The surface and ground water resources of a 991 square mile area comprising the drainage basins of English River, Old Mans Creek and Clear Creek are presented. These basins lie to the west and southwest of Iowa City, Iowa, and all three streams are tributary to the Iowa River. The area is comprised of rolling uplands with relatively broad valleys and is devoted mainly to agriculture and livestock farming.

\n

In general, the surface water use is adversely affected by the high variability of flows and particularly by the critically small minimum flows. Augmentation of the minimum flows by means of storage reservoirs is possible but may be uneconomical in the broad valleys which require a high area to volume ratio.

\n

The surface water supply is presented in the form of tables and graphs which show information on maximum and minimum flows, mean flow, duration of flow, frequency of low flow and flood flow and storage requirements. Low-flow discharge. profiles for the English River and South Fork English River derived from measurements at partial record and supplementary sites are also shown.

\n

Ground water is available from shallow wells in nearly all of the area; however, the wells vary widely in productivity and reliability during a drouth. Potentially excellent aquifers may be found in the alluvium which underlies the valleys since similar areas along the lower Iowa River basin have produced yield up to 100 gallons per minute. However, the best and most reliable source of good ground water is the Jordan Sandstone. This aquifer varies from 1,375 feet below ground level in the eastern part of the area to 2,200 feet below ground level at the western end of the area. It is capable of supplying as much as 1,000 gallons per minute to individual wells. Its location is shown in the report by means of map contours referenced to mean sea level.

A sodium-potassium water is related to tuff (in part zeolitized) and to alluvium containing detrital tuff. A calcium-magnesium water is related to limestone and dolomite, or to alluvium containing detritus of these rock types. A mixed chemical type, containing about as much sodium and potassium as calcium and magnesium, may result from the addition of one of the first two types of water to the other; to passage of water first through tuff and then through carbonate rock, or vice versa; and to ion-exchange during water travel. Consideration of the distribution of these water types, together with the distribution of sodium in the water and progressive changes in the dissolved solids, suggests that the ground water in the Nevada Test Site probably moves toward the Amargosa Desert, not into Indian Spring Valley and thence southeastward toward Las Vegas. It has an area of 545 square miles, and in 1960 it had a population of 13,903. The county is in the physiographic region referred to as the Dissected Loess-covered Till Prairies. Major drainage consists of the Big Nemaha River, including its North and South Forks, and Muddy Creek. These streams flow southeastward and empty into the Missouri River, which forms the eastern boundary of the county. The climate of Richardson County is subhumid; the normal annual precipitation is about 35 inches. Agriculture is the chief industry, and corn is the principal crop. \r\n\r\nPleistocene glacial drift, loess, and alluvial deposits mantle the bedrock except in the southern and southwestern parts of the county where the bedrock is at the surface. Ground water is obtained from glacial till, fluvioglacial material, terrace deposits, and coarse alluvial deposits, all of Pleistocene age--and some is obtained from bedrock aquifers of Pennsylvanian and Permian age. \r\n\r\nAdequate supplies of ground water are in many places difficult to locate because the water-bearing sands and gravels of Pleistocene age vary in composition and lack lateral persistence. Perched water tables are common in the upland areas and provide limited amounts of water to many of the shallow wells, Very few wells in bedrock yield adequate supplies, as the permeability of the rock is low and water that is more than a few tens of feet below the bedrock surface is highly mineralized. \r\n\r\nRecharge is primarily from local precipitation, and water levels in many wells respond rapidly to increased or decreased precipitation. The quality of the ground water is generally satisfactory for most uses, although all the water is hard, and iron and manganese concentrations, in some areas, are relatively high. The collection of data on the flow of rivers in Wisconsin started on a continuing basis in 1913. A few streamflow records were started in the late 1800's, one as early as 1888 (Chippewa River at Chippewa Falls). Much of the work has been done under cooperative arrangements between the U.S. Geological Survey and various State and Federal agencies. These data have been published in the form of daily discharge tables, and monthly and yearly summaries.

A water well was drilled recently at the new headquarters site of Mount Rainier National Park, Washington. The headquarters site is in the narrow bedrock-walled, alluvium-floored valley of the Nisqually River. The well was drilled to a depth of 96 feet in a terraced outwash deposit which underlies the site. Two confined aquifers were penetrated but only the lower aquifer was screened and developed.

The well was test pumped at various rates, the highest being 235 gallons per minute. During the first of two pumping tests, the specific capacity decreased abruptly. The decrease may have resulted from increased resistance to water movement caused by shifting of the sand and gravel adjacent to the well screen. The specific capacity of the well probably can be increased by additional development; however, because the well is capable of meeting the production requirements of the National Park Service additional development is not essential.

Ground-water levels in the valley alluvium fluctuate at least 16 feet in response to seasonal variations in recharge.

A sample of water taken from the well after 24 hours of pumping was of excellent chemical quality and is classified as soft.

Future ground-water development probably will be most successful in the central and southeastern parts of the headquarters site where the valley alluvium is thickest.
