This report illustrates and describes the detailed stratigraphic framework and coal correlation of the Upper Cretaceous Fruitland Formation exposed in isolated badlands and along washes within a 20-mile outcrop belt in the Bisti-Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah area, southwestern San Juan Basin, Nex Mexico (see index). The stratigraphic framework showing the vertical and lateral distributions of rock types and the lateral continuity of coal beds is illustrated in cross sections. The cross sections were constructed from 112 stratigraphic sections measured at an average distance of 0.4 mi apart. Each section contained key marker beds (sandstone, coal, and tonstein) that were physically traced to adjacent sections. Each measured section was \"hung\" on multiple marker beds arranged in a geometric best-fit method that accounts for the differential compaction and facies associations of the deposits.

Geologic interpretation of seismic reflection profiles on the Continental Shelves of Oregon and Washington is measurably enhanced through the knowledge of Tertiary subsurface stratigraphy penetrated in 10 deep exploration wells drilled in the mid-1960's (Braislin and others, 1971; Snavely and others, 1977). These subsurface data make it possible to relate to the acoustic units differentiated on seismic-reflection profiles to time-stratigraphic units as determined from micropalentontological studies of samples collected from these wells. These biostratigraphic data also permit correlations between time-stratigraphic units in the offshore test wells and between those units and formations penetrated in onshore test wells, as well as strata that crop out in coastal Oregon and Washington.

The Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577, September 3, 1964) and related acts require the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines to survey certain areas on Federal lands to determine their mineral-resource potential.  Results must be made available to the public and be submitted to the President and the Congress.  This report presents the results of a geologic survey of the Domeland Wilderness and contiguous roadless areas in the Sequoia National Forest, Kern and Tulare Counties, California.  The Domeland Wilderness was established by Public Law 88-577 (1964).  The Woodpecker Roadless Area (05206) and the Domeland Addition Roadless Areas (05207) were classified as further planning areas during the Second Roadless Area Review and Evaluation (RARE II) by the U.S. Forest Service, January 1979.

The earthquake data shown on this map and listed in table 1 are a list of earthquakes that were originally used in preparing the Seismic Risk Studies in the United States in the United States (Algermissen, 1969) which have been recompiled and updated through 1977. These data have been reexamined which resulted in some revisions of epicenters and intensities as well as assignment of intensities to earthquakes that previously had none assigned. Intensity values were updated from new and additional data sources that were not available at the time of original compilation. Some epicenters were relocated on the basis of new information. The data shown in table 1 are estimates of the most accurate epicenter, magnitude, and intensity of each earthquake, on the basis of historical and current information. Some of the aftershocks from large earthquakes are listed but are incomplete in many instances, especially for ones that occurred before seismic instruments were in universal usage.

The gravity field of the Chignik and Sutwik Island\nquadrangles near the center of the Alaska Peninsula represents\na complex series of transitions between probable\ncontinental crust on the north, probable oceanic crust on the\nsouth, sedimentary basins on each side of the peninsula, and a\ncentral structural high and volcanic arc. The resulting\ngravity field may be generalized as a central southwest- to\nnortheast-trending gravity high bordered on both sides by\nflanking gravity lows over sedimentary basins underlying the\nlowlands and continental shelf. All three gravitational\nfeatures show discontinuities and magnitude variations that\nreflect the complex geologic setting.

Data concerning this complex gravity field have accumulated\nslowly and intermittently since an initial measurement\nwas made at Port Heiden more than 25 years go (Thiel\nand others, 1958, 1959). A few reconnaissance measurements\nby R. V. Allen and an offshore traverse conducted by the U.S.\nCoast and Geodetic Survey R/V Surveyor were made in the\nearly 1960's (Barnes and others, 1966; Barnes, 1967). At\nabout the same time, Gulf Oil Corp. contracted for a\nrelatively detailed survey of the lowlands on the north shore\nof the peninsula; the map prepared from this survey is now\navailable (Gulf Oil Corp., Port Moller Development Contract\nReport, available at U.S. Geological Survey, Anchorage,\nAlaska). In the early 1970's, a few new land measurements\nwere made by P. L. Dobey, of the Alaska Division of\nGeological and Geophysical Surveys, and an offshore traverse\nwas completed by the R/V C. Greene on contract to the U.S.\nGeological Survey (Fisher, 1979, and M. A. Fisher, written\ncommun., 1977). The most recent measurements, the basis\nfor this map, were made by M. E. Yount, D. L. Detra, D. R.\nJefferis, and J. E. Case during the mineral assessment of the\ntwo quadrangles. D. F. Barnes, R. L. Morin, D. R. Jefferis,\nand R. F. Sikora have shared in the data compilation.\nGeologic background for the text was provided by R. L.\nDetterman, T. P. Miller, E. Young, and F. H. Wilson (1979,\n1981).

The Blake Escarpment is a steep cliff tlmt trends north-south approximately 400 km east of Florida. Across the escarpment, which marks the eastern edge of the Blake Plateau, water depths increase from about 1,500 m to 5,000 m.

In the past few years the area has been surveyed by the following U.S. Geological Survey cruises: 1. R/V Eastward (cruise 80-8); 2. R/V Starel!a; 3. R/V Gittiss,(cruise 79-3-5); 4. M/V Coral Seal; and 5. R/V Fay (cruise 025) (fig. 1), For this report, bathymetric information from these cruises has been compiled and contoured. Data from earlier surveys of the area (Pratt and Heezen, 1964) were not used because of uncertainties concerning their navigation.

The data for the aeromagnetic map of the Baker-Cypress and Timbered crater areas were collected in 1978 and compiled at a scale of 1 :62,500 (U,S, Geological Survey, 1979). East-west traverses were spaced at 0.8-km intervals at a constant altitude of 1370 m (4500 ft) above sea level, Contour interval is 20 and 100 gammas, depending upon the steepness of local gradients in the Earth's magnetic field. A regional magnetic field (the International Geomagnetic Reference Field - 1975, updated to the month flown) of approximately 5-6 gammas/km was removed from the data be fore con touring.
