This is part of NASA’s long-range inquiry to determine the kinds of scientific activities which might profitably be carried out on future space missions. Among such future activities which are now being planned by NASA are a series of manned earth orbital missions, many of which would be devoted to research. Experiments in physics, astronomy, geophysics, meteorology, and biology are being discussed for these long-range missions. For convenience there are also included records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, under the direction of Malcolm D. Hale, district engineer, Surface Water Branch.
\n
\n
This report marks the beginning of a new method of presenting, annually, basic data on surface-water records by States. Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in Indiana were contained in Parts 3A, 4 and 5 of that series.
\n
\n
Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data will be released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these basic-data reports will be limited and primarily for local needs. The records later will be published in Geological Survey water-supply papers at 5-year intervals. These 5-year water-supply papers will show daily discharge and will be compiled on the same geographical areas previously used for the annual series; however, some of the 14 parts of coterminous United States will be further subdivided.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Indianapolis, IN","doi":"10.3133/70106994","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with Indiana Flood Control and Water Resources Commission; State Department of Conservation, Division of Water Resources; State Highway Commission; State Board of Health; Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army","usgsCitation":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey, 1964, Surface water records of Indiana, 1964, vii, 208 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70106994.","productDescription":"vii, 208 p.","numberOfPages":"218","temporalStart":"1963-10-01","temporalEnd":"1964-09-30","costCenters":[{"id":629,"text":"Water Resources Division","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":287926,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":287925,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/unnumbered/70106994/report.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Indiana","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -88.0979,37.7717 ], [ -88.0979,41.7607 ], [ -84.7847,41.7607 ], [ -84.7847,37.7717 ], [ -88.0979,37.7717 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"537b2808e4b0929ba496abc7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","contributorId":128075,"corporation":true,"usgs":false,"organization":"Water Resources Division, U.S. Geological Survey","id":535654,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

With rising sea level there is a maximum thickness of salt-marsh peat for any given productivity of marsh grass. Because of this limitation, most marshes older than about 5500 years B.P. have been drowned. An important effect of peat autocompaction is the intrusion of wood into older peat horizons and the juxtaposition of wood of different ages. Wood, therefore, should be avoided in the dating of peat profiles. The roots of salt-marsh plants generally descend a foot or more beneath the rhizomes, contaminating older horizons insofar as radiocarbon dating is concerned. This contamination tends to make dates from marsh samples err on the young side. Sixteen radiocarbon dates from the Boston area are used to construct a sea-level curve going back to 14,000 years B.P. Relative sea level was at +60 feet or higher 14,000 years B.P., dropping sharply to approximately -70 feet about 10,000 years B.P. From a low of -70 feet, sea level rose steadily to about -2 feet approximately 3000 years B.P. Since then sea level appears to have kept close to its present level, probably fluctuating about a foot during the course of the stillstand. A crustal movement curve, based on the relative sea-level curve for Boston and the eustatic curve, indicates that about 290 feet of crustal rise occurred between 14,000-6000 years B.P., with a maximum rate of uplift of about 0.2 foot per year at 12,750 years B.P., and that from 6000 to 3000 years B.P., crustal subsidence occurred at Boston. © 1964, The Geological Society of America, Inc.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1964)75[63:LQSCAC]2.0.CO;2","issn":"00167606","usgsCitation":"Kaye, C.A., and Barghoorn, E., 1964, Late quaternary sea-level change and crustal rise at Boston, Massachusetts, with notes on the autocompaction of peat: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 75, no. 2, p. 63-80, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1964)75[63:LQSCAC]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"18 p. An investigation of the distribution of these pebbles shows the bedrock source of the wood to be tuffaceous beds that apparently overlie older granite in the Middleboro-Plympton area, Massachusetts, and are at the base of the Carboniferous rocks of the Narragansett Basin. A second center of distribution of the wood may lie offshore, north of Cape Cod. It is estimated that many thousands of large logs were broken up and carried away from the outcrop by Pleistocene ice sheets in the production of the boulder train. © 1964, The Geological Society of These anomalies are superposed on larger magnetic features related to pendants of volcanic rock in the roof of a granite batholith and are distinguished from large lateral variations in magnetic intensity by their low amplitude and small areal extent. Analyses of the compound anomalies yielded the subsurface configuration of isolated roof pendants of resistant extrusive rock in some areas. The chromite characteristically is anhedral and commonly shows effects of granulation and magmatic corrosion. Flow-layering, foliation, and lineation are parallel in most chromite deposits and peridotite host rocks, and normally pass through major rock units, including chromite; locally, foliation and lineation may cross layering. Most podiform deposits are oriented with their longer dimensions essentially parallel to layering or foliation in the host peridotite, but some are crosswise. In all podiform deposits, whether parallel or crosswise, internal flow structures are, to use Hans Cloos' terminology, harmonious with those in the country rock, except where disturbed by postmagmatic faulting. The relations between podiform and stratiform deposits are analogous to those between metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Though relict structures formed by crystal settling are preserved in some massive ore, most features in podiform deposits are due to extensive flowage during re-emplacement, under magmatic conditions. As the rules governing sedimentary rocks apply in exploration of stratiform deposits, so metamorphic principles apply to podiform deposits. Evidence is presented to show that the chromite deposits in the Gule-man-Soridag district, Turkey, are podiform ; and that the Golalan ore body is closely related to nearby gabbroic rocks of normal alpine type. The Soridag deposits are regarded as originally podiform rather than as fault segments of stratiform deposits.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.59.8.1497","usgsCitation":"Thayer, T.P., 1964, Principal features and origin of podiform chro-mite deposits, and some observations on the Guleman-Soridag District, Turkey: Economic Geology, v. 59, no. 8, p. 1497-1524, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.59.8.1497.","productDescription":"28 p.","startPage":"1497","endPage":"1524","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386137,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"Turkey","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              29.28955078125,\n              41.29431726315258\n            ],\n            [\n              25.51025390625,\n              40.245991504199026\n            ],\n            [\n              25.7958984375,\n              38.09998264736481\n            ],\n            [\n              27.75146484375,\n              35.47856499535729\n            ],\n            [\n              33.59619140624999,\n              35.90684930677121\n            ],\n            [\n              36.01318359374999,\n              36.527294814546245\n            ],\n            [\n              39.70458984374999,\n              37.92686760148135\n            ],\n            [\n              39.90234375,\n              40.97989806962013\n            ],\n            [\n              35.04638671874999,\n              42.17968819665961\n            ],\n            [\n              29.28955078125,\n              41.29431726315258\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"59","issue":"8","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1964-12-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Thayer, T.
