Publication of Lyons' gravity map of the United States in 1950 focused attention on a spectacular geophysical feature now generally referred to as the \"midcontinent gravity high.\" This feature, the largest gravity maximum in North America, was discovered and later detailed by geophysicists at the University of Wisconsin (Woollard, 1943, 1951) and Thiel (1956). Their work reveals an essentially continuous large positive gravity anomaly extending southwestward for 800 miles from Lake Superior to the Salina Basin in Kansas. The midcontinent gravity high reaches its maximum intensity in central Iowa where the Bouguer anomaly ranges from -100 to 60 milligals.

In September-October 1961, the U. S. Geological Survey made a 5,000 square mile aeromagnetic survey in north-central Iowa in cooperation with the Iowa Geological Survey. Objectives of the investigation were to prepare and interpret a detailed aeromagnetic contour map for part of the midcontinent gravity high in Iowa. Analysis of the magnetic data could be expected to yield estimates of local thickness of the Paleozoic-Mesozoic sedimentary section and provide a basis for informed speculation about the character, configuration, and distribution of the Precambrian rocks. Such information would have obvious scientific and possible economic value in an area covered by glacial till and for which little deep subsurface knowledge was available. Interpretation of the Indiana aeromagnetic survey (Henderson and Zietz, 1958) had previously demonstrated that aeromagnetic data from the central stable region of North America would provide a significant amount of geologic information.

The 5,000 square mile area surveyed in 1961 has been combined with a previously unpublished 600 square mile aeromagnetic survey made in 1953, centered on Manson, Pocahontas Co., Iowa. The combined area is shown as the patterned area in figure 1. The unpatterned area outlined on this same figure is the additional 10,000 square mile cooperative aeromagnetic survey made in the summer of 1962 to complete coverage of the midcontinent gravity high in Iowa.

The primary purpose of this report is to make the 1953 and 1961 aeromagnetic data available to the public in advance of more formal publication. Only salient magnetic features are discussed in this preliminary presentation and in a second report on results obtained during the 1962 flying. A more complete interpretation of the entire aeromagnetic survey will be prepared.

The effects of the recent drought 1942-56 have varied widely in the Southwestern basins of interior drainage which include, in addition to the Great Basin of Nevada, Utah, and California many smaller basins in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. These closed basins are characteristically separate hydrologic units, and their water resources may logically be developed and regulated independently, which is not true of the subdivisions of the Rio Grande and Colorado River basin. Several topographically closed basins are independent hydrologic units with respect to surface water but are interconnected by ground-water circulation.

The district is underlain by a central lenticular pluton of albite \r\ngranodiorite that trends north-northeastward and is flanked on both sides by \r\nmetamorphic rocks of low and medium grade that dip steeply westward. The \r\nrelative ages of the metamorphic rocks are uncertain. The oldest rocks are \r\nlikely to be the biotite gneisses in the eastern part of the district; successively younger units expose westward across the district are sericite-chlorite phyllites, greenstone, metafelsites, and metabasalts.\r\n\r\nThe biotite gneisses and minor intercalated hornblende gneiss, which have \r\na total thickness of many thousand feet, were derived from sediments. Some \r\nof the gneiss grades into phyllites and as probably formed by metasomatic alteration of the phyllites. Sericite-chlorite phyllite, epidote-quartz meta siltstone, quartzite, and conglomeratic phyllite occur principally in a wide belt on the west side of the central albite granodiorite. This unit is some 10,000 feet thick and originally consisted mainly of sediments of the graywacke suite. Greenstone totaling about 500 feet in thickness lies west of the phyllite and was derived from maflc lava flows and andesitic tuff. Metamorphosed massive aphanitic and porphyritic flows and dikes that range in composition from dacite to rhyolite, and phyllitic metatuffs and tuffaceous breccia are exposed west of the greenstone. These total at least 3,000 feet in thickness. Massive metabasalt that resembles greenstone but is less altered is common in the area between the Hamme district and the Virgilina district to the west. The thickness of the metabasalt is about 600 to 6,000 feet.\r\n\r\nThe metamorphic rocks of the Hamme and Virgilina districts are parts of the Carolina slate belt, but map units cannot be directly correlated. Rocks in \r\nthe Hamme district are thought by the writer to have been derived mainly \r\nfrom graywackes and volcanic flows, and subordinately from pyroclastic materials, whereas the rocks of the Virgilina district were interpreted by earlier workers as being mainly volcanic with much pyroclastic material but little sediment.\r\n\r\nIgneous, and perhaps pseudo igneous, rocks in the district include hornblende \r\ngabbro, albite granodiorite, aplite, and pegmatite--all of which are probably \r\nmiddle Paleozoic in age--and diabase and hypersthene tonalite of Late Triassic age. The gabbro forms three lenticular to subcircular bodies up to 2% miles in width in the western part of the area. Albite granodiorite forms a pluton with a maximum width of 7 miles which occupies the center of the area. At its northeastern end the pluton narrows abruptly to a point. Phyllite forms the wall rocks on all sides of the albite granodiorite. The contact is gradational and conformable in most places, but on the northwest side it cuts across wall structure for about 3 miles. Near its western edge the albite granodiorite includes a northeast-trending zone of schistose wall rock in and near which are localized the tungsten deposits. The origin of the albite granodiorite is uncertain, but it may have formed by the metasomatic replacement of the wallrocks, during which albite porphyroblasts developed first and were followed by microcline and quartz. Diabase and hypersthene tonalite occur as dikes and sills along four northward-trending belts. The dikes are a few feet to more than 300 feet thick, and several extend along strike for more than 10 miles.\r\n\r\nThe Hamme district Is in the eastern part of the Carolina slate belt, and \r\nthe Virg1l1na district lies along the western side of the belt. Rocks in the \r\nHamme district dip mostly westward and in the Vifg1lina district dip mainly eastward into a syncline. These areas are: the Morelock Creek area, on the north side of the Yukon River about 30 miles upstream from Tanana; the Moran Dome area, about 16 miles north of the Yukon River and 25 miles northwest of Tanana; the Mason Creek area, on the north side of the Yukon River about 36 miles west of Tanana; and the Ruby-Long area, on the south side of the Yukon River near Ruby and about 40 miles east of Galena. The only extensive placer mining in these areas has been in the Ruby-Long area. Other placer deposits including some cassiterite are known in central Alaska but are not discussed in this report. \r\n\r\nBedrock in these areas is predominantly schist of various types with some associated greenstone and other metamorphic rocks. Some granite is exposed in the Moran Dome and Ruby-Long areas and in areas close to Morelock and Mason Creeks. Barren, milky quartz veins and veinlets transecting the metamorphic rocks are common. No cassiterite was found in the bedrock, and no bedrock source of the tin has been reported. In the Moran Dome and Mason Creek areas, and in part of the Ruby-Long area, tourmaline is present in the rocks of the tin-bearing drainage basins, and apparently absent elsewhere in these areas. \r\n\r\nThe placer deposits are in both valley floor and bench alluvium, which are predominantly relatively thin, rarely exceeding a thickness of 30 feet. Most of the alluvium deposits are not perennially frozen. \r\n\r\nIn the Morelock Creek area tin-bearing deposits are 5 to 5? miles above the mouth of the creek, and meager evidence indicates that cassiterite and gold are present in Morelock Creek valley and some of the tributaries both upstream and downstream from these deposits. The concentrates recovered in samples average about 57 percent tin, and the gold averages about 922 fine. Prospecting indicates that the placer tin deposits are small and of relatively low grade, and that the greater part of the value of the deposits is the gold. In the Moran Dome area the known tin-bearing deposits are in the valley floor and bench gravels along upper Tozimoran Creek. Much of the alluvium is unfrozen, but the deeper portions of the bench gravels and the gravels some distance from the streams are in part frozen. Tin-bearing samples have been obtained from prospect pits and drill holes at a number of sites on Tozimoran Creek between its head and the confluence with Slate Creek. Gold recovered from some of these samples has a fineness of 835. The presence of cassiterite and gold on Ash Creek has been confirmed by sampling. Cassiterite and gold reportedly occur on upper Melozimoran Creek, and several other stream valleys in this area may be tin bearing. \r\n\r\nIn the Mason Creek area cassiterite has been reported in the valley floor and bench alluvial deposits on Mason Creek, but its presence could not be confirmed in the brief field examinations of creek and dump-pile gravel that were made. The limited number of pits and cuts available precluded a valid sampling without additional drilling, pitting, or trenching. \r\n\r\nIn the Ruby-Long area the valleys of Midnight, Birch, and Big Creeks are known to have appreciable concentrations of cassiterite in the gold-bearing placer deposits. The alluvial deposits in the valleys of Ruby, Glacier, Flint, Trail, Long, Fifth of July, Short, Flat, Greenstone, and Monument Creeks contain some cassiterite, but sufficient information could not be obtained to make an evaluation of these occurrences.
