II. Aspects of pathogenesis","docAbstract":"<p>During the 10 to 15 years investigators from Europe and eastern United States have reported fish diseases of virus etiology. Rucker et al. in 1953 were the first to report a disease of possible virus origin in fish in the western United States. Since then many workers in the western states have described various epizootics caused by transmissible and filterable agents. &nbsp;The etiology and pathology of epizootics reported to date have been three viral diseases: (1) specific for sockeye salmon (Onchorhynchus nerka), (2) specific for chinook salmon (O. tshawytacha); and (3) isolated from rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri). brook trout (Salvalinus fontinalis). and cutthroat trout ( Salmo clarkii). &nbsp;The most recent historical, etiological and morphological study of diseases of viral and possible viral origin occurring the West has been reported in detail by Parisot et al.</p>\n<p>With the exception of two investigations, histopathological accounts have been brief and cursory and, to date, pathogenesos of these viral diseases have not been recorded.</p>\n<p>This study was undertaken to initiate a series concerning pathogeneses of infectious diseases of salmonids. &nbsp;The two viral diseases covered in this paper are the Oregon sockeye disease (OSD) and Sacramento River chinook disease (SRCD). Some preliminary data on pathology of the corresponding material from the hatchery epizootics will also be described and discussed.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"Wiley","doi":"10.1111/j.1749-6632.1965.tb14298.x","usgsCitation":"Yasutake, W.T., Parisot, T., and Klontz, G., 1965, Virus diseases of salmonidae in the western United States. Knowledge of the changes in quantity and chemical quality of base flow is necessary for any evaluation of the effectiveness of the river channel in conveying water released from potential upstream reservoirs. The investigation was made November 23-25, 1964, during a period when evaporation and transpiration were small and the discharge past the stream-gaging station, Nueces River below Uvalde, was constant. Floods of September 1964 contributed considerably to the recharge of the alluvium in the reach investigated, resulting in a higher than average base flow.","language":"English","publisher":"Texas Water Development Board","publisherLocation":"San Antonio, TX","collaboration":"Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Texas Water Development Board","usgsCitation":"Reeves, W., Rohne, P., Blakey, J., and Gilbert, C.R., 1965, Base-flow studies Nueces River, Texas quantity and quality, November 23-25, 1964: Report 2, v, 7 p.","productDescription":"v, 7 p.","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":275318,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70047175.png"},{"id":275317,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.twdb.state.tx.us/publications/reports/numbered_reports/doc/R2/R2.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Nueces River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -106.6,25.8 ], [ -106.6,36.5 ], [ -93.5,36.5 ], [ -93.5,25.8 ], [ -106.6,25.8 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51efa5f0e4b0b09fbe58f184","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Reeves, W.E.","contributorId":79518,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Reeves","given":"W.E.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":481231,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Rohne, P. The basin is not typical of southwestern Oklahoma in that it includes massive mountains and scattered knobs and peaks of the Wichita Mountains. Alluvium covers much of the southern half of the basin but is restricted to the major tributary valleys in the northern half. The upper part of the alluvium is predominantly silt and clay; the lower part is predominantly very fine to medium sand and has a basal stratum of coarse sand and gravel. The average thickness of the flood-plain deposit is about 37 feet. The flood-plain deposits and terrace deposits in the southern part of the basin occur together in the subsurface as an integral unit. Principal recharge to the flood-plain deposits is through infiltration of precipitation and surface runoff, and through percolation from adjoining aquifers, principally the terrace deposits. Principal discharge from the flood-plain deposits is through seepage into Otter Creek by transpiration by vegetation, and by pumping from wells. The city of Snyder pumps about 200,000 gallons per day (gpd) from the alluvium of East Otter Creek during the winter and spring, and about 400,000 gpd during the summer and fall. Irrigation is concentrated principally on the flood plain common to both Otter Creek and North Fork Red River.","language":"English","publisher":"Oklahoma Water Resources Board","publisherLocation":"Oklahoma City, OK","collaboration":"Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Oklahoma Water Resources Board","usgsCitation":"Hollowell, J.R., 1965, Ground water in the alluvium of Otter Creek Basin, Oklahoma: Bulletin 27, 15 p.","productDescription":"15 p.","numberOfPages":"20","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":275311,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70047171.png"},{"id":275307,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.owrb.ok.gov/studies/reports/reports_pdf/bulletin%2027_otter%20creek.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oklahoma","otherGeospatial":"Otter Creek Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -103.0,33.62 ], [ -103.0,37.0 ], [ -94.43,37.0 ], [ -94.43,33.62 ], [ -103.0,33.62 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"51efa5f1e4b0b09fbe58f18e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hollowell, Jerrald R.","contributorId":51278,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hollowell","given":"Jerrald","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":481216,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Well yields range from only a few gallons per minute in some of the sandy clay beds to more than 240 gallons per minute (gpm) in sections where a higher percentage of coarse material has been deposited. Test pumping indicates that wells yielding 60 to 150 gpm could be developed in about 50 percent of the valley and wells yielding more than 150 gpm in about 10 percent. The higher yields generally occur along a relatively narrow buried channel where the alluvial deposits are thicker and coarser than the surrounding alluvium. This area is not discernible at the surface and must be located by test drilling.","language":"English","publisher":"Oklahoma Water Resources Board","publisherLocation":"Oklahoma City, OK","collaboration":"Open-File Report Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Bureau of Indian Affairs","usgsCitation":"Hart, D., 1965, Ground water in the alluvial deposits of the Washita River between Clinton and Anadarko, Oklahoma: Bulletin 26, 25 p.","productDescription":"25 p.","numberOfPages":"31","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277006,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70047832.png"},{"id":277005,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.owrb.ok.gov/studies/reports/reports_pdf/Bulletin%2026_Ground%20Water%20in%20Alluvial%20Deposits_Washita.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oklahoma","otherGeospatial":"Washita River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -103.0,33.62 ], [ -103.0,37.0 ], [ -94.43,37.0 ], [ -94.43,33.62 ], [ -103.0,33.62 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"521c78e7e4b01458f7842947","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hart, D.L. The basin is typical of southwestern Oklahoma with nearly level plains broken by gentle rolling hills and low escarpments, except for the extreme southern part, where seven granite and gabbroic knobs and ridges of the Wichita Mountains protrude. The alluvium averages 40 feet in thickness and is restricted to the flood plain of Elk Creek and its major tributaries. The upper part of the alluvium is predominantly silt and clay. The lower part is predominantly very fine to medium sand. The flood plain is bounded by bedrock of Permian age except in T. 5 N. where it is bounded also by sporadic knobs and ridges composed of Precambrian rocks. Recharge to the alluvium is principally through infiltration of precipitation and surface runoff from adjacent highlands, and through percolation from the Quartermaster Formation in the northern part of the basin. Discharge is principally by seepage into the creek and transpiration by vegetation. Discharge by pumpage is small, principally for domestic and stock supply.","language":"English","publisher":"Oklahoma Water Resources Board","publisherLocation":"Oklahoma City, OK","collaboration":"Prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Oklahoma Water Resources Board","usgsCitation":"Hollowell, J.R., 1965, Ground water in the alluvium of Elk Creek basin, Oklahoma: Bulletin 28, 12 p.","productDescription":"12 p.","numberOfPages":"17","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":277003,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70047831.png"},{"id":277001,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://www.owrb.ok.gov/studies/reports/reports_pdf/Bulletin%2028_Elk%20Creek.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oklahoma","otherGeospatial":"Elk Creek Basin","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -103.0,33.62 ], [ -103.0,37.0 ], [ -94.43,37.0 ], [ -94.43,33.62 ], [ -103.0,33.62 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"521c78e8e4b01458f784294e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hollowell, Jerrald R.","contributorId":51278,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hollowell","given":"Jerrald","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":483094,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The fauna in 1961 was composed principally of Oligochaeta, Tendipedidae (7 genera), Sphaeriidac (15 species), and Gastropoda (at least 8 species). Stations with a high density of Oligochaeta were near the principal sources of pollution (Maumee, Raisin, and Detroit rivers). Stations with fewer Oligochacta and a more diverse fauna were farthest from the river mouths. The population density of the burrowing mayfly,&nbsp;</span><i>Hexagenia</i><span>&nbsp;spp., was reduced from an average of 139/m</span>2<span>&nbsp;in 1930 to less than 1/m</span>2<span>&nbsp;in 1961. Organisms more abundant near the sources of pollution than in other areas were, in addition to Oligochaeta: the midge,&nbsp;</span><i>Procladius;</i><span>&nbsp;the fingernail clam,&nbsp;</span><i>Sphaerium transversum;</i><span>&nbsp;and the snail,&nbsp;</span><i>Valvata sincera</i><span>&nbsp;(sens. lat.). Organisms sensitive to pollution, such as amphipods, mayfly nymphs, caddisfly larvae, and naiad clams, were scarce and usually at the more lakeward stations. The most important changes in fauna during the 31-year period were: ninefold increase in Oligochacta; fourfold increase in Tendipedidae; twofold increase in Sphaeriidae; sixfold increase in Gastropoda; and a reduction of&nbsp;</span><i>Hexagenia</i><span>&nbsp;to less than 1% of former abundance. For convenience there are also included records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U. S. Geological Survey, under the direction of W. L. Heckler, district engineer, Surface Water Branch. This report is the fourth in a series presenting, annually, basic data on surfacewater records by States. Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U. S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in New Mexico were contained in Parts 7, 8, and 9 of that series. Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data will be released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these basic-data reports will be limited and primarily for local needs. The records later will be published in Geological Survey water-supply papers at 5-year intervals. These 5-year water-supply papers will show daily discharge and will be compiled on the same geographical areas previously used for the annual series; however, some of the 14 parts of conterminous United States will be further subdivided.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Santa Fe, NM","doi":"10.3133/wdrNM641","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State of New Mexico and with other agencies","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1965, Water resources data for New Mexico, water year 1964; Part I.
