The study of movements is based on capture of 24,275 fin-clipped lake trout taken in experimental gill nets and trawls and commercial gill nets. Yearling lake trout planted from shore dispersed to 15-fath (27-m) depths in 3A? hr. Most fish remained within 2 miles (3.2 km) of the planting site 2 months, but within 4 months some fish had moved as much as 17 miles (27 km). The highest abundance of planted lake trout was in areas 2-4 miles (3.2-6.4 km) from the planting site even 3 years after release. Distance moved and size of fish were not correlated. Dispersal of lake trout begins at planting and probably continues until the fish are mature. Most movement was eastward in southern Lake Superior and followed the counterclockwise surface currents. Movement is most rapid in areas of strong currents and slowest in areas of weak currents or eddies. Movement to areas west of the Keweenaw Peninsula was insignificant from plantings in Keweenaw Bay and nil from other plantings farther east. Lake trout planted in the eastern third of the lake dispersed more randomly than those planted farther west. Few fish moved farther offshore than the 50-fath (91-m) contour. The assemblage indicates a depth comparable to that existing today. Regional relations suggest that the Cretaceous and Eocene deposits deepen to the west toward New Jersey.</p><p id=\"SP0010\">Two mollusk-bearing blocks dredged from the northern side of Georges Bank are correlative with the Miocene Yorktown Formation. Rocks from two other stations are probably Miocene. Because of the need for information not only on the chemical-quality but also on the other water-quality characteristics of the basin, the U.S. Geological Survey, as part of its cooperative program with the Utah State Engineer, evaluated the available data in 1963. Based on this evaluation, a reconnaissance was designed to obtain some of the needed water-quality information. To extend the applicability of the basic information, the Utah State Engineer, the Utah State Department of Health, the Water Commissioner for the Sevier River, and the Soil Conservation Service and Forest Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture assisted in the planning and in the selection of sampling sites.</p><p>This report presents the results of the data-collection phase of the reconnaissance. A companion interpretive report will be prepared later. The data were collected primarily by the U.S. Geological Survey as part of its cooperative programs with the State Engineer of Utah and the Utah Geological and Mineralogical Survey. The work was under the supervision of R. H. This basic adult sex ratio is an average value derived from average production and survival rates. It is an estimate of the average sex ratio about which the fall adult ratios will fluctuate according to annual variations in production and survival. The basic fall adult sex ratio has been calculated as an asymptotic value which is the limit of an infinite series wherein average population characteristics are used as constants. Graphs are provided that allow the determination of basic sex ratios from production and survival data of a population. Large numbers of the big fish spawn in the Ohio marshes adjacent to Lake Erie. Movements related to spawning reach a peak in late March or early April. Later the spawning population disperses and is seldom represented in catches by experimental gear or by anglers. The short period of availability was used to obtain life history information in March of 1951 through 1953. No comprehensive length-weight data for this species have previously been published from this area. East Harbor is a sandspit pond separated from Lake Erie by a large sand bar. Waters and fish populations of the harbor and lake can mix freely through a permanent connecting channel. The larger part of the 850 surface acres of the harbor is normally less than 8 feet deep. The male northern pike averaged 20.5 inches in length and ranged from 13.5 to 28.5 inches. Similar data were collected from samples of an earlier run in the Carp Lake River and of runs in three other tributaries of Lakes Huron and Michigan. The sex ratio of the 1960-61 migrants in the Carp Lake River was 324 males:100 females. Sex ratios of migrants in the other runs varied from 77 to 86 males:100 females. The high proportion of males in the 1960-61 run in the Carp Lake River is attributed to the effective prevention of recruitment of sea lampreys in the river and transformation of the females at an earlier age than is characteristic of the males. A near equal sex ratio among recently transformed migrants is considered normal for the species. The sex composition of a run changed during the period of migration. The proportion of males among the migrants was greatest at the beginning of the run and declined steadily thereafter. The average size was smaller for males than for females. Differences in the mean lengths and weights of the sexes were statistically significant. The length-weight relation differed for the sexes and showed a slower rate of increase of weight with increase in length than is characteristic of other stages of the animals' life cycle. Helisoma snails were infected with the resultant miracidia. Cercariae, very similar, but not identical to Cercaria bessiae, were recovered and used to infect fish. It was possible to infect Lepomis macrochirus, but not Catostomus commersoni, Cottus bairdi, Carassius auratus, Notropis cornutus, N. rubellus, N. spectrunculus, Semotilus atromaculatus, S. corporalis, S. margarita, Ictalurus punctatus, Etheostoma flabellare or Salmo gairdneri.</span></p><p><span>Development of the metacercaria was studied at 13° C, 21° C, and 24° C. There was almost no development at 13° C and development was about twice as rapid at 24° C as at 21° C. The origin of the cyst of parasite origin is discussed. The metacercariae live at least 4 1/2 years in the fish at 12° C. The adult is briefly described and compared with other species. For convenience there are also included records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U. S. Geological Survey, under the direction of Trigg Twichell, district chief, Water Resources Division. </p><p>Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U.S. Geological Survey water supply papers, entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in Texas were contained in Parts 7 and 8 of that series. </p><p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data have been released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these basic-data reports is limited and primarily for local needs. Bumblefoot, a granulomatous swelling of the foot caused by <i>Micrococcus</i> sp., is reported for woodcocks for the first time. Six of 31 woodcocks were infected with a renal coccidium of an undetermined species. <i>Tetrameres</i> sp. was found in 4 of 31 birds examined. <i>Sarcocystis</i> was found in one bird. The reaction vessel was made of<span>&nbsp;</span>copper<span>&nbsp;</span>and was heavily<span>&nbsp;</span>gold<span>&nbsp;</span>plated. The<span>&nbsp;</span>calorimeter<span>&nbsp;</span>has a cooling constant of 0.6 cal‐deg<sup>−1</sup>‐min<sup>−1</sup>, approximately ¼ that of the air‐jacketed<span>&nbsp;</span>calorimeters<span>&nbsp;</span>most commonly used with HF. It reaches equilibrium within 10 min after turning off the<span>&nbsp;</span>heater<span>&nbsp;</span>current. The bacterium was found to be a gram-negative rod which oxidized carbohydrates, produced green fluorescent pigment, and otherwise seemed to fit into the genus&nbsp;</span><i>Pseudomonas</i><span>, except that it was nonmotile and failed to oxidize gluconate. These last two characteristics are typical of pseudomonads. However, the bacterium was classified as a pseudomonad, best fitting the description of the nonmotile variety of&nbsp;</span><i>Pseudomonas fluorescens</i><span>. Goldfish and rainbow trout (</span><i>Salmo gairdneri</i><span>) were infected experimentally by injection, but not by being fed bacteria-laden food. Goldfish were infected by exposure to the bacterium, but only if two or three scales were removed prior to exposure.
