The number of such structures in the study area was increased from 2 to 12 during the investigation.</p>\n<p>Data were collected which permit computation of basin and watershed precipitation, inflow to and outflow from each floodwater-retarding structure, evaporation and seepage from each pool, and a continuous record of discharge from the entire study area. Transpiration was not evaluated, but in the water-budget summary it is included in the item \"pool consumption\", together with evaporation and seepage.</p>\n<p>During the 7-year study period, the annual inflow to the gaged pools ranged from 1.34 to 26.50 inches and averaged 7.39 inches, of which 0.73 inch was direct rainfall on the pool surface. The annual pool consumption ranged only from 1.33 to 1.85 inches, and averaged 1.62 inches. These results indicate that in a year of substantial runoff the floodwater-retarding structures would have only a minor effect on downstream water yield, but in a year of low runoff the structures would have a marked effect on downstream water yield.</p>\n<p>The effect on the flood regimen at a downstream point because of floodwaterretarding structures in the headwaters will vary with the amount and intensity of the precipitation and with antecedent conditions. The beneficial effects of the structures on Honey Creek during the floods of April and May 1957 is illustrative. During the period April 19 to May 31, 1957, the total volume of inflow to the floodwater-retarding structures was equivalent to 4.3 times the combined capacities of the pools from an average basin rainfall of 30.31 inches. In the Dickson area most of the wells and springs are in Warsaw Limestone. In the Lawrenceburg and Waverly areas, ground-water supplies are obtained from Fort Payne Chert and from residuum. In all three areas a few wells obtain small amounts of water from gravel stringers in the residuum. \r\n\r\nYields of well range from a few to 300 gpm (gallons per minute). Wells having the largest yields obtain water from residual material (colluvium) in the valley of Trace Creek in the Waverly area. Fewer than 10 percent of all wells inventoried yield more than 25 gpm. Springs are common in all the areas studied and yield as much as 1,000 gpm. \r\n\r\nThe quality of water from wells and springs iv the areas studied generally is good. The water is of the calcium bicarbonate type, and most of it is moderately hard to hard. The constituents in water from springs and from wells are about the same, although water from springs tends to be softer and slightly lower in dissolved-solids content. \r\n\r\nSprings constitute the largest potential source of water in the three areas. Twenty-one of the large springs discharge approximately 12 million gallons per day, or about 8,000 gpm. Another potential source of water is residuum underlying the valley of Trace Creek in the Waverly area. This seaport lies on an estuary of the Gulf of Kutch in western India and in the eastern part of the State of Kutch. The fieldwork on the investigation was carried on from November 1952 through April 1953 with continuing hydrologic observations through 1954-55. The fieldwork included: geologic mapping and delimitation of the principal aquifers of the region; preparation of water-table maps; a detailed inventory of existing wells and springs; observations of significant water table fluctuations; preparation of isobicarb, isochlor and isosulf maps to show the areal distribution of ground-water salinity. \r\n\r\nThe Bhachau area includes about 116 square miles in eastern Kutch and lies in a belt of semiarid low-latitude steppes. The mean annual rainfall is about 15 inches, most of which falls from late June to late September during the southwest monsoon. The area includes a central sandy upland ranging from about 100 to 250 feet above sea level ; a northern lowland of between about 50 to 125 feet altitude that slopes north to the Great Rann of Kutch; a belt of low buttes and discontinuous ridges ranging from about 200 to 275 feet above sea level; and southern lowland which slopes in a southerly to southeasterly direction from an altitude of about 125 feet to 25 feet or less near the Gulf of Kutch. The principal streams are Kageshwar Vokra and Kara Vokra which drain north to the Great Rann and Kotwala Vokra and Dalwala Vokra which drain south toward the Gulf of Kutch. \r\n\r\nThe rocks of the Bhachau area include nonmarine and marine sediments of Mesozoic, Tertiary, and Quaternary age and volcanic rocks of late Mesozoic to early Tertiary age. The oldest rocks in the area are medium- to coarse-grained white to buff current-bedded friable sandstone with occasional partings of white silty shale of the Upper Bhuj series that has been assigned to the Early Cretaceous. The soft friable sandstone of the Upper Bhuj series constitutes the most productive ground-water reservoir in the Bhachau area. At present (1955) there are nine irrigated tracts for which water is obtained from dug wells less than 90 feet deep in the Upper Bhuj. These wells are worked by bullocks and 'motes' (leather bags) at withdrawal rates ranging from about 6,000 to 24,000imperial gallons per day; however, many existing individual wells if equipped with mechanical pumps are capable of yielding 100,000 gallons per day. The Deccan trap of Late Cretaceous to Eocene age occurs in a sequence of basaltic lava flows in the Bhachau area, but trap dikes, sills and plugs that are common in other parts of Kutch have not been observed in the area. Laterite of probable Eocene age is extensive at the top of the Deccan trap, and in places where the lava flows are thin the parent rock has been almost completely lateritized. The Deccan lava flows or the laterite, where the trap is absent, rest disconformably on the Upper Bhuj. No wells have been observed in the Deccan trap of the Bhachau area, but it is possible that locally small supplies of good water may be obtained from these rocks. \r\n\r\nThe Tertiary sediments, which are assigned to the Manchhar series of Pliocene age, generally rest on the laterite or the Deccan trap ; but where both are absent, the Manchhar rests directly on the Upper Bhuj. The Manchhar series includes massive reddish-brown gypseous clay shales, laminated gray siltstones, some limestone, mottled sandstone, and laterite trap gravel. Only meager supplies of brackish water are obtained from wells in these sediments. \r\n\r\nAlong the channels of Kotwala, Dalwala, Kageshwar, and Kara Vokras are narrow bands of unconsolidated coarse sand with fine gravel of Quaternary age. The Luke area, the subject of this study, extends beyond the limits of the base. \r\n\r\nGround-water resources of the Luke area were studied to determine the possibility of developing a water supply of optimum quantity and quality to supplement the base supply. Several wells drilled for this purpose, prior to the study, either produced an inadequate supply of water or produced ware-that had a high dissolved-solids content. \r\n\r\nThe Phoenix basin is filled with unconsolidated to semiconsolidated Tertiary and Quaternary sedimentary rocks that are referred to as valley fill. Although its total thickness is unknown, 2,784 feet of valley fill--primarily consisting of clay, silt, sand, and gravel--has been penetrated. \r\n\r\nPercentage-distribution maps of fine-grained materials indicate a gross-facies pattern and a selective depositional area of the valley-fill materials. The maps also indicate that the areal distribution of fine-grained materials increases with depth. In general, the better producing wells, regardless of depth, are in areas where tee valley fill is composed of less than 60 percent fine-grained materials. The water table in the area is declining because large quantities of water are withdrawn and recharge is negligible. The decline near Luke Air Force Base during the period 1941-61 was about 150 feet. \r\n\r\nGround water was moving generally southwest in the spring of 1961. Locally, changes in the direction of movement indicate diversion toward two major depressions. \r\n\r\nThe dissolved-solids content of the ground water ranged from about 190 to 6,300 ppm. The highest concentration of dissolved solids is in water from the southern part of the area and seems to come from relatively shallow depths; wells in the northern part generally yield water of good quality. \r\n\r\nAfter a reconnaissance of the area, the U.S. Geological Survey located and supervised the drilling of two test wells--wells (B-2-1) 9bcb and (B-2-1) 5abc?on Luke Air Force Base. The quantity of water produced by the wells was adequate. The dissolved-solids content of water from the wells was low, and the overall quality of water from well (B-2-1) 5abc was good.
