Differences in minor-element content between these samples and samples of

1.

(a) nonmarine carbonaceous shales (1 to 17 per cent organic carbon),

2.

(b) nearshore marine shales (less than 1 per cent organic carbon), and

3.

(c) offshore marine shales (as much as 8 per cent organic carbon), all of the same age, reveal certain aspects of the role played by clay minerals and organic materials in affecting the minor-element composition of the rocks.

The organic carbon in the nonmarine rocks occurs in disseminated coaly plant remains. The organic carbon in the marine rocks occurs predominantly in humic material derived from terrestrial plants. The close similarity in composition between the organic isolates from the marine samples and low-rank coal suggests that the amount of marine organic material in these rocks is small.

The minor-element content of the two kinds of nonmarine shales is the same despite the relatively large amount of organic carbon in the carbonaceous shales. The nearshore marine shales, however, contain larger median amounts of arsenic, boron, chromium, vanadium and zinc than do the nonmarine rocks; and the offshore marine shales contain even larger amounts of these elements. Cobalt, molybdenum, lead and zirconium show insignificant differences in median content between the nonmarine and marine rocks, although as much as 25 ppm molybdenum is present in some offshore marine samples. The gallium content is lower in the marine than in the nonmarine samples. Copper and selenium contents of the two kinds of nonmarine rocks and the nearshore marine samples are the same, but those of the offshore samples are larger.

In general, arsenic, chromium, copper, molybdenum, selenium, vanadium and zinc are concentrated in those offshore marine samples having the largest amounts of organic carbon, but samples with equal amounts of vanadium, for instance, may differ by a factor of 3 in their amount of organic carbon. Arsenic and molybdenum occur in some samples chiefly in syngenetic pyrite but also are present in relatively large amounts in samples that contain little pyrite.

The data on nonmarine carbonaceous shales indicate that organic matter of terrestrial origin in marine shales contributes little to the minor-element content of such rocks. It is possible that marine organic matter, even though seemingly small in amount in marine shales, contributes to the minor-element composition of the shales. In addition to any such contribution, however, the great effectiveness in sorption processes of humic materials in conjunction with clay minerals suggests that such processes must have played an important role as these materials moved from the relatively dilute solutions of the nonmarine environment to the relatively concentrated solution of sea water. The volumes of sea water sufficient to supply for sorption the amounts of most minor elements in the offshore marine samples are insignificant compared to the volumes of water with which the clay and organic matter were in contact during their transportation and sedimentation. Consequently, the chemical characteristics of the environment in which the clay minerals and organic matter accumulated and underwent diagenesis probably were the most important factors in controlling the degree to which sorption processes and the formation of syngenetic minerals affected the final composition of the rocks.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(64)90008-0","issn":"00167037","usgsCitation":"Tourtelot, H.A., 1964, Minor-element composition and organic carbon content of marine and nonmarine shales of Late Cretaceous age in the western interior of the United States: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 28, no. 10-11, p. 1579-1604, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(64)90008-0.","productDescription":"26 p.","startPage":"1579","endPage":"1604","numberOfPages":"26","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219008,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"28","issue":"10-11","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a5b29e4b0c8380cd6f38b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Tourtelot, H. The reaction was followed by measuring absorbance change for a fixed-time of 3 min at 537 nm. The variables such as reagent concentration, pH, buffer concentration, ionic strength and temperature were optimized to improve the selectivity and sensitivity. Under the optimized conditions, the determination of V(V) was performed in the range 1–100 μg L−1 with limits of detection and quantification of 0.31 and 0.94 μg L−1. The developed kinetic method is sufficiently sensitive, selective and simple. It was successfully applied to the speciative determination of total V and inorganic dissolved vanadium species, V(V) and V(IV) in environmental water samples. The oxidizing property of permanganate is used to differentiate between V(IV) and V(V) species. The V(IV) content was found by subtracting the V(V) content from those of total V. The recovery is above 95% for V(V) spiked samples. Additionally, the accuracy was validated by analysis of a certified water sample, CRM TMDA-53.3, and the results were in good agreement with the certified value.

","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/j.arabjc.2012.06.006","issn":"00032700","usgsCitation":"Fishman, M.J., and Skougstad, M., 1964, Catalytic determination of vanadium in water: Analytical Chemistry, v. 36, no. 8, p. 1643-1646, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.arabjc.2012.06.006.","productDescription":"4 p.","startPage":"1643","endPage":"1646","numberOfPages":"4","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":480367,"rank":1,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.1016/j.arabjc.2012.06.006","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":219071,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"36","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5059f3b5e4b0c8380cd4b950","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fishman, M. Many of these anomalies show correlation with visible steaming and reflect convective transfer of heat to the surface from subterranean sources. Structural details of the volcano, some not evident from surface observation, are also delineated by their thermal abnormalities. Several changes were observed in the patterns of infrared emission during the period of study; two such changes show correlation in location with subsequent eruptions, but the cause-and-effect relationship is uncertain.

Thermal anomalies were also observed on the southwest flank of Mauna Loa; images of other volcanoes on the island of Hawaii, and of Haleakala on the island of Maui, revealed no thermal abnormalities.

Approximately 25 large springs issuing into the ocean around the periphery of Hawaii have been detected.

Infrared emission Some aspects of this general comparability were noted a century ago by Playfair, and other aspects were examined in a more quantitative way approximately 10 yr ago by R. E. Horton. Such similarities with respect to the channel cross section and the associated hydraulic parameters and their changes downstream were studied by some of the engineers who attained prominence for their work on the self-adjusting irrigation canals of India, especially G. Lacy,15 C. Inglis,16 and T. Blench.17 Among these men, canal characteristics were the principal objects of investigation, although natural river channels assumed an increasing share of the attention of the students of \"regime analysis,\" especially Blench. L. B. Leopold and T. The pre-Tertiary rocks consist mainly of argillites, schists, limestones, and intrusive igneous rocks, while the Tertiary rocks consist mainly of felsic and mafic volcanic tuffs, lava flows and breccias, and fluviolacustrine deposits. Quaternary rocks include terrace gravels of Pleistocene and Recent age, and stream-valley alluvium of Recent age. The rock units most widely exposed along the valley are the fluviolacustrine deposits of Miocene and Pliocene(?) age, which extend to depths of as much as a thousand feet below the valley floor, and the pre-Tertiary rocks.

Most of the rocks that underlie the valley are of relatively low permeability and yield only small to moderate quantities of water (generally less than 50 gpm) to wells. The fluviolacustrine deposits contain scattered lenses of relatively permeable sand and gravel, hut the unit as a whole is mainly silt and clay of low permeability. Two prospective irrigation wells in the area penetrated these deposits but were abandoned because of insufficient yield.

Perhaps the most permeable rock unit in the area is the Columbia River Basalt of Miocene and Pliocene(?) age. It is exposed extensively west of the main valley, but apparently occurs only' as discontinuous lenses beneath the valley floor.

Chemical analyses of water from seven wells in the area indicate that the ground waters have relatively large concentrations of dis-. solved mineral constituents. Water from two of the wells had excessive concentrations of boron and high sodium and salinity hazards with respect to use for irrigation.

Perhaps the most favorable site for a test irrigation well is about 8 to 10 miles east of Hereford, where the Columbia River Basalt apparently extends beneath, and is intercalated with, the fluviolacustrine deposits.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr64128","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation","usgsCitation":"Price, During the next few years several specialists studied the cores, and their reports are published as consecutive parts of this bulletin.
\n
Watson H. Monroe, who spent many years studying the Coastal Plain strata in Alabama and Mississippi, conceived and supervised the drilling and planned the later studies. His earlier published report (W. H. Monroe, 1955, Cores of pre-Selma Cretaceous rocks in the outcrop area in western Alabama: Gulf Coast Geol. Societies Trans., v. 5, p. 11-37) contains a brief description of the stratigraphy, together with logs and other information regarding the core holes, and he has provided the introductory chapter to this bulletin. Richard E. Bergenback studied the petrology of the cores, which included finding the distribution of grain sizes, determining the mineralogy of the grains and the matrix of the sediments, and having X-Ray identifications made of the clay minerals. Norman F. Sohl studied the mollusks and other large fossils obtained from the cores and compared them with other faunal suites collected in Alaban1a and Texas. Esther R. Applin studied the sparse microfauna, comparing it with faunas obtained from deep wells downdip in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi and with outcrop samples fron1 Texas, and has described a new species of Foraminifera. Estella B. Leopold and Helen M. Pakiser obtained a large pollen and spore assemblage by digesting carbonaceous layers of some of the cores in acid; this flora includes much new material, which is not described here.
\n
The Bergenback, Sohl, and Applin reports discuss the probable environment in which the sediments accumulated. Louis C. Conant, who spent several years studying and mapping these sediments, has written a summary chapter integrating some of the surface and subsurface information.
\n
Quarter-cuts of the cores belonging to the U.S. National Museum have been deposited on indefinite loan with the Alabama Geological Survey at University, Ala., and with the Shell Oil Co. at Jackson, Miss. It is a shallow-water derivative of the Pleistocene Lake Saginaw. Sixty-one bottom samples were collected on a semigrid pattern and analyzed physically. Findings were treated statistically. Sediments range in size from large pebbles to clay. Medium- to fine-grained clear quartz sand is common to all parts of the bay. Currents and wave action are primarily responsible for both median diameter and sorting distribution patterns. Only a very general correlation can be established between depth and median diameter. Heavy minerals occur in abundance locally and show an affinity to shallow-water areas subject to prevailing currents. Shape also locally determines heavy mineral concentrations. Only general conclusions can be established from roundness and sphericity and acid-soluble content. Increased organic content is correlative with quiet water environments. The shallow-water, heterogeneous nature of Saginaw Bay is not conducive to the recognition of sedimentary criteria suitable for correlations in other than a local environment.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Sedimentary Petrology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"SEPM Society for Sedimentary Geology","publisherLocation":"Tulsa, OK","doi":"10.1306/74D71000-2B21-11D7-8648000102C1865D","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Wood, L.E., 1964, Bottom sediments of Saginaw Bay, Michigan: Journal of Sedimentary Petrology, v. 34, no. 1, p. 173-184, https://doi.org/10.1306/74D71000-2B21-11D7-8648000102C1865D.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"173","endPage":"184","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131764,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":267262,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1306/74D71000-2B21-11D7-8648000102C1865D"}],"volume":"34","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fcdf1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wood, Leonard E.","contributorId":73157,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wood","given":"Leonard","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308612,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
