Records of age indicated unusual strength for only one year class--1943 which strongly dominated the 1948 sample from Lake Michigan and the 1949 sample from Green Bay and was well represented in the 1948 collection from green Bay. Collection of 1951-52 without exception were dominated by age group III. Length distributions of samples varied widely according to the age composition. Among fish more than 2 years old, the length distributions of age groups overlapped broadly. Several 1-inch intervals included fish of four age groups. The length-weight relation varied considerably among central Green Bay samples, but differences among localitites were nearly equalled by the year-to-year difference at a single locality. Lake Michigan whitefish were generally lighter than those from Green Bay. Weight increased to the 3.386 power of length in Green Bay (combined samples) and the 3.359 power in Lake Michigan. Growth in length, calculated by direct proportion from diameter measurements of growth fields on scales, differed among localities in central Green Bay and between samples of different years at a single locality. If permanent locality differences exist they are not large and can be obscured by the evident annual fluctuations of growth. The grand average calculated length of Green Bay whitefish (combined collections) exceeded that of Lake Michigan fish in all years of life. The advantage was greatest (2.2 inches) at 3 years (calculated lengths of 16.0 inches and 13.8 inches) and subsequently declined to 0.5 inch at 9 years (lengths of 24.6 and 24.1 inches). Both groups reached the minimum legal length of 17 inches during the fourth growing season. Green Bay whitefish also had the larger calculated weights. The advantage reached 9.3 ounces in 3 years (calculated weights of 22.4 and 13.1 ounces). In years of life 4-9, the weight advantage over Lake Michigan fish ranged from 8.7 ounces, (seventh year; weights of 74.4 and 65.7 ounces) to 12.2 ounces (ninth year; weights of 96.2 and 84.0 ounces). Comparison of growth of whitefish at four localities in northern Lake Michigan indicates that fastest growth is in central Green Bay and slowest near the Fox Islands. Growth is intermediate and similar in northwestern Lake Michigan proper and sorthern Green Bay. Youngest mature male whitefish in green Bay belonged to age group II and youngest mature females to age group III. All IV-group fish were mature. Shortest mature males were at 14.5-14.9 inches and shortest mature females at 16.5-16.9 inches. All males longer than 17.9 inches and all females longer than 18.4 inches were mature.</p>","language":"English","usgsCitation":"Mraz, D., 1964, Age, growth, sex ratio, and maturity of the whitefish in central Green Bay and adjacent waters of Lake Michigan: Fishery Bulletin of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, v. 63, no. 3, p. 619-634.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"619","endPage":"634","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":133010,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"63","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db68925b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Mraz, Donald","contributorId":21502,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Mraz","given":"Donald","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308379,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The problem is of particular concern in a large  section  of  central  Lake  Erie, where dissolved oxygen concentration may be reduced to 1 ppm or less in the hypolimnion and where the metalimnion frequently extends to or within 30 or 60 cm of the bottom (Becton 1963; Cam 1962).It is impossible to sample the hypolimnrtic waters satisfactorily with the usual Nanscn, Kemmerer, and Frautschy bottles (Carr 1962). Although the 500-ml sampler described here was designed, constructed, and used extensively and successfully to meet the particular problem in Lake Erie, it should be equally useful in a varirty of situations.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Limnology and Oceanography","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","doi":"10.4319/lo.1964.9.4.0595","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Joeris, L.S., 1964, A horizontal sampler for collection of water samples near the bottom: Limnology and Oceanography, v. 9, no. 4, p. 595-598, https://doi.org/10.4319/lo.1964.9.4.0595.","productDescription":"p. 595-598","startPage":"595","endPage":"598","numberOfPages":"3","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":128923,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266600,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.4319/lo.1964.9.4.0595"}],"volume":"9","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2003-12-22","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b24e4b07f02db6ae44c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Joeris, Leonard S.","contributorId":104430,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Joeris","given":"Leonard","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308322,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Commercial production in the Great Lakes (U.S. and Canada combined) reached a peak of nearly 16 million pounds in 1960.  Production in Lake Superior has generally been small but increased during the 1950's to reach 948,000 pounds in 1960.  All O-group and spring I-group smelt had scales with sufficient sculpturing to permit detection of the first annulus.  Annulus formation began after 6 June in 1960.  In 1961, all smelt had completed the annulus by 24 August.  The body-scale relation is a straight line with an intercept of -0.9 inch on the axis of fish length.  The weight of western Lake Superior smelt increased as the 2.952 power of the length.  A large range of length in each age group and resulting overlap of age-groups II-VI made length a poor index of age.  Female smelt grew faster than males after the second year and dominated strongly in age-groups IV-VII.  Both sexes made their best annual growth in length (3.3 inches) during their second year of life; the largest weight increments (0.74 ounce, males; 0.85 ounce, females) came in the third year.  Best production from a commercial pound net in 1961 occurred when the sex ratios of spawning smelt were nearest 50:50.  Spawning male smelt were consistently shorter than females and the average lengths of both sexes decreased as the spawning season progressed.  Shortest mature smelt of each sex were 5.0 to 5.2 inches but the males are probably the first to reach 100 percent maturity.  All year-old smelt were immature.  Among 2-year-old fish, 40.7 per cent of the males and 17.7 percent of the females had reached maturity.  All smelt more than 2 years old were mature.  Ovaries of 10 smelt contained an average of 31,338 eggs for fish 7.3 to 8.8 inches long.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Transactions of the American Fisheries Society","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","publisherLocation":"London, UK","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1964)93[382:AGMASC]2.0.CO;2","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Bailey, M.M., 1964, Age, growth and sex composition of the American smelt <i>Osmerus mordax</i>(Mitchill), of western Lake Superior: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 93, no. 4, p. 382-395, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1964)93[382:AGMASC]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"14 p.","startPage":"382","endPage":"395","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131645,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266927,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1964)93[382:AGMASC]2.0.CO;2"}],"volume":"93","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db6892a3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bailey, Merryll M.","contributorId":47724,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bailey","given":"Merryll","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308019,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Many of these anomalies show correlation with visible steaming and reflect convective transfer of heat to the surface from subterranean sources. Structural details of the volcano, some not evident from surface observation, are also delineated by their thermal abnormalities. Several changes were observed in the patterns of infrared emission during the period of study; two such changes show correlation in location with subsequent eruptions, but the cause-and-effect relationship is uncertain.</p><p id=\"p-2\">Thermal anomalies were also observed on the southwest flank of Mauna Loa; images of other volcanoes on the island of Hawaii, and of Haleakala on the island A relatively large temperature-independent component of the magnetic susceptibility was observed in all cases, and an analysis of the data shows that this component is the result of submicroscopic iron spherules in the tektites. An analysis of the color of tektites in terms of the magnetic measurements and also of the optical absorption spectra suggests that the basic color of all tektites is green or greenish-blue, and that the brown to black coloration in some tektites is due to finely dispersed Fe2O3<span>&nbsp;</span>and/or many metallic spherules, both probably of colloidal size.</p></div></div></div>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(64)90045-6","issn":"00167037","usgsCitation":"Thorpe, A.N., and Senftle, F.E., 1964, Submicroscopic spherules and color of tektites: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 28, no. 6, 15 p., https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(64)90045-6.","productDescription":"15 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219304,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"28","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9d43e4b08c986b31d736","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thorpe, A. The reaction was followed by measuring absorbance change for a fixed-time of 3</span>&nbsp;min at 537&nbsp;<span>nm. The variables such as reagent concentration, pH, buffer concentration,&nbsp;ionic strength&nbsp;and temperature were optimized to improve the selectivity and sensitivity. Under the optimized conditions, the determination of V(V) was performed in the range 1–100</span>&nbsp;μg&nbsp;L−1<span>&nbsp;</span>with limits of detection and quantification of 0.31 and 0.94&nbsp;μg&nbsp;L−1<span>. The developed&nbsp;kinetic method&nbsp;is sufficiently sensitive, selective and simple. It was successfully applied to the speciative determination of total V and inorganic dissolved&nbsp;vanadium&nbsp;species, V(V) and V(IV) in environmental water samples. The oxidizing property of&nbsp;permanganate&nbsp;is used to differentiate between V(IV) and V(V) species. The V(IV) content was found by subtracting the V(V) content from those of total V. The recovery is above 95% for V(V) spiked samples. Additionally, the accuracy was validated by analysis of a certified water sample, CRM TMDA-53.3, and the results were in good agreement with the certified value.</span></p></div></div></div>","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.arabjc.2012.06.006","issn":"00032700","usgsCitation":"Fishman, M.J., and Skougstad, M., 1964, Catalytic determination of vanadium in water: Analytical Chemistry, v. 36, no. 8, p. 1643-1646, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.arabjc.2012.06.006.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"1643","endPage":"1646","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":480367,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.arabjc.2012.06.006","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":219071,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"36","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f3b5e4b0c8380cd4b950","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fishman, M.
