Morphologic variation in the genus has been recognized by earlier workers, but few have tried to show exact relationships among the various forms. The present writers have attempted to trace the development of the genus through geologic time. Only North American species and varieties of Composita are treated in this paper. Forty-two species and varieties are included in a phylogenetic history of the genus. Nine other species are listed as doubtful forms. Eighteen specific and varietal names are rejected by the writers as obsolete. Morphologic intergradation among associated, synchronous forms is studied with the aid of frequency polygons. Lack of clear separation of the associated species within different maxima of the polygons indicates their dominant intergradation. These forms, previously described qualitatively, are regarded as typological species. A statistical method is used to test for differences between collections containing the same typological species. Significant differences in the slopes of reduced major axes are obtained in length-width, length-depth and depth-width plots of two collections containing Composita subtilita and Composita argentea. Significant differences also are obtained when two collections of Composita subtilita, Composita ovata and Composita elongata are compared in the same way. In spite of these results, slight nomenclatural changes are thought to be unnecessary. Use of the triangular graph as a means of distinguishing vertical subspecies is also tested. Four collections are plotted on one graph and five artificially separated groups of Composita subtilita on another. Mixed results are obtained. The method is suspect because the results are found to depend largely on the number of specimens used.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society for Sedimentary Geology","usgsCitation":"Grinnell, R.S., and Andrews, G., 1964, Morphologic studies of the brachiopod genus Composita: Journal of Paleontology, v. 38, no. 2, p. 227-248.","productDescription":"22 p.","startPage":"227","endPage":"248","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":372845,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"38","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Grinnell, Robert S.","contributorId":222946,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Grinnell","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"S.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":783618,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Andrews, George W.","contributorId":40621,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Andrews","given":"George W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":783619,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

The maximum recorded trap life was 29 months, and the greatest estimated age was 36 months. Opossums did not enter traps readily, and the average period between consecutive captures was 31 days. Trap records indicated that opossums range over long, narrow areas rather than circular ones, probably associated with stream courses. Opossums begin to breed in Maryland in early February and young are found in the pouch until August. Evidently the first breeding period accounts for most of the young produced. The sex ratio of those trapped was slightly higher for males than females, but did not differ significantly from an expected sample from an even sex ratio. The trapping results indicated a production rate of from 4 to 5.4 young per adult female, but this is based on the assumption that young and adults have the same trap response. Opossums appear to favor low, damp woods rather than upland woods or open areas.
","language":"English","publisher":"Oxford Academic","doi":"10.2307/1377299","usgsCitation":"Llewellyn, L.M., A graph of water temperatures and well depths suggests that there is a very small vertical temperature gradient in local segments of the aquifer. The small gradient is believed to result from a large vertical component of flow that tends to equalize the vertical temperature distribution. On a regional scale the apparent horizontal temperature distribution indicates a westward increase with increasing depth of the aquifer, suggesting a manifestation of the regional geothermal gradient. The westward increase in temperature also implies that the lateral component of flow may be in the normal range for artesian carbonate-rock aquifers whose pores consist mainly of solution cavities. Locally, pumping appears to have affected the temperature distribution by modifying the natural flow pattern. In parts of the most intensively developed area, the aquifer is hydraulically connected with overlying coastal-plain deposits, and some cooler water has been induced to move into the aquifer from this source. Nevertheless, a unique study was made of the hydrologic cycle of small stream basins in Wisconsin and New Jersey on the basis of measurements relative to the peak of tritium fallout in the spring of 1958. The continental and the coastal basins received approximately the same tritium fallout. Approximately 30 percent went into ground-water storage, the remainder being exported as runoff and evapotranspiration. With increasing frequency, the hydrologist\nfinds it necessary to study the literature of the soil mechanics and\nsoil physics disciplines for assistance in the solution of hydrologic\nproblems. Because of the inter-relation between hydrology and soil\nmechanics and soil physics, hydrologists also are preparing an increasing\nnumber of technical papers ·for use by these two disciplines.\nTo permit the hydrologist to better understand specialized literature,\nas well as to assist him in preparing papers for these disciplines,\nthis glossary of soil mechanics and soil physics nomenclature was prepared.\nIt is a compilation from standards, dictionaries, and glossaries published\nby technical societies, and from reports by selected authorities in the\nfields of soil mechanics and soil physics. The variety of symbols and\ndefinitions presented for many of the terms demonstrates the difficulty\nthat has been encountered over the years in reaching agreement on such a\nsubject as nomenclature. Both old and new definitions and symbols are\npresented to assist the hydrologist in reading literature. Whenever\npossible the more recent symbols and nomenclature should be used by the\nhydrologist in writing papers for soil mechanics or soil physics audiences.\nWhen the hydrologist finds it necessary to use symbols or terms not included\nin the present list, he should try to select those not in conflict with the\nrecent systems presented in this report.\nSymbols are listed in alphabetical order to assist readers in finding\nthe term represented by a given symbol. Terms also are listed alphabetically,\nusually followed by recommended symbols and brief definitions.\nWhere two or more symbols or definitions are listed following a term, no\nsignificance should be placed on the order of presentation. The source is\nindicated for each symbol, term, or definition, and the sources are listed\nin the cited references.\nIt is emphasized that this report is only a compilation of nomenclature\ngenerally accepted in the soil mechanics apd soil physics disciplines.\nIt does not necessarily represent the recommendations or usage of such\nnomenclature by the Geological Survey or any part of its organization.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Denver, CO","doi":"10.3133/70094923","usgsCitation":"Johnson, A., 1964, Soil mechanics and soil physics symbols and nomenclature useful in hydrologic studies: Open-File Report, 50 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/70094923.","productDescription":"50 p.","numberOfPages":"53","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":282776,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/70094923.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"53cd732ce4b0b29085108c64","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Johnson, A.I.","contributorId":82676,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"A.I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":490965,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
