This report is presented in four parts with a separate summary.</p><p>Part A: Lunar and planetary investigations (with map supplement). Geologic mapping of the Moon involves discrimination of the different materials exposed on the lunar surface and their assignment to geologic units, the determination of the photometric characteristics of these materials, delineation of the boundaries of the units and determination of their stratigraphic sequence.</p><p>Part B: Crater investigations. These include field studies of terrestrial craters, hypervelocity impact experiments with rocks and other materials, studies of the behavior of rocks under high shock loads, and experimental and field studies of shock metamorphism in rocks.</p><p>Part C: Cosmochemistry and petrography. Studies are being made of the chemical, petrographic, and physical properties of materials of extraterrestrial origin and of certain materials associated with terrestrial impact structures. The studies reported in Part C are concerned with tektites, terrestrial impactites, metallic spherules formed by the Meteor Crater impact event, and particles of possible cosmic origin.</p><p>Part D: Studies for space flight program. These studies are undertaken to aid in the design of space flight experiments and the planning of space missions. These areas are: the Morelock Creek area, on the north side of the Yukon River about 30 miles upstream from Tanana; the Moran Dome area, about 16 miles north of the Yukon River and 25 miles northwest of Tanana; the Mason Creek area, on the north side of the Yukon River about 36 miles west of Tanana; and the Ruby-Long area, on the south side of the Yukon River near Ruby and about 40 miles east of Galena. The only extensive placer mining in these areas has been in the Ruby-Long area. Other placer deposits including some cassiterite are known in central Alaska but are not discussed in this report. \r\n\r\nBedrock in these areas is predominantly schist of various types with some associated greenstone and other metamorphic rocks. Some granite is exposed in the Moran Dome and Ruby-Long areas and in areas close to Morelock and Mason Creeks. Barren, milky quartz veins and veinlets transecting the metamorphic rocks are common. No cassiterite was found in the bedrock, and no bedrock source of the tin has been reported. In the Moran Dome and Mason Creek areas, and in part of the Ruby-Long area, tourmaline is present in the rocks of the tin-bearing drainage basins, and apparently absent elsewhere in these areas. \r\n\r\nThe placer deposits are in both valley floor and bench alluvium, which are predominantly relatively thin, rarely exceeding a thickness of 30 feet. Most of the alluvium deposits are not perennially frozen. \r\n\r\nIn the Morelock Creek area tin-bearing deposits are 5 to 5? miles above the mouth of the creek, and meager evidence indicates that cassiterite and gold are present in Morelock Creek valley and some of the tributaries both upstream and downstream from these deposits. The concentrates recovered in samples average about 57 percent tin, and the gold averages about 922 fine. Prospecting indicates that the placer tin deposits are small and of relatively low grade, and that the greater part of the value of the deposits is the gold. In the Moran Dome area the known tin-bearing deposits are in the valley floor and bench gravels along upper Tozimoran Creek. Much of the alluvium is unfrozen, but the deeper portions of the bench gravels and the gravels some distance from the streams are in part frozen. Tin-bearing samples have been obtained from prospect pits and drill holes at a number of sites on Tozimoran Creek between its head and the confluence with Slate Creek. Gold recovered from some of these samples has a fineness of 835. The presence of cassiterite and gold on Ash Creek has been confirmed by sampling. Cassiterite and gold reportedly occur on upper Melozimoran Creek, and several other stream valleys in this area may be tin bearing. \r\n\r\nIn the Mason Creek area cassiterite has been reported in the valley floor and bench alluvial deposits on Mason Creek, but its presence could not be confirmed in the brief field examinations of creek and dump-pile gravel that were made. The limited number of pits and cuts available precluded a valid sampling without additional drilling, pitting, or trenching. \r\n\r\nIn the Ruby-Long area the valleys of Midnight, Birch, and Big Creeks are known to have appreciable concentrations of cassiterite in the gold-bearing placer deposits. The alluvial deposits in the valleys of Ruby, Glacier, Flint, Trail, Long, Fifth of July, Short, Flat, Greenstone, and Monument Creeks contain some cassiterite, but sufficient information could not be obtained to make an evaluation of these occurrences. The occurrences predominate in marine phosphorites, black marine shales, and deposits in terrestrial-fluvial sandstones and ancient conglomerites. In early Paleozoic times, marine shales accounted for the majority of uranium deposition. By the beginning of Tertiary time, the balance had shifted to predominant deposition in marine phosphorites which continued to the present. Much smaller total quantities of uranium are associated with terrestrial sandstones and ancient conglomerates, although its concentration is greater and its economic recovery is more feasible. All the abnormal occurrences fit into a unique niche in the hydrologic cycle, and emplacement was largely controlled by cycles of organic substances in water.</p><p>Radiochemical analyses of Pa<sub>231</sub>, Th<sub>230</sub>, and Ra<sub>226</sub> were made on a few hundred samples from sandstone-type uranium deposits. (see inset map).</p><p>The purpose of the structure-contour map presented here is to aid exploration by showing the elevations at which the Olive Hill Clay Bed occurs. The strudure contours indicate the depths that mu;,t be reached in prospecting for the clay. The approximate depth of the clay at any one point is the difference between elevations of the structure and topographic contours. The clay has been thoroughly prospected along its out.crop belt and in most areas \\Vhe re it lies under overburden less than 200 feet thick. Because of lack of quantitative data to describe some of the factors and complex interrelations among them, complete analysis of the relations between streamflow and the various environmental factors is impossible. However, certain simplifying assumptions and generalizations made possible a partial analysis for the Delaware River region. For relations involving average runoff or low-flow parameters, average annual precipitation was assumed to be the principal meteorological factor, and geology (a complex of many factors) was assumed to be the principal terrestrial influence, except for that of basin size which was largely eliminated by expression of discharge in terms of unit area. As a first approximation, physiographic units were used as a basis for classifying the geology. Relations between flow parameters and precipitation are fairly well defined for some physiographic units, but not for those in which the geology varies markedly or the areal variation in average precipitation is very small. These relations provide a basis for adjusting the flow parameters to reduce or eliminate the effects of areal variations in precipitation and increase their significance in studies of the effects of terrestrial characteristics. An investigation of the residual effect of basin size (the effect remaining when discharge is expressed in terms of unit area) on relations between flow parameters and average precipitation indicates that such effect is negligible, except for very large differences in area. Parameters that are derived from base-flow recession curves and are related to a common discharge per unit area have inherent advantages as indicators of effects of terrestrial characteristics of basins, because the.y are independent of areal variations in average annual precipitation. Winter base-flow parameters are also practically independent of the effects of evapotranspiration from ground water. However, in many parts of the region these advantages are reduced or nullified by the difficulties of defining base-flow recession curves, particularly winter curves, with sufficient accuracy. In the absence of suitable base-flow recession data and a suitable basis for adjusting parameters, the ratio of the discharge equaled or exceeded 90 percent of the time to the average discharge (Qtt/Qa), or a similar duration parameter, probably is the best indicator of the influence of terrestrial characteristics, although the ratio may vary somewhat with average precipitation. In a part of the region where geologic differences are large and areal variations in average precipitation are small, values of Qm/Qa for each major geologic unit were determined from streamflow records. From these values and the percentage of area represented by each unit, a ratio for each gaging station was computed. Comparison of these computed results with the observed results indicates that nearly all of the variation in the ratio is associated with variation in geology. The investigation indicates that the original assumptions are correct; average precipitation is the principal meteorological influence and geology is the principal terrestrial influence.
