During the next few years several specialists studied the cores, and their reports are published as consecutive parts of this bulletin.
\n
Watson H. Monroe, who spent many years studying the Coastal Plain strata in Alabama and Mississippi, conceived and supervised the drilling and planned the later studies. His earlier published report (W. H. Monroe, 1955, Cores of pre-Selma Cretaceous rocks in the outcrop area in western Alabama: Gulf Coast Geol. Societies Trans., v. 5, p. 11-37) contains a brief description of the stratigraphy, together with logs and other information regarding the core holes, and he has provided the introductory chapter to this bulletin. Richard E. Bergenback studied the petrology of the cores, which included finding the distribution of grain sizes, determining the mineralogy of the grains and the matrix of the sediments, and having X-Ray identifications made of the clay minerals. Norman F. Sohl studied the mollusks and other large fossils obtained from the cores and compared them with other faunal suites collected in Alaban1a and Texas. Esther R. Applin studied the sparse microfauna, comparing it with faunas obtained from deep wells downdip in Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi and with outcrop samples fron1 Texas, and has described a new species of Foraminifera. Estella B. Leopold and Helen M. Pakiser obtained a large pollen and spore assemblage by digesting carbonaceous layers of some of the cores in acid; this flora includes much new material, which is not described here.
\n
The Bergenback, Sohl, and Applin reports discuss the probable environment in which the sediments accumulated. Louis C. It is a shallow-water derivative of the Pleistocene Lake Saginaw. Sixty-one bottom samples were collected on a semigrid pattern and analyzed physically. Findings were treated statistically. Sediments range in size from large pebbles to clay. Medium- to fine-grained clear quartz sand is common to all parts of the bay. Currents and wave action are primarily responsible for both median diameter and sorting distribution patterns. Only a very general correlation can be established between depth and median diameter. Heavy minerals occur in abundance locally and show an affinity to shallow-water areas subject to prevailing currents. Shape also locally determines heavy mineral concentrations. Only general conclusions can be established from roundness and sphericity and acid-soluble content. Increased organic content is correlative with quiet water environments. The shallow-water, heterogeneous nature of Saginaw Bay is not conducive to the recognition of sedimentary criteria suitable for correlations in other than a local environment.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Sedimentary Petrology","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"SEPM Society for Sedimentary Geology","publisherLocation":"Tulsa, OK","doi":"10.1306/74D71000-2B21-11D7-8648000102C1865D","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Wood, L.E., 1964, Bottom sediments of Saginaw Bay, Michigan: Journal of Sedimentary Petrology, v. 34, no. 1, p. 173-184, https://doi.org/10.1306/74D71000-2B21-11D7-8648000102C1865D.","productDescription":"12 p.","startPage":"173","endPage":"184","numberOfPages":"12","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131764,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":267262,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1306/74D71000-2B21-11D7-8648000102C1865D"}],"volume":"34","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a0ce4b07f02db5fcdf1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wood, Leonard E.","contributorId":73157,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wood","given":"Leonard","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308612,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The average total iron content of 2,200 samples from the literature and from unpublished mining company analyses is 26.7 percent Fe. The average Fe content for 16 iron formations in the United States and Canada ranges from 24.5 to 34.1 percent. Low contents of A1203, Ti02, P2O5, and CaO characterize the Precambrian iron formations compared to the relatively large amounts of these constituents in the post-Precambrian iron-bearing sediments. The chemical data emphasize that whereas iron, manganese, and silica were transported and deposited together in the cherty iron formations of the Precambrian, these same elements were chemically differentiated in younger geological time in large but separate deposits of iron and silica. Isotopic age determinations indicate that cherty iron formations were deposited during a long interval of geologic time from approximately 1,700 to 3,000 million years ago. A model is proposed to explain the origin of the iron formations of the Lake Superior type based on the absence or marked deficiency of free oxygen in the atmosphere prior to the Late Precambrian. Lateritic weathering under these conditions permitted the transport of iron and manganese together with silica. The weathered mantle effectively retained aluminum, titanium, phosphorus, and colloidal clay. Graphitic material of biogenic origin is closely associated with the Precambrian iron formations. Although it is uncertain whether iron was precipitated directly through biologic processes, the removal of C02 and the liberation of oxygen to the sea water through photosynthesis of primitive plants undoubtedly influenced the energy relationships among the iron minerals. As a result of the variable conditions the iron formations commonly are characterized by nonequilibrium mineral assemblages. In Late Precambrian time a critical level of free oxygen in the atmosphere was attained permitting a marked acceleration in plant growth and in accretion of oxygen. This stage in the development of an oxygenated atmosphere was reached at least 1,200 million years ago and effectively curtailed the development of cherty iron formations of the Lake Superior type.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Economic Geologists","doi":"10.2113/gsecongeo.59.6.1025","usgsCitation":"Lepp, H., and Goldich, S., 1964, Origin of precambrian iron formations: Economic Geology, v. 59, no. 6, p. 1025-1060, https://doi.org/10.2113/gsecongeo.59.6.1025.","productDescription":"36 p.","startPage":"1025","endPage":"1060","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":386141,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"59","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"1964-09-01","publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lepp, H.","contributorId":259204,"corporation":false,"usgs":false,"family":"Lepp","given":"H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":816811,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Goldich, S. Precipitation on most of the area ranges from about 20 to 23 inches per year, and the average annual precipitation for the entire area was assumed to be 22 inches, of which approximately 65 percent is lost by evapotranspiration. The geologic formations underlying the area are the Blackhawk and Price River Formations of Cretaceous age, the North Horn Formation of Cretaceous and Tertiary age, the Flagstaff Limestone and Colton Formation of tertiary age, and unconsolidated deposits of probable Quaternary age.

Some ground water issues from springs and seeps and is used by stock and the cities of Price and Helper. The annual discharge from the springs and seeps in the area averages about 3,000 acre-feet. Two deep wells supply about 400 acre-feet per year for use at a steam-generating plant. The aquifers penetrated by the wells are in the Flagstaff Limestone and the North Horn formation, the deepest aquifer being about 1,500 feet below the land surface. Most of the ground water in the area is suitable for municipal and industrial use.

The surface discharge from the area is approximately 6,000 acre-feet per year. By means of a water budget, it is calculated that approximately 4,000 acre-feet per year leaves the area by subsurface flow. Further development of ground water on a large scale can be accomplished only by the use of wells. It is possible, however, that part of any newly developed supply from wells may be drawn from existing spring discharge or streamflow.
","language":"English","publisher":"Utah Geological and Mineralogical Survey","publisherLocation":"Salt Lake City, UT","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the State Engineer of Utah and the Price River Water Improvement District","usgsCitation":"Cordova, R.M., 1963, Hydrogeologic reconnaissance of part of the headwaters area of the Price River, Utah: Utah Geological and Mineralogical Survey Water-Resources Bulletin 4, 26 p.","productDescription":"26 p.","numberOfPages":"28","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":333196,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":333192,"rank":1,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://ugspub.nr.utah.gov/publications/water_resources_bulletins/WRB-4.pdf"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Carbon County, Utah County","otherGeospatial":"Price River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -111.13700866699219,\n              39.761047087593965\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.13700866699219,\n              39.87127666240552\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.98526000976562,\n              39.87127666240552\n            ],\n            [\n              -110.98526000976562,\n              39.761047087593965\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.13700866699219,\n              39.761047087593965\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5879f5ade4b0847d353f44d8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cordova, Robert M.","contributorId":178302,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cordova","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"M.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":658427,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
