground water are believed to be available in the Roadtown and Paraquita Bay areas, and small, possibly brackish supplies in the Long Look and West End areas of Tortola. Two water bearing units of the same hydrologic system have the potential of yielding water to wells: 1) alluvial deposits, possibly as thick as 60 feet and locally containing beds and lenses of gravel 1 to 5 feet thick; and 2) fractured and jointed bedrock, especially where it is overlain by alluvium.
The most productive ground-water areas are expected to be the lower reaches of the larger valleys. Here the alluvial deposits are thickest and the valleys often follow the trace of fault or fracture systems in the bedrock. A potential yield of 195,000 gpd (U.S. gallons per day) is estimated to be available in the Road Bay area, 55,000 gpd in the Long Look area, and 8,000 gpd in the West End area.
Sites are suggested for test and monitoring wells in the lower courses of six of the valleys on the south coast.

Dating of the warm interval is based on eight radiocarbon dates. Although these do not provide tight control for either the beginning or the end, they permit the interpretation that the warm event began at the start of the worldwide, postglacial warming and that it ended at the time of the Anivik Lake glacial readvance in the Brooks Range. If this is correct, the early Recent warm interval and the \"postglacial thermal maximum\" recognized by Livingstone in the Brooks Range were separated by a period of cooler climate. Deposits 7200 and 3600 years old also record moments when the climate was warmer than at present in coastal northwestern Alaska. Although these may record a continuation of the early Recent warm period, it seems more likely that they represent later and separate brief intervals of warmer climate. A postglacial thermal maximum between 6000 and 3000 years ago is recorded by pollen profiles in the Brooks Range, but is not clearly recorded in the coastal areas of northwestern Alaska. We suggest that as sea level rose to near its present position, the accompanying maritime climate lowered summer temperatures in this coastal area during the time at which areas farther inland were experiencing the high temperatures of the postglacial thermal maximum.

On the basis of this stratification the waters of the ground‐water reservoir were divided into a shallow zone of oxidation, A; a deep zone of reduction, C; and an intermediate and unstable zone, B, in which waters from above and below are mixed. Ground water from zones A and C generally is almost free of iron, whereas water from zone B generally contains objectionable amounts. This zoning is explained by recent laboratory work and theoretical data on iron in natural waters. Wells constructed to draw only from zones A or C should yield water relatively free of iron.

The Tertiary limestone has a total thickness of several thousand feet and ranges in age from Paleocene to Pliocene. The part of the limestone that represents a hydrologic unit, as much as 1000 feet thick, ranges in age from middle Eocene to middle Miocene. That unit is the principal artesian aquifer in Florida and southeastern Georgia. It is also an aquifer, but of lesser importance, in South Carolina, North Carolina, and Alabama. In southeastern Florida the Quaternary limestone forms a shallow, although highly productive, aquifer.
In general, the Tertiary formations dip gently toward the coast, except where the regional dip is interrupted by folds such as the Cape Fear arch, the Ocala uplift, and the Chattahoochee anticline, or by faults such as those on the Ocala uplift.
A piezometric map showing the head of water in the principal artesian aquifer in Florida and southeastern Georgia reveals chief areas of recharge where limestone crops out in interstream areas and where sinkholes breach overlying beds; it reveals principal discharge areas in certain stream valleys, springs, and offshore.
Lateral movement of the water in the limestone is generally controlled by the hydraulic gradient to the nearest discharge area. The movement may be either controlled by or independent of faults and folds; it may be along joints for short distances. Solution by downward movement of water in the zone of aeration to the water table has formed vertical tubular openings or shafts. Lateral movement of the water from areas of recharge to areas of discharge has formed caves and other solution channels, chiefly in the upper part of the zone of saturation. Since they were formed, some caves have been drowned, and others have been exposed in the zone of aeration as the water rose and fell, chiefly in Pleistocene time. The principal aquifer in Florida probably has caves and solution channels comparable in size and extent to those of Mammoth Cave, Kentucky; however, only a small percentage of these are above the water table at the present time.
In a large part of the region the most noticeable change in chemical quality of the water in the limestone resulting from circulation of water is the freshening accompanying removal of salty water from the aquifer.
Changes in sea level during Pleistocene time have raised and lowered the water table; thus the position of the upper part of the zone of saturation, in which conditions were most favorable for solution and for the formation of cavities, has changed repeatedly. At the lowest stand of the Pleistocene sea, it is conceivable that the water level in part of the limestone in north-central Florida was a few hundred feet lower than at present. The present pattern of solution openings probably was developed in Pleistocene time.

Low-temperature phases, which break down at temperatures between 67 degrees and 119 degrees C, are chalcocite, stromeyerite, Cu (sub O.8) Ag (sub 1.2) S, jalpaite, and acanthite. High-temperature phases, all cation-disordered, are hexagonal close-packed (high chalcocite), face-centered cubic (high digenite), and body-centered cubic (argentite) in order of increasing Ag. Above 593 degrees C, the face-centered cubic phase occupies the whole field of the join, extending also to more sulfur-rich compositions. Although reaction rates are extremely rapid in the system, and the high-temperature phases are unquenchable, pseudomorphs and textures in natural specimens can be informative.

eruptive activity at Kīlauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes, on the Island of Hawaiʻi, were compiled by HVO staff for most years from 1912 through early 1966. In addition to descriptive observations, the record books also contain hundreds of annotated photographs and sketches, as well as temperature and transit measurements. When photographs are included, the camera settings and film types used are noted. The field notes, sketches, and photographs used to compile the record books provide an unparalleled record of eruptive activity and were the basis for published newspaper reports and periodic bulletins, such as the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory bulletins and The volcano letter.
HVO staff also painstakingly prepared a second copy of each early record book, virtually identical to the original, complete with photographs and sketches. The original version of the record book was kept at HVO, while the duplicate went to the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association, which was created by a group of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi, businessmen to promote HVO’s work. The Hawaiian Volcano Research Association, which dissolved decades ago, held the duplicate books in Honolulu, where they were more readily accessible to the public. After 1923, HVO stopped duplicating the books—at least, no duplicate records for subsequent years have been found. During the decade of the 1940s, preparation of the record books stopped altogether. In 1952, compilation of the record books resumed and continued, with long gaps, until early 1966. Entries in these later volumes are sparse, and these books are little more than photo albums of the episodic eruptions of Kīlauea.
The original record books were held at HVO and, later, at Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. In 1972, the original record books for the years 1912 through 1939 were transferred to the Bishop Museum, in Honolulu, for safekeeping. These record books are now stored in archival boxes at that institution (accession number 172.265). The duplicate set of record books held by the Hawaiian Volcano Research Association were bound into volumes at an unknown date and turned over to the U.S. Geological Survey. This set of record books, spanning 1912 through 1923, is now housed in the rare book room of the U.S. Geological Survey Library in Reston, Virginia (catalog number 220(950) H3d). The record books for 1952 through early 1966 remain in storage at HVO. After 1955, typed annotations were no longer placed in the record books, and only photographs, most with captions, were included. Although the volumes titled “Record Book” end with the 1955 volume, the photograph albums that followed are similar, and the record book designation is retained for simplicity. Note that the photographs in these albums were not all originally arranged in chronological order.

The present study, based on almost 24,000 fish collected by various means in 1952-55 in or near the island area of western Lake Erie was undertaken to provide information on the role of shad in the bionomics of the region.\r\nThe annulus of the gizzard shad scale is a valid year-mark. It is laid down in May-July, a little later in the older than in the younger fish. The body-scale relation is linear with an intercept of 22.1 mm. on the axis of standard length. Age-groups 0, I, and II were abundantly represented in the samples. Age-group III was much less well represented, and older fish were extremely scarce. The oldest shad seen belonged to the VI-group.\r\nThe seasonal growth was most rapid in July-August and growth was much reduced or nil in January-April. Males attained the following average standard lengths (in millimeters) at the end of the indicated years of life: 1-141; 2-273; 3-313; 4-343; 5-349. For females these values were 1-140; 2-285; 3-335; 4-364; 5-386.\r\nThe weight of the gizzard shad increased as the 3.07053 power of the length. The length-weight relation varied seasonally, annually, and, near the spawning season, according to sex and state of gonads.\r\nOnly a few precocious male and female gizzard shad attain sexual maturity as age-group I. Almost all males and a good percentage of females mature at age II and only rarely are III-group shad immature. Development of the egg and seasonal changes of the ovary are described. Egg production is highest in the II group-average of 378,900 per individual and 689 per gram of body weight. Spawning takes place from early June into July and is most intensive near mid-June. Heaviest spawning is at water temperatures of 67A?F. or more. Early development to the attainment of the adult shape is described; particular attention is given to the development of the alimentary tract.\r\nThe anatomy of the digestive tract in the adult is described, and comments are offered on the function of such organs as the pharyngeal pouches and the caeca. Tests were made for digestive enzymes in different parts of the tract. The gizzard shad is a filter feeder.
