The flood resulted from a series of storms in late December, but primarily from the warm torrential rainfall of December 21-23. This rainfall reflected the combined effect of moist unstable airmasses, strong west-southwest winds, and mountain ranges oriented nearly at right angles to the flow of air. The magnitude of the rainfall over much of the mountainous area was equal to or greater than that estimated to have an average return period of 100 years. Precipitation totals in excess of 10 inches in 24 hours and 15 inches in 48 hours were commonplace in the mountains and interior valleys. The peak discharge of streams draining these drenched areas was extremely high and also had a return period estimated to be greater than 100 years. By contrast, some of the areas immediately adjacent to the Pacific Ocean had maximum 24-hour rainfalls of only 2 inches and the small streams draining these low-altitude basins experienced rises that In this distance, the rock debris descended as much as 6,200 feet in altitude. Minor lithologic differences and crosscutting relations indicate that the rockfalls caused at least seven separate avalanches, having an estimated total volume of 14 million cubic yards. The initial rockfall may have been caused by a small steam explosion near the base of Little Tahoma Peak.\r\n\r\nDuring movement, some of the avalanches were deflected from one side of the valley to the other. Calculations based on the height to which the avalanches rose on the valley walls suggest that their velocity reached at least 80 or 90 miles per hour. The oldest rocks exposed in the district are \r\ncrystalline rocks of the Piedmont province. They are unconformably overlain \r\nby nonmarine sedimentary strata of Late Cretaceous age, including gravel, \r\nmicaceous sand, and lenses of kaolin.\r\n\r\nBauxite has been found in a few of the kaolin lenses near the top of the \r\nsequence of these strata. During a long period prior to deposition of the over- \r\nlying marine beds of the Claiborne and Jackson Groups (middle and upper \r\nEocene), the Upper Cretaceous strata were subjected to subaerial erosion. \r\nThe bauxite deposits are considered to have formed during this period. They \r\nrange in thickness from a few inches to more than 10 feet and occupy areas \r\nranging from a few square feet to more than 5 acres. Most of the known \r\nbauxite deposits lie along the valleys of Commissioners Creek and Big Sandy \r\nCreek in Wilkinson County. The kaolin lenses are much larger than the \r\nbauxite deposits; some of the lenses underlie more than 200 acres and are \r\nmore than 20 feet thick.\r\n\r\nBauxite was discovered in the district in 1907 and was mined from 1910 to \r\n1928. A few additional carloads of ore were shipped in 1941 and 1942, but \r\nno ore has been mined since that time. Reserves of high-grade bauxite are \r\nvery small. Reserves of all grades of bauxite plus bauxitic clay may be about \r\n400,000 long tons.\r\n\r\nThe Irwinton district is the principal source of high-grade kaolin in the \r\nUnited States. The presence of kaolin here has been known since early colo- \r\nnial time, and it has been mined continuously since 1897. Production in 1959 \r\nwas 1,940,279 short tons. The reserves of kaolin are very large but have never \r\nbeen adequately measured. Reserves of first and second grade kaolin may be \r\n67 to 84 million short tons. Ground water presents the greatest potential yield, and most of the productive aquifers are in the Biwabik Iron-Formation and the stratified glacial drift. /k single body of ice-contact stratified drift underlies parts of all but one of the five municipality areas mapped. Surface-water supplies are generally inadequate. The Two River system in the eastern part of the area of this report offers some possibilities. Flow data from one discharge station and one miscellaneous gaging site are presented.</p>\n<p>Analyses of water from many sources are presented as are data from many wells and test holes. Ground water commonly has a concentration of high iron and manganese and is hard. Potential yields from both ground-water and surface-water sources are good. The most productive aquifers for ground-water supplies are the Biwabik Iron-Formation and the stratified glacial drift. Areas of stratified drift believed to have good water potential have been outlined. The most abundant surface-water supplies in the area of this report are from the Mississippi River and its tributaries.</p>\n<p>The ground water is generally hard and has a high concentration of iron and manganese. The surface water is generally high in iron and is colored. On the eastern Mesabi Range the potential for additional development of both ground-water and surface-water supplies are good, and on the Vermilion Range the best potential for development is from surface-water resources.</p>\n<p>The most productive aquifers in the area of this report are the Biwabik Iron-Formation and the stratified glacial drift; Bast of Colby Lake the Biwabik Iron-Formation is not an important aquifer, and it is entirely absent on the Vermilion Range. Also, on the Vermilion Range the glacial drift is generally too thin to yield the quantities of water found on the Mesabi Range.</p>\n<p>Surface-water supplies in the area of this report are good. An extensive network of river systems and many lakes form a large untapped potential supply. Records of flow from eight gaging stations are presented as are data from many wells and test holes.</p>\n<p>Ground water commonly has a high concentration of iron and manganese and is hard. Surface water generally has a high concentration of iron and is colored.
