Extremes are represented by (a) the Llano Estacado, where the drought had negligible effect upon ground-water resources, which are being progressively depleted by pumping for irrigation; and (b) the Balcones fault-zone aquifer west of San Antonio, whose storage and natural discharge declined substantially during the drought, but increased even more rapidly during succeeding years of more abundant The valley is filled with alluvium, and ground water in the alluvium discharges as subsurface outflow through an alluvium-filled gap at the east end of the valley. Occasionally surface water from cloudburst floods also discharges in a wash through the gap at the east end of the valley.\r\n\r\nA northeastward extension of the major fault along the south side of the valley acts as a barrier to the discharge of ground water from the valley. The average ground-water gradient is less than 1 foot per mile across the main part of the valley above this barrier, but the water level drops abruptly across the fault. The ground-water storage capacity of the uppermost 100 feet of saturated alluvium beneath the central valley area is estimated to be about 230,000 acre-feet. All this water in storage occurs at depths greater than 95 feet below the land surface and cannot be reached by plants or animals. During 1959 virtually all the water pumped in the area was withdrawn from storage. However, the quantity of water pumped is small in relation to the total quantity in storage. This report is presented in four parts with a separate summary.</p><p>Part A: Lunar and planetary investigations (with map supplement). Geologic mapping of the Moon involves discrimination of the different materials exposed on the lunar surface and their assignment to geologic units, the determination of the photometric characteristics of these materials, delineation of the boundaries of the units and determination of their stratigraphic sequence.</p><p>Part B: Crater investigations. These include field studies of terrestrial craters, hypervelocity impact experiments with rocks and other materials, studies of the behavior of rocks under high shock loads, and experimental and field studies of shock metamorphism in rocks.</p><p>Part C: Cosmochemistry and petrography. Studies are being made of the chemical, petrographic, and physical properties of materials of extraterrestrial origin and of certain materials associated with terrestrial impact structures. The studies reported in Part C are concerned with tektites, terrestrial impactites, metallic spherules formed by the Meteor Crater impact event, and particles of possible cosmic origin.</p><p>Part D: Studies for space flight program. These studies are undertaken to aid in the design of space flight experiments and the planning of space missions. (see inset map).</p><p>The purpose of the structure-contour map presented here is to aid exploration by showing the elevations at which the Olive Hill Clay Bed occurs. The strudure contours indicate the depths that mu;,t be reached in prospecting for the clay. The approximate depth of the clay at any one point is the difference between elevations of the structure and topographic contours. The clay has been thoroughly prospected along its out.crop belt and in most areas \\Vhe re it lies under overburden less than 200 feet thick.
