To obtain a supply of softer water, wells have been drilled into the Dakota Sandstone and the Cheyenne Sandstone Member of the Purgatoire Formation, both Early Cretaceous in age. These aquifers underlie most of ,the area at depths from 0 to 2,000 feet and have a general regional dip northward into the Denver Basin. More than 50 wells have been drilled into the aquifers in this area to obtain water for stock, domestic, and industrial purposes and for public supply. The aquifers are recharged in areas where they crop out or are overlain by sand, principally to the south and west of Otero County. Because water in the aquifers is generally under pressure, it rises above the top of the aquifer in wells penetrating it; at least 20 wells in the area flow. Yields from wells tapping the aquifers range from 4 to 75 gpm (gallons per minute). Flows as great as 50 gpm have been obtained.\r\n\r\nWater in the aquifers is commonly soft and of good chemical quality. There appears to be little difference in quality of water from the two aquifers. Most residents and drillers know that soft water can be obtained from wells throughout most of the area described in this report, but many are not aware of certain factors related to the development of this water. The suspended-sediment discharge of Black Earth Creek averaged 3,260 tons per year or 71 tons per square mile : the annual yields ranged from 27 to 102 tons per square mile. The annual suspended-sediment yield of Mount Vernon Creek ranged from 48 to 171 tons per square mile and averaged 96 tons per square mile. The maximum daily discharge was 1,120 tons on April 1, 1960, during a storm which produced 67 percent of the suspended load for that water year and exceeded the discharge for the preceding 3 years. The sediment discharge of the Yellowstone River averaged 6,870 tons per year or 236 tons per square riffle. The maximum daily sediment discharge, 3,750 tons on April 1, 1959, occurred during a 14-day period of high flow during which the sediment discharge was 15,480 tons. In 1958 and 1959, Dell Creek had suspended-sediment yields of 4.7 and 26 tons per square mile of drainage area. The suspended sediment transported by Black Earth and Mount Vernon Creeks is about two-thirds clay and one-third silt. For Yellowstone River the particle-size distribution of the suspended sediment ranged from three-fourths clay and one-fourth silt during periods of low sediment discharge to one-third clay and two-thirds silt during high sediment discharges. For Dell Creek nearly all of the suspended sediment is clay, but the bed load is sand. The mean sediment concentration of storm runoff averaged two to three times more in the summer than in the winter. The land surface is one of low relief, and the regional slope is about 10 feet per mile toward the southeast. Surface runoff drains into numerous playa lakes and two intermittent streams: Running Water Draw and the Double Mountain Fork of the Brazos River.</p>\n<p>The Ogallala formation of Tertiary age is the principal water-bearing formation in the county. The Ogallala lies on red beds of Triassic age throughout most of the county and on rocks of Cretaceous age in approximately the southern fifth of the county. The Triassic and underlying Permian rocks are not fresh water bearing in the county. The Cretaceous rocks, on the other hand, are in direct hydraulic connection with the Ogallala, and a few wells tapping them yield large quantities of water from cracks and solution channels in the limestones. The Ogallala formation is overlain by thin deposits of sand, gravel, silt, and clay of Pleistocene and Recent age. These younger rocks are, for the most part, above the water table and, consequently, are not water bearing.</p>\n<p>The water in the Ogallala formation occurs principally as unconfined water in layers and lenses of sand and gravel. The hydraulic properties of the Ogallala were determined by a long-term aquifer test at Plainview, where coefficients of transmissibility ranging from 24,000 to 38,000 gpd per foot were measured. The coefficient of storage was determined to be about 0.14.</p>\n<p>The aquifer is recharged from precipitation in Hale County and in the southern High Plains northwest of the county. The water moves generally southeastward at about 2 inches a day.</p>\n<p>Ground water in Hale County is used principally for irrigation. In 1955 more than 3,700 wells were used to irrigate 470,000 acres; about 560,000 acre-feet of water was pumped. About 5,000 acre-feet was pumped for other purposes, including municipal, industrial, stock, and domestic uses.</p>\n<p>The water in the Ogallala formation in Hale County is suitable chemically for irrigation and most other uses; however, it should be softened for more satisfactory domestic use. The high silica content indicates that the water may be unsuitable for use in boilers. The fluoride content is excessive.</p>\n<p>It is estimated that in 1955 about 39 million acre-feet of water was in storage in the Ogallala formation in Hale County; however, only about 16 million is&nbsp;theoretically available to wells, and a somewhat smaller amount is practically available. About 3 million acre-feet was removed from storage during 1938-55. Rocks exposed in the county are principally Cretaceous and Quaternary sedimentary units, which are assigned to the Trinity, Fredericksburg, and Washita groups in the Comanche series; the Eagle Ford shale, Austin chalk, Taylor marl, and Navarro group in the Gulf series: and the Leona formation and equivalent rocks in the Pleistocene series. Recent alluvium and colluvium locally overlie the older rocks.</p>\n<p>In addition to the Edwards limestone in the Fredericksburg group, waterbearing rock units in Hays County include the Pearsall formation (Travis Peak of outcrop areas) and the Glen Rose limestone in the Trinity group, the Austin chalk and Taylor marl, and the Quaternary rocks.</p>\n<p>The surface slope and regional dip are toward the southeast. Several normal strike faults have displaced the Cretaceous rocks downward to the southeast, the aggregate displacement being about 1,700 feet within the county. The boundaries of the Edwards limestone ground-water reservoir are formed by major faults which are the major controls of movement of water.</p>\n<p>Much of the water discharged at San Marcos Springs is derived from influent seepage from streams and infiltration from precipitation in recharge areas southwest of Hays County. The average underground inflow from Comal County through the Edwards limestone reservoir is estimated as 70,000 acre-feet per year for the period 1934-47. The discharge of San Marcos Springs, averaging about 55 million gallons a day during 1955, greatly exceeds local ground-water recharge within Hays County.</p>\n<p>Depth to water, direction of movement of water, subsurface location of aquifers, and quality of water in Hays County have been determined from records of 519 wells and springs, drillers' logs of 49 wells, periodic water-level measurements in about 70 wells, and chemical analyses of water samples from 238 wells and springs.</p>\n<p>Ground water from wells in the Pearsall formation generally contains less than 500 parts per million of dissolved solids. Water from the Glen Rose limestone in some places contains more than 500 parts per million of sulfate and&nbsp;more than 1,000 parts per million of dissolved solids; locally it is high in nitrate also. Except in the southeastern part of the county, water from the Edwards limestone is commonly very hard but is otherwise of good quality for most uses. Analyses of two water samples from the Austin chalk indicate a high content of bicarbonate. Water from the Taylor marl and from Quaternary sediments generally is hard, and locally it contains excessive nitrate. Most wells in Hays County are used for domestic and stock supplies.
