It is predominantly a rural area with a population of about 9,500 people who are engaged chiefly in agriculture. By and large, the residents are dependent upon ground water as a source of potable water. This investigation was made to provide knowledge of the availability and quality of .the ground-water supply to aid future development. \r\n\r\nThe climate, surface features, and geology of the area are favorable for the occurrence of ground water. Temperatures are generally mild and precipitation is normally abundant and fairly evenly distributed throughout the year. The topography of the area is relatively fiat and, hence, the streams have low gradients. The surface is underlain to a considerable depth by highly permeable unconsolidated sediments that range in age from Early Cretaceous to Recent. Nearly all the subsurface stratigraphic units yield some water to wells, but only four parts or combinations of these units are sufficiently permeable, to yield large supplies. These are, from oldest to youngest, the nonmarine Cretaceous sediments and the Magothy Formation, the Monmouth Group, the Rancocas Formation, and .the surficial terrace and valley-fill deposits. In the northern part of the area the nonmarine Cretaceous sediments and the Magothy Formation can be reached economically by wells. Yields in excess of 300 gpm (gallons per minute) have been obtained from wells screened in this aquifer, but the maximum productivity of the aquifer has not been .tested. The Monmouth Group is used as a source of water in the central part of the area, where some wells yield as much as 125 gpm. The Rancocas Formation is the principal aquifer in the southern part of the area. Yields of 200-400 gpm can be expected from this aquifer, owing to its uniformly coarse texture, particularly in the upper part of the formation. The terrace deposits compose the shallow watertable aquifer throughout the area. In places the water-table aquifer is connected hydraulically to each of .the other three aquifers. The yields of wells tapping this aquifer are generally small, because the saturated thickness of the aquifer is small. The aquifer does provide a convenient and economical source of water for domestic supplies, .and the quality o# the available water supply is generally satisfactory for most purposes. \r\n\r\nThe use of water in the area was estimated to be about 1.77 million gallons per day in 1959. Rural uses amounted to about 75 percent of the total, and municipal and industrial uses accounted for .the remainder. Water for irrigation of crops constituted about half of the water pumped for rural use. The total use of ground water in the area is a mere fraction of the supply available. Each of the four major aquifers is capable of vastly increased production. Future development, however, will be .limited by the changes in the quality of the water resulting from the future pumping regime-and the expanded pattern of development. As part of the study, the Geological Survey made monthly water-level measurements in 247 wells; 17 of which were equipped with automatic water-level recorders. These measurements and measurements made by the Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District are included in this report— In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation measured the water levels in wells along the Santa Ynez River between Cachuma Dam and Rucker Crossing, but the measurements have not been included herein.</p><p>In addition to the observation-well program, the Geological Survey is preparing interpretive reports on the ground-water conditions in the Ellwood-Gaviota area, the Lompoc and Santa Ynez upland areas of the Santa Ynez River basin, the Santa Barbara-Summerland area, and the Santa Maria Valley. The basic data from which these reports are being prepared can be consulted at the Santa Barbara office of the Geological Survey.</p><p>This report was prepared by the Geological Survey, Water Resources Division, under the general supervision of Fred Kunkel, district geologist in charge of ground-water investigations In California, and under the immediate supervision of C. P. Zones, geologist in charge of the Santa Barbara subdistrict office.</p><p>Measurements for the period 1941-55 were published in U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers; measurements for the period 1956-62 were released locally in duplicated form.' A report by G. A. LaRocque, Jr., and others (1950) contains descriptions of 2,246 wells in the ground-water basins of the county in 1942. It also contains many water-level measurements made before 1942 by the city of Santa Barbara, the Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District, the San Joaquin Power Division of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., the Union Sugar Co., the Union Oil Co., and other organizations and individuals.</p><p>Comprehensive reports on the geology and ground-water resources of the Santa Ynez River basin (Upson, Thomasson, and others, 1951; Wilson, 1959), the south-coast basins (Upson and others, 1951), the Santa Maria Valley area (Worts, 1951), the Cuyama Valley (Upson and Worts, 1951) and the San Antonio Creek valley (Muir; 1964) were published as Geological Survey water-supply papers. A report on stream runoff and ground-water storage capacity of the Santa Ynez River valley (Troxell and Wilson, 1952) was released to the open file in October 1952. Rocks of pre-Cretaceous age are deeply buried beneath this area. Sedimentary rocks of Cretaceous age and sedimentary and volcanic rocks of Tertiary age, which have an aggregate thickness of about 30,000 feet, are exposed in the northern and eastern parts of the area. Along most of the east side of Jackson Lake, unconsolidated glacial and interglacial deposits of Quaternary age overlie the rocks of Cretaceous and Tertiary age. The unconsolidated deposits were penetrated by test drilling to a depth of 206 feet, but the maximum thickness is probably much greater. Test wells were drilled in five localities to evaluate the deposits of Quaternary age as possible sources of ground water for National Park Service facilities. In the Pilgrim Creek valley, test wells were capable of yielding 200 gpm (gallons per minute); properly constructed production wells could obtain much greater yields. Test wells at Lizard Point and Jackson Lake Campgrounds yielded more than 100 gpm, and a test well near the confluence of the Buffalo Fork and Snake rivers yielded 30 gpm. A test hole drilled in the NW1/4 sec. 36, T. 46 N., R. 115 W., was dry at 200 feet. Unconsolidated deposits of Quaternary age are the most promising source of additional ground water. Because of the extreme range in grain size and sorting, these deposits vary greatly in permeability. Their saturated thickness ranges from 0 to more than 130 feet and changes seasonally; variations of as much as 36 feet were measured (1961-62) in the Pilgrim Creek valley. In most localities where deposits of Quaternary age are ,present, small to moderate ground-water supplies can be developed; larger ground-water supplies can be developed in parts of the Pilgrim Creek valley. One well taps the Bivouac Formation of Late Pliocene or Pleistocene age, but no other wells are known to tap rocks of possible pre-Quaternary age. The Harebell Formation and Bacon Ridge Sandstone of Late Cretaceous age and the Bivouac Formation offer the best possibilities for development of additional water supplies from the consolidated rocks. Chemical analyses of water samples from 11 wells in the deposits of Quaternary age and 1 well in the Bivouac Formation indicate that the water is of generally good quality for drinking and most other purposes.
