The effects of drought are most pronounced on soil moisture, because soil is the prime recipient of the water from precipitation, and upon streamflow, because it is the residual water that is not accepted by or that flows out from the soil and groundwater reservoirs. Studies by statistical correlation of records of natural streamflow and of dendrochronology indicate patterns of regional runoff that reflect precipitation trends in the principal meteorologic regions in the Southwest. By contrast, the effects of drought upon ground water vary with the natural characteristics and degree of utilization of individual aquifers.

Although this anomaly has been known for some time, its apparent significance has recently increased. Reappraisal of the anomalous pattern in the light of a large quantity of geochemical data obtained by a regional geochemical mapping program during the past two years has shown that this lead anomaly is by far the strongest one yet found by the Geological Survey in Maine. Galena-and pyrite-bearing quartz veins are present in the drainage basin of this stream, but the exposed veins are not believed to contain enough lead to be the principal cause of the geochemical anomaly. Accordingly, the drainage basin of this stream is believed to be above average in mineral potential.
The anomalous stream, here named Pyrite Creek for convenience, is the northeastern branch of a major tributary to Bean Brook.
Figure 1 presents the data of the detailed geochemical survey along Pyrite Creek, reconnaissance geochemical data in the surrounding area, and the approximate distribution of the major rock types.

In the Blue Ridge Mountains area of northern Georgia the great relief, moderately heavy precipitation, fast runoff, and loamy soils cause sediment concentrations and sediment loads which are above average for the State. During periods of moderate to low streamflow, the concentration of suspended sediment ranges from 1 to 25 ppm (parts per million). After heavy rainfall, sediment concentration increases rapidly as water discharge rises, and occasionally exceeds 1,000 ppm before decreasing again. The concentration may reach a maximum and decrease before the discharge peak is reached. A major part of the annual sediment load can be carried during a short period of time because of the great increase in both water discharge and sediment concentration during floods. The lower Coastal Plain differs from the mountainous areas in several respects. The topography is gently rolling to almost level, precipitation and runoff are less than average for the State, and topsoils generally consist of hard and loamy sand. Concentration of suspended sediment in streamflow commonly ranges from 1 to 20 ppm during periods of low to moderate discharge and increases to 15 to 60 ppm at high discharge. Because of the small increase in concentration with increasing stream discharge, the sediment load varies approximately in proportion to the discharge. \r\n\r\nThe sediment characteristics of streams in the Piedmont, the Valley and Ridge area. and the upper Coastal Plain are intermediate .between those of the Blue Ridge area and the lower Coastal Plain. \r\n\r\nComparison of suspended load with estimated bed load in a few Georgia streams suggests th.at bed load is less than 20 percent of the suspended load for most streams. \r\n\r\nFactors which appear to be most important in causing variation in sediment yield in Georgia are topographic relief, soil texture, and location of dams. Variations in other factors such as precipitation, runoff, covering vegetation, drainage area, and channel types serve to modify the effects of the major factors. \r\n\r\nIn general, Georgia stream water is of good quality. Water of some streams is of exceptionally fine quality and contains less than 30 ppm combined dissolved and suspended solids during at least 90 percent of the time. Knowledge of the nature and cause of variation in water quality will permit the most effective use of Georgia streams.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. radionuclides, Cape Thompson, Alaska","docAbstract":"The concept and the derivation of a distribution coefficient are developed. Ion exchange and the nature of competition among cations are given. Distribution coefficients for carrier-free cesium, strontium, and iodine were determined on 17 samples collected during July, 1961, in the vicinity of Cape Thompson, northwestern Alaska. High percentage uptake of these ions was measured under the test conditions. Cesium adsorption, at 1 day, was found to be represented by the mass-action equation. The distribution coefficients for cesium adsorption were so large that, in all but a few cases, very little of this nuclide would remain long in solution in the natural waters of the area. Strontium adsorption was found to be a function of the calcium-plus-magnesium concentration and to be independent of the sodium concentration. In most samples, its equilibrium is reached in less than 1 day. Iodine sorption varied with percent organic matter in the samples. If the iodine were in contact with organic matter for several days, a substantial part of it probably would be removed from solution in the natural waters.

One composite frequency curve is applied to the entire study region. This curve relates floods of various magnitudes at any site within the region to probable recurrence intervals (from 1.1 to 50 years) for those floods. Flood magnitudes are reduced to dimensionless form by expressing them as a ratio to mean annual flood. Magnitudes of mean annual floods vary with the flood-producing characteristics of stream basins. On the basis of the limited data available, drainage-area size is found to be the only significant factor affecting the magnitude of the mean annual flood. Trial and error groupings of gaging-station records show that the region can be split into three hydrologic areas: one curve defines the relation within each area between mean annual flood and drainage area. Where these deposits contain confined water, they may be susceptible to compaction and related land- surface subsidence, if artesian pressures are reduced. \r\n\r\nCompaction of artesian-aquifer systems can be estimated from core tests if the artesian-pressure decline is known.
