The maps are, in a sense, a historical summary, showing concentrations observed to 1956 and reported in published references. Data on chemical quality of stream water has been obtained at various times and at various places; for no single year does the record even approach complete coverage of the area shown on the maps. It was necessary, therefore, to combine the records of many years in order to achieve this summary.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Although the initial rate of withdrawal from the well field will be about 8 mgd (million gallons per day), the ultimate design capacity of the field is 20 mgd. A study of sand samples, drillers' logs, and geophysical logs collected during preliminary test drilling at the site for the Lichterman well field was used as a basis for defining three zones of sand favorable for the construction of high-capacity (1,000 gallons per minute or more) water wells. The three zones occur in the '500-foot' sand and are here designated (in descending order) as zone A, zone B, and zone C. The depth to the top of these zones below land surface has the following ranges: zone A, 125 to 225 feet; zone B, 200 to 350 feet; and zone C, 700 to 775 feet. Zones A and B range from 0 to 100 feet in thickness, and zone C ranges from 10 to 100 feet in thickness. Within the well field proper these zones are expected to react to the stress of pumping as separate hydrologic units, but outside the well field the three zones are expected to react as a single hydrologic unit. \r\n\r\nThe '500-foot' sand in the Germantown-Collierville area is recharged chiefly by precipitation on the outcrop area of the sand to the east, but the evidence indicates that additional recharge is entering the aquifer from the Wolf River. In spite of this additional recharge, water levels in the '500-foot' sand are declining at an average rate of about two-thirds of a foot per year, owing to municipal and industrial pumpage in the Memphis area. However, this decline is not expected to alter the excellent quality of the water in the '500-foot' sand at the site of the Lichterman well field. \r\n\r\nPumping in the Lichterman well field will create a cone of depression in the free-water (piezometric) surface of the '500-foot' sand. The decline in water levels will be directly proportional to the rate of pumping and inversely proportional to the distance from the well field. The resultant changes in hydraulic gradients will alter the direction of ground-water movement in the vicinity of the well field and increase the rate of movement toward the well field from areas of recharge. The lowering of water levels might also accelerate locally the changeover from artesian conditions to semiartesian or water-table conditions in the '500-foot' sand. \r\n\r\nWithin the well field proper, water levels are expected to fluctuate as individual wells are turned on and off to accommodate the demand for water. The presence of clay beds in the aquifer will tend to limit the specific capacity of individual production wells, but could serve to limit interference between wells if adjacent wells are screened in different sections of the aquifer. Interference between wells might also be lessened by pumping those wells having the highest specific capacities for the longest periods of time.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/wsp1819B","usgsCitation":"Nyman, D.J., 1965, Predicted hydrologic effects of pumping from the Lichterman Well Field in the Memphis Area, Tennessee: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1819, 26 p. , https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1819B.","productDescription":"26 p. The Santa Monica Mountains are the southwesternmost mainland part of the Transverse Ranges province, the east-trending features of which transect the otherwise relatively uniform northwesterly trend of the geomorphic and geologic features of coastal California. The south margin of the Transverse Ranges is marked by the Santa Monica fault system, which extends eastward near the 34th parallel for at least 145 miles from near Santa Cruz Island to the San Andreas fault zone. In the central Santa Monica Mountains area the Santa Monica fault system includes the Malibu Coast fault and Malibu Coast zone of deformation on the north; from the south it includes an inferred fault--the Anacapa fault--considered to follow an east-trending topographic escarpmemt on the sea floor about 5 miles south of the Malibu Coast fault. The low-lying terrain south of the fault system, including the Los Angeles basin and the largely submerged Continental Borderland offshore, are dominated by northwest-trending structural features.\r\n\r\nThe Malibu Coat zone is a wide, east-trending band of asymmetrically folded, sheared, and faulted bedrock that extends for more than 20 miles along the north margin of the Santa Monica fault system west of Santa Monica. Near the north margin of the Malibu Coast zone the north-dipping, east-trending Malibu Coast fault juxtaposes unlike, in part contemporaneous sedimentary rock sections; it is inferred to be the near-surface expression of a major crustal boundary between completely unrelated basement rocks. Comparison of contemporaneous structural features and stratigraphic sections (Late Cretaceous to middle Miocene sedimentary, rocks and middle Miocene volcanic and intrusive igneous rocks on the north; middle and upper Miocene sedimentary and middle Miocene volcanic rocks on the south) across the fault demonstrates that neither strike slip of less than 25 miles nor high-angle dip slip can account for this juxtaposition. Instead, the Malibu Coast fault is inferred to have been the locus of large-magnitude, north-south oriented, horizontal shortening (north, or upper, block thrust over south block). This movement occurred at or near the northern boundary of the Continental Borderland, the eastern boundary of which is inferred to be the northwest-trending known-active Newport-Inglewood zone of en echelon right lateral strike-slip faults in the western Los Angeles basin.\r\n\r\nLocal structural features and their relation to regional features, such as those in the Malibu Coast zone, form the basis for the interpretation that the Malibu Coast fault has acted chiefly as a thrust fault. Within the Malibu Coast zone, on both sides of the Malibu Coast fault, structural features in rocks that range in age from Late Cretaceous to late Miocene are remarkably uniform in orientation. The predominant trend of bedding, axial surfaces of numerous asymmetric folds, locally pervasive shear surfaces, and faults is approximately east-west and their predominant dip is northward.. The axes of the folds plunge gently east or west. Evidence from faults and shears within the zone indicates that relative movement on most of these was north (upper) over south. Beyond the Malibu Coast zone to the north and south the rocks entirely lack the asymmetric folds, overturned beds, and the locally abundant shears that characterize the rocks within the zone; these rocks were therefore not subjected to the same deforming forces that existed near the Malibu Coast fault. Movement on the Malibu Coast fault and deformation in the Malibu Coast zone occurred chiefly during the interval between late Miocene and late Pleistocene time. The youngest-known faulting in the Malibu Coast zone is late Pl","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr65179","usgsCitation":"Yerkes, R.F., and Wentworth, C.M., 1965, Structure, Quaternary history, and general geology of the Corral Canyon area, Los Angeles County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 65-179, ix, 215, [13] p. :ill., maps ;27 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr65179.","productDescription":"ix, 215, [13] p. :ill., maps ;27 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":312,"text":"Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":45750,"rank":414,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-15.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45751,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45747,"rank":411,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45748,"rank":412,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-13.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45749,"rank":413,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-14.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45740,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":150529,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":45736,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45737,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45738,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45739,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45742,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45743,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45741,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45744,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45745,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45746,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0179/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b08e4b07f02db69b31a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Yerkes, R. The area studied includes the segment of the Humboldt River valley between the Comus and Rose Creek gaging stations. It is almost entirely in Humboldt County in north-central Nevada, and is about 200 miles downstream from the headwaters of the Humboldt River. \r\n\r\nAgriculture is the major economic activity in the area. Inasmuch as the valley lowlands receive an average of about 8 inches of precipitation per year and because the rate of evaporation from free-water surfaces is about six times the average annual precipitation, all crops in the area (largely forage crops) are irrigated. About 85 percent of the cultivated land is irrigated with Humboldt River water; the remainder is irrigated from about 20 irrigation wells. \r\n\r\nThe consolidated rocks of the uplifted fault-block mountains are largely barriers to the movement of ground water and form ground-water and surface-water divides. Unconsolidated deposits of late Tertiary and Quaternary age underlie the valley lowlands to a maximum depth of about 5,000 feet. These deposits are in hydraulic continuity with the Humboldt River and store and transmit most of the economically recoverable ground water. Included in the valley fill is a highly permeable sand and gravel deposit having a maximum thickness of about 90-100 feet; it underlies the flood plain and bordering terraces throughout most of the project area. This deposit is almost completely saturated and contains about 500,000 acre-feet of ground water in storage. The Humboldt River is the source of 90-95 percent of the surface-water inflow to the area. In water years 1949-62 the average annual streamflow at the Comus gaging station at the upstream margin of the area was 172,100 acre-feet; outflow at the Rose Creek gaging station averaged about 155,400 acre-feet. Accordingly, the measured loss of Humboldt River streamflow averaged nearly 17,000 acre-feet per year. Most of this water was transpired by phreatophytes and crops, evaporated from free-water surfaces, and evaporated from bare soil. \r\n\r\nInasmuch as practically no tributary streamflow normally discharges into the river in the Winnemucca reach and because pumpage is virtually negligible during the nonirrigation season, gains and losses of streamflow during most of the year reflect the close interrelation of the Humboldt River and the groundwater reservoir. An estimated average of about 14,000 acre-feet per year of ground-water underflow moves toward the Humboldt River from tributary areas. Much of this water discharges into the Humboldt River; hovever, some evaporates or is transpired before reaching the river. \r\n\r\nMore than 65 percent of the average annual flow of the river horn-ally occurs in April, May, and June owing to the spring runoff. The stage of the river generally rises rapidly during these months causing water to move from the river to the ground-water reservoir. Furthermore, the period of high streamflow normally coincides with the irrigation season, and much of the excess irrigation water diverted from the river percolates downward to the zone of saturation. \r\n\r\nThe net measured loss of streamflow in April-June, which averaged about 24,000 acre-feet in water years 1949-62, was about 7,000 acre-feet more than the average annual loss. The estimated net average annual increase of ground water in storage during these months in this period was on the order of 10,000 acre-feet. Following the spring runoff and the irrigation season, normally in July, some of the ground water stored in the flood-plain deposits during the spring runoff begins to discharge into the river. In this area ground water is the principal source of water for nearly all rural families, most public supplies, several coal mines and coal processing plants, and one bottling plant. \r\n\r\nThe major aquifers in the Jenkins-Whitesburg area are the Breathitt and Lee Formations of Pennsylvanian age. Other aquifers range in age from Devonian to Quaternary but are not important in this area because they occur at great depth or yield little or no water. The Breathitt Formation occurs throughout the area except along the crest and slopes of Pine Mountain and where it is covered by unconsolidated material of Quaternary age. The Breathitt Formation consists of shale, sandstone, and lesser amounts of coal and associated underclay. The yield of wells penetrating the Breathitt Formation ranges from less than 1 to 330 gallons per minute. Well yield is controlled by the type and depth of well, character of the aquifer, and topography of the well site. Generally, deep wells drilled in valleys of perennial streams offer the best potential for high yields. Although enough water for a minimum domestic supply (more than 100 gallons per day) may be obtained from shale, all high-yielding wells probably obtain water from vertical joints and from bedding planes which are best developed in sandstone. About 13 percent of the wells inventoried in the Breathitt Formation failed to supply enough water for a minimum domestic supply. Most of these are shallow dug wells or drilled wells on hillsides or hilltops. Abandoned coal mines are utilized as large infiltration galleries and furnish part of the water for several public supplies. \r\n\r\nThe chemical quality of water from the Breathitt Formation varies considerably from place to place, but the water generally is acceptable for most domestic and industrial uses. Most water is a calcium magnesium bicarbonate or sodium bicarbonate type, and nearly all sampled water contained enough iron to stain cooking and laundry utensils. The water ranged from soft to very hard, and only one well in the Breathitt Formation produced salty water. The absence of salty water may be due to abundant fractures which are associated with the Pine Mountain fault and which have allowed fresh water to enter the formation. The Lee Formation underlies the Cumberland Mountain section and is exposed along the crest and southeast slope of Pine Mountain. The Lee Formation consists of massive sandstone and conglomerate with thin beds of shale and a few thin coal seams.\r\n\r\nAlthough the Lee Formation is tapped by only a few wells in this area, it is potentially an important aquifer. Wells penetrating the Lee Formation in the Cumberland Mountain section would probably yield water under artesian pressure.\r\n\r\nUnlike most water from the Lee Formation in other part.3 of eastern Kentucky, all water from the Lee Formation in the Jenkins-Whitesburg area is fresh. All water from the Lee Formation contained more than 0.3 parts per million of iron and ranged from soft to moderately hard.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1809P","usgsCitation":"Chinn, S.S., 1965, Water-supply potential from an asphalt-lined catchment near Holualoa Kona, Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1809, iv, 25 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1809P.","productDescription":"iv, 25 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137947,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1809p/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25912,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1809p/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49e2e4b07f02db5e4bd7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Chinn, Salwyn S.W.","contributorId":91082,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chinn","given":"Salwyn","email":"","middleInitial":"S.W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143231,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This aquifer normally discharges about 430 tons of dissolved minerals daily into the river of which about 370 tons was sodium chloride. \r\n\r\nThe Malaga Bend Experimental Salinity Alleviation Project, authorized by the U.S. Congress in 1958, Public Law 85-333,is an attempt to determine if the salinity content of the Pecos River below Malaga Bend can be decreased by reducing the inflow of saline water into the river at Malaga Bend by pumping from the brine aquifer. \r\n\r\nConstruction for the project was supervised by the Bureau of Reclamation, and the collection of data and its interpretation were the responsibility cooperatively of the U. S. Geological Survey and the Pecos River Commission.","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr6535","usgsCitation":"Cox, E., and Havens, J., 1965, A progress report on the Malaga Bend Experimental Salinity Alleviation Project, Eddy County, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 65-35, 92 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6535.","productDescription":"92 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":179274,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":86878,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-1.pdf","text":"Figure 1","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86879,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-2.pdf","text":"Figure 3","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86883,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-6.pdf","text":"Figure 9","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86880,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-3.pdf","text":"Figure 6","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86881,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-4.pdf","text":"Figure 7","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86882,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-5.pdf","text":"Figure 8","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86885,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-8.pdf","text":"Figure 11","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86884,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/plate-7.pdf","text":"Figure 10","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86886,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1965/0035/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8d1e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cox, E.R.","contributorId":6094,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cox","given":"E.R.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245366,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Havens, J.S.","contributorId":12043,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Havens","given":"J.S.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245367,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
