During the 15 years between 1941 and 1956, the movement of 34 of these dunes ranged between 350 and 1200 feet, an average of 50 feet per year. This difference in average movement during the two intervals is attributed primarily to increased sand supply. Movement (D) plotted against height of slip face (H) for the Salton dunes fits reasonably well with Finkel's reciprocal curve (1/D = n + k H) or with a law of the type D = PerH. Factors other than height affect the rate of movement, one of the more important being the state of the dune, whether growing or steady state. This distinct correlation between the form of the volcanic structures, elevation above the sea floor, and composition suggests that the islands of alkali basalt are derived from a parent tholeiitic magma by differentiation in shallow reservoirs. The oldest exposed rocks of the mineralized area are limestones of Middle Ordovician age. The paragenesis throughout the district is constant and traceable, although the relative abundance of minerals varies from vein to vein. The mineral association, areal distribution of the ore minerals, and comparison with other epithermal deposits indicate that the Central Kentucky veins are epithermal. The ore deposits have a district-wide lateral zoning in a concentric pattern. Near the middle of the district, and within the Lexington dome, are two centers of fluorite-calcite-dark sphalerite veins that form Zone 1. Surrounding these centers is a much larger Zone 2 in which nearly all the veins contain fluorite, barite, calcite, and two-colored (yellow-black) sphalerite. Galena is absent or present in very minute quantities in Zones 1 and 2. In Zone 3, which surrounds Zone 2, barite, galena, and bright-colored sphalerite are the principal minerals. Fluorite is absent, or present only in traces. Textures of the mineral veins change from bands of coarse comb crystals in Zone 1 to mostly colloform bands in the outer zones. Structural control of the ore is related to faults and fractures transecting the collapsed Lexington dome and is an important factor in the distribution of mineral veins. The district has many of the mineralogic, zonal, and structural features of the Central Tennessee, Kentucky-Illinois, and Pennine, England, mineral districts, which suggest that the origins of these districts were similar. The ores in the Central Kentucky district were probably deposited from ascending thermal solutions of slightly lower temperatures than those that formed the deposits in the Kentucky-Illinois district. The solutions are believed to have been derived from a deepseated magmatic source centered beneath the Lexington dome, but they may have been greatly diluted by ground waters within the dome. Diethylstilbestrol was selected for initial trials because of its demonstrated antifertility effect on rabbits, mink (Mustela vison), dogs, and cattle. In penned tests with stilbestrol, pregnancy was terminated in six coyotes (Canis latrans) fed a single 100-mg oral dose dissolved in tallow. A subsequent field trial was conducted in New Mexico on 20 townships, March 5-15, 1963. Five thousand (100 mg stilbestrol in ½ ounce of tallow) drop baits were placed wherever coyote sign was found. After a delay of 3 weeks to allow the drug to take effect, a collection of female tracts from the treated area and a reference area 25 miles away was made to measure and compare reproductive success. Of the 20 females in reproductive condition recovered from the treated area, only 4 had viable embryos, while reproduction was blocked in 16 specimens by failure of implantation or resorption of embryos. All of the 13 females in reproductive condition from the reference area would have produced pups as evidenced by viable embryos. Although the fauna of the middle Eocene rocks in western Florida is composed mainly of species that have been reported from rocks of equivalent age in the western Gulf Coast, its distinctive species, and poor representation of a few species that are diagnostic in the western area. The assemblages of small Foraminifera in the lower Eocene rocks are composed, mainly, of specimens of species that have been described from outcrops of the Wilcox Group in Alabama. The microfauna of the clastic facies of the Paleocene in western Florida is informally called the \"Tamesi' Fauna\" in this report. This Fauna is particularly important because it contains abundant Glorotalia velasconesis, a diagnostic species of the Velasco (Paleocene) Formation of Mexico, is also diagnostic of the \"Tamesi fauna.\" On the basis of the environmental preference of Recent analogous pelagic forms, the preferential environment of the containing sediments, it is inferred that the \"Tamesi fauna\" developed in a subtropical, open sea environment.

The Effect of the temperature, salinity, bathymetry, and associated factors on the distribution of Recent pelagic species of Foraminifera has been discussed by several authors. Similar controls were probably effective during Paleocene time. The presence of certain species of pelagic Foraminifera in one Paleocene unit, and their absences in another, is therefore not necessarily an index to the relative position of the units in the vertical time sequence. The stratigraphic distribution of the benthonic species of the \"Tamesi Fauna\" in western Florida is usually accord with their stratigraphic distribution in the Paleocene beds in other parts of the Gulf coast. Consequently, on the basis of the foregoing enviromental and distributive data, it is suggested that the \"Tamesi Fauna\" of the clasttic lithofacies of the Paleocene in western Florida respresents an interval of geologic time that is equivalent to the represented by the Clayton, Porters Creek, and Naheola formations of Alqabama and Correlative stratigraphic units in other parts of the Gulf region. It is believed that the outer neritic Paleocene sediments of west Florida grade northward into the inner-neritic Paleocene sediments that crop out in Alabama. Fifty seven species of Foraminifera that are characteristic of the cored Paleocene section in the Walton well, and recorded from 37 other wells distributed across northwestern Florida and southern Georgia, are discussed and figured. Two species are describes as new: Epoides libertyensis and Cibicides libertyensis.
","language":"English","publisher":"Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research","issn":"0011-409X","usgsCitation":"Applin, E., 1964, Some Middle Eocene, Lower Eocene, and Paleocene foraminiferal faunas from west Florida: Contributions from the Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research, v. 15, no. 2, p. 45-72.","productDescription":"28 p.","startPage":"45","endPage":"72","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":367312,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.er.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Florida","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -87.4951171875,\n              24.206889622398023\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.771484375,\n              24.206889622398023\n            ],\n            [\n              -80.771484375,\n              31.16580958786196\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.4951171875,\n              31.16580958786196\n            ],\n            [\n              -87.4951171875,\n              24.206889622398023\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"15","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Applin, Esther English Richards","contributorId":10794,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Applin","given":"Esther English Richards","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":770498,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Morphologic variation in the genus has been recognized by earlier workers, but few have tried to show exact relationships among the various forms. The present writers have attempted to trace the development of the genus through geologic time. Only North American species and varieties of Composita are treated in this paper. Forty-two species and varieties are included in a phylogenetic history of the genus. Nine other species are listed as doubtful forms. Eighteen specific and varietal names are rejected by the writers as obsolete. Morphologic intergradation among associated, synchronous forms is studied with the aid of frequency polygons. Lack of clear separation of the associated species within different maxima of the polygons indicates their dominant intergradation. These forms, previously described qualitatively, are regarded as typological species. A statistical method is used to test for differences between collections containing the same typological species. Significant differences in the slopes of reduced major axes are obtained in length-width, length-depth and depth-width plots of two collections containing Composita subtilita and Composita argentea. Significant differences also are obtained when two collections of Composita subtilita, Composita ovata and Composita elongata are compared in the same way. In spite of these results, slight nomenclatural changes are thought to be unnecessary. Use of the triangular graph as a means of distinguishing vertical subspecies is also tested. Four collections are plotted on one graph and five artificially separated groups of Composita subtilita on another. Mixed results are obtained. The method is suspect because the results are found to depend largely on the number of specimens used.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society for Sedimentary Geology","usgsCitation":"Grinnell, R.S., and Andrews, G., 1964, Morphologic studies of the brachiopod genus Composita: Journal of Paleontology, v. 38, no. 2, p. 227-248.","productDescription":"22 p.","startPage":"227","endPage":"248","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":372845,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"38","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Grinnell, Robert S.","contributorId":222946,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Grinnell","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":783618,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Andrews, George W.","contributorId":40621,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Andrews","given":"George W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":783619,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Opossums begin to breed in Maryland in early February and young are found in the pouch until August. Evidently the first breeding period accounts for most of the young produced. The sex ratio of those trapped was slightly higher for males than females, but did not differ significantly from an expected sample from an even sex ratio. The trapping results indicated a production rate of from 4 to 5.4 young per adult female, but this is based on the assumption that young and adults have the same trap response. Opossums appear to favor low, damp woods rather than upland woods or open areas.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.2307/1377299","usgsCitation":"Llewellyn, L.M., Exceptions to the normal limit are mainly in small, widely scattered areas. One anomalous area, however, covers several tens of square miles and contains most of the important uranium deposits. Both mechanical and chemical dispersion of radioelements takes place in the immediate vicinity of the ore deposits, though no attempt is made to extend this local dispersion model to the large, regional gamma radiation anomaly. It is suggested that the point-source concept for sedimentary uranium deposits is unrealistic and that conventional aeroradiometric survey grid spacing can be substantially enlarged without seriously reducing efficiency in uranium exploration.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.59.2.309","usgsCitation":"Moxham, R., 1964, Radioelement dispersion in a sedimentary environment and its effect on uranium exploration: Economic Geology, v. 59, no. 2, p. 309-321, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.59.2.309.","productDescription":"13 p.","startPage":"309","endPage":"321","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386146,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United  States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"southeast Texas","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -93.84521484375,\n              29.76437737516313\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.75732421875,\n              30.95876857077987\n            ],\n            [\n              -96.48193359375,\n              30.35391637229704\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.525390625,\n              29.036960648558267\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.94287109375,\n              26.43122806450644\n            ],\n            [\n              -97.119140625,\n              25.918526162075153\n            ],\n            [\n              -93.84521484375,\n              29.76437737516313\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"59","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1964-03-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moxham, R.M.","contributorId":42234,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moxham","given":"R.M.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":816820,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
