The Rock River at Watertown, Wisc., was the highest in 40 years and Lake Mendota at Madison, Wisc., reached its maximum stage since 1916. Many towns were flooded and thousands of persons were forced from their homes.

What is possibly the greatest 24-hour rainfall ever to be noted in Iowa fell August 5-6. The resulting floods inundated an 80-block area in Fort Madison, Iowa, and caused damage estimated at $600,000 in the city. A total of 130,000 acres of land was inundated.

Major floods occurred in Texas in the upper Trinity, middle Brazos, middle Colorado, upper Guadalupe, and upper Nueces River basins in early October, following heavy general rains that covered most of Texas. The peak stage on North Bosque River near Clifton was the highest known since 1887. More than \\$1 million in damage was reported for Houston.

In addition to the 4 floods mentioned above, 22 others of lesser magnitude are considered important enough to report in this annual summary.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp1750B","usgsCitation":"Hendricks, E.L., 1964, Summary of floods in the United States during 1959: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1750, vi, 101 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1750B.","productDescription":"vi, 101 p.","numberOfPages":"101","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":27072,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1750b/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":138488,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1750b/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db69927b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hendricks, E. The chemical quality of the water was studied to obtain information on the nature and amounts of dissolved solids in the streams and on the suitability of the water for domestic, industrial, and irrigation uses. Sedimentation was studied to determine the quantity of sediment that is transported by the streams, the particle sizes of the sediment, and the probable specific weight of the sediment when deposited in a reservoir.
\n
The basin is underlain by consolidated sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous and Tertiary age; along the Grand River and its tributaries thefe rocks are mantled by alluvium of Quaternary age. The Hell Creek and Fort Union Formations underlie about 4,700 of the 5,680 square miles of drainage area. The climate of the basin is semiarid and is characterized by tot summers and cold winters. Mean annual runoff is about 53 acre-feet per square mile of drainage area and is equal to about 7 percent of the mean annual precipitation. The highest streamflows on the Grand River and major- tributaries are caused by melting of snow in March and April. Streamflow is extremely variable from year to year.
\n
Most of the surface waters in the basin are of the sodium sulfate or sodium bicarbonate type. High percent sodium is typical of almost all the surface water's. The streamflow-quality patterns of the Grand River and its two forks are very similar; dissolved-solids concentration, which usually c'oes not exceed 3,000 ppm, is maximum during low-flow periods.
\n
The water in Shadehill Reservoir became stratified during the flood inflow of 1952; about 75 percent of the flood water, which was of good qutlity, passed through the reservoir. The quality of the water became almost uniform throughout the reservoir the latter part of July 1952. After the specific conductance became relatively stable in 1956, it fluctuated from abrut 1,300 to 1,600 micromhos per centimeter and was between 1,400 and 1,500 rnicromhos per centimeter most of the time.
\n
During the representative period July 1937 to June 1950 the quantity of dissolved solids passing the station near Wakpala was estimated to have been about 140,000 tons per year. Yields computed for different parts of the basin ranged from about 22 to 32 tons per square mile.
\n
Except for sulfate, concentrations of chemical constituents usually do not exceed the maximum concentrations recommended for domestic supplies. The rather high dissolved solids and hardness of most of the surface waters prevent the use of these waters for most industrial purposes unless the quality is improved by treatment.
\n
Classified for irrigation use according to its specific conductance and sodiumadsorption-ratio, the water stored in Shadehill Reservoir has a high salinity hazard and a medium sodium hazard. The water can be used safely forsustained irrigation on soils of the proposed irrigation unit if adequate teaching is practiced and if gypsum or some other calcium compound is added to the water or land during the high sodium cycle.
\n

","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Print Office","doi":"10.3133/wsp1769","usgsCitation":"Hembree, C.H., Krieger, R.A., and Jordan, P.R., 1964, Chemical quality of surface waters, and sedimentation in the Grand River drainage basin, North and South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1769, Report: viii, 78 p.; 4 Plates: 18.50 x 24.00 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1769.","productDescription":"Report: viii, 78 p.; 4 Plates: 18.50 x 24.00 inches or smaller","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":27028,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1769/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":27030,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1769/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":27031,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1769/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137094,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1769/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":27029,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1769/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":27027,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1769/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"North Dakota, South Dakota","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -104.04052734375,\n              45.537136680398596\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.04052734375,\n              46.240651955001695\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.37109375,\n              46.240651955001695\n            ],\n            [\n              -100.37109375,\n              45.537136680398596\n            ],\n            [\n              -104.04052734375,\n              45.537136680398596\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49dfe4b07f02db5e3286","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hembree, Charles Herbert","contributorId":63784,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hembree","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"Herbert","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144223,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Krieger, Robert A.","contributorId":99954,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Krieger","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144224,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Jordan, Paul Robert","contributorId":57819,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Jordan","given":"Paul","email":"","middleInitial":"Robert","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":144222,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Extensive flooding occurred along the Gulf Coastal plain on the lower reaches of the major streams from the Brazos River to the Nueces River. Two lives were lost, and property damage exceeded \\$1 million.

Damaging floods of April 1-7 followed one of the wettest winters in California history. Swollen streams overflowed their banks throughout the central part of the State, and discharge peaks on many streams exceeded those .of the floods of December 1955. Most severely flooded was the San Francisco Bay area. Total flood damage was estimated at \\$23 million.

The storms and floods of April-May in Louisiana and adjacent States outranked all other floods in the United States during 1958 with respect to intensity of rain over a large area, number of streams having maximum discharge of record, rare occurrence of peaks, and great amount (\\$21 million) of resultant damage.

Heavy rains on June 8-15 caused one of the greatest summer floods of record in central Indiana. Peak discharges were high and of rare occurrences. Failure of numerous levees along the Wabash River caused great damage. Crop damage alone was estimated at \\$48 million.

Intense rains of July 1-2 caused record-breaking floods in southwestern Iowa. Rapid rises and the great magnitude of the floods on small streams resulted in 18 deaths and many injuries. Six towns and cities along the East Nishnabotna River and its tributaries were particularly hard hit; rural damage was also high. Total damage was estimated at \\$15 million.

Heavy rains (as much as 40 inches during the last 2 weeks in September) from the middle of September to the middle of October caused destructive floods along the Rio Grande in Texas and Mexico. Many communities were isolated by the flood waters, and damage to crops was great.

In addition to the 7 floods mentioned above, 21 others of lesser magnitude are reported in this annual summary.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp1660B","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Federal, State, and local agencies","usgsCitation":"Hendricks, E.L., 1964, Summary of floods in the United States during 1958: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1660, vi, 97 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1660B.","productDescription":"vi, 97 p.","numberOfPages":"104","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":136589,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1660b/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":24852,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1660b/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b04e4b07f02db6992a6","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Hendricks, E. Mex., near the Zuni Mountains, a huge sandstone bluff rises abruptly 200 feet above the plain. The Spaniards called it 'El Morro,' which means 'the headland' or 'bluff.' Around it are other mesas and canyons and stands of pinon and ponderosa pine. Other great rocks are nearby, but none are as popular as El Morro, and none have been as important to the traveler.\r\n\r\nFor at El Morro there is water.\r\n\r\nIn that country, water is scarce and precious. In the old days, travelers from Santa Fe would tell each other about the pool of clear, refreshing water at the base of the huge rock. This is the story of the great bluff, its water supply, and the rocks around it.\r\n\r\nIn the late summer of 1849, an American lieutenant of the Topographical Engineers, James H. Simpson, accompanied infantry and artillery troops on a reconnaissance march from Santa Fe into the Navajo Country. On September 18, at the urging of one Mr. Lewis, an Indian trader, Lieutenant Simpson left the main party in order to see 'half an acre of inscriptions' upon a huge rock (fig. 1) . Although somewhat dubious, the Lieutenant had allowed himself to be persuaded by Lewis that the trip was worthwhile. Taking with him an artist named R. H. Kern, another man by the name of Bird, and Mr. Lewis as guide, he set off through miles of desert country, filled with huge red and white sandstone rocks, 'some of them looking like steamboats, and others presenting very much the appearance of facades of heavy Egyptian architecture'.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1766","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the National Park Service","usgsCitation":"West, S.W., and Baldwin, H.L., 1964, The Water Supply of El Morro National Monument: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1766, v, 32 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1766.","productDescription":"v, 32 p.","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":139424,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1766/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":12460,"rank":100,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.nps.gov/history/history/online_books/elmo/index.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":29919,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1766/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ab0e4b07f02db66d55d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"West, Samuel Wilson","contributorId":24763,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"West","given":"Samuel","email":"","middleInitial":"Wilson","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":146222,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Baldwin, Helene Louise","contributorId":33703,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baldwin","given":"Helene","email":"","middleInitial":"Louise","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":146223,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

In the Dickson area most of the wells and springs are in Warsaw Limestone. In the Lawrenceburg and Waverly areas, ground-water supplies are obtained from Fort Payne Chert and from residuum. In all three areas a few wells obtain small amounts of water from gravel stringers in the residuum. \r\n\r\nYields of well range from a few to 300 gpm (gallons per minute). Wells having the largest yields obtain water from residual material (colluvium) in the valley of Trace Creek in the Waverly area. Fewer than 10 percent of all wells inventoried yield more than 25 gpm. Springs are common in all the areas studied and yield as much as 1,000 gpm. \r\n\r\nThe quality of water from wells and springs iv the areas studied generally is good. The water is of the calcium bicarbonate type, and most of it is moderately hard to hard. The constituents in water from springs and from wells are about the same, although water from springs tends to be softer and slightly lower in dissolved-solids content. \r\n\r\nSprings constitute the largest potential source of water in the three areas. Twenty-one of the large springs discharge approximately 12 million gallons per day, or about 8,000 gpm. Another potential source of water is residuum underlying the valley of Trace Creek in the Waverly area. Wells yielding as much as 500 gpm probably could be developed in this aquifer.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1764","usgsCitation":"Marcher, M.V., Bingham, R.H., and Lounsbury, R., 1964, Ground-water geology of the Dickson, Lawrenceburg, and Waverly areas in the western Highland Rim, Tennessee: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1764, Report: iv, 50 p.;
