They are presented to show the similarity and dissimilarity of curves even in the same State and to provide background information for studies of the statistical properties of low-flow frequency curves and for studies of the relation between hydrologic environment and low flow. The results are presented as greatly reduced graphs to facilitate comparison and are summarized in tables from which expanded graphs can be plotted.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Contributions to the hydrology of the United States, 1962","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Reconnaissance in the canyon indicated that the geologic influences on the hydrology may be localized; water may be leaking through fault and fracture zones or joints in sandstone and through solution openings in limestone of the Oquirrh formation of Pennsylvanian and Permian age. Surficial deposits of Quaternary age serve as the main storage material for ground water in the canyon and transmit water from the upper canyon to springs and drains at the canyon mouth. The upper canyon is a more important storage area than the lower canyon because the surficial deposits are thicker, and any zones of leakage in the underlying bedrock of the upper canyon probably would result in greater leakage than would similar outlets in the lower canyon.</p><p>The total annual discharge from Middle Canyon, per unit of precipitation, decreased between 1910 and 1939. Similar decreases occurred in Parleys Canyon in the nearby Wasatch Range and in other drainage basins in Utah, and it is likely that most of the decrease in discharge from Middle Canyon and other canyons in Utah is due to a change in climate.</p><p>Chemical analyses of water showed that the high content of sulfate and other constituents in the water from the Utah Metals tunnel, which drains into Middle Canyon, does not have a significant effect on water quality at the canyon mouth. This suggests that much of the tunnel water is lost from the channel by leakage, probably in the upper canyon, during the dry part of the year.</p><p>Comparison of the 150 acre-feet of water per square mile of drainage area discharged by Middle Canyon in 1947 with the 623 and 543 acre-feet per square mile discharged in 1948 by City Creek and Mill Creek Canyons, two comparable drainage basins in the nearby Wasatch Range, also suggests that there is leakage in Middle Canyon.</p><p>A hydrologic budget of the drainage basin results in an estimate that about 3,000 acre-feet of water was unaccounted for in the 1947 water year. This may represent a reasonable estimate of annual leakage from Middle Canyon.</p><p>The future development of Middle Canyon water can best be planned after additional information is obtained on movement of water through the channel fill. Much of this information could be supplied by test drilling in the channel fill. </p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp1619K","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Utah Water and Power Board","usgsCitation":"Gates, J.S., 1963, Hydrogeology of Middle Canyon, Oquirrh Mountains, Tooele County, Utah: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1619, Report: iv, 40 p.; Plate: 16.00 x 15.00 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1619K.","productDescription":"Report: iv, 40 p.; Plate: 16.00 x 15.00 inches","numberOfPages":"45","costCenters":[{"id":610,"text":"Utah Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":26516,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1619k/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26517,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1619k/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":138066,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1619k/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Utah","county":"Tooele County","otherGeospatial":" Middle Canyon, Oquirrh Mountains","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a4ae4b07f02db625119","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gates, Joseph Spencer","contributorId":108089,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gates","given":"Joseph","email":"","middleInitial":"Spencer","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143713,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The county has an area of 927 square miles and had an estimated population of 79,500 in 1957. The major town is Sherman, which has an estimated population of 31,000. The northern two-thirds of the county is drained by tributaries of the Red River; the southern one-third is drained by tributaries of the Trinity River</p>\n<p>Sedimentary rocks exposed at the surface in Grayson County are of Cretaceous and Quaternary age. Sand, clay, marl, and limestone of Cretaceous age, having a maximum thickness of about 3,600 feet, underlie the county; the beds dip regionally to the southeast. Quaternary alluvium mantles part of the surface along the Red River and occurs in scattered patches elsewhere in the county.</p>\n<p>The Trinity group and Woodbine formation of Cretaceous age are the principal water-bearing formations. Other stratigraphic units that yield water to wells are, in order of importance, the Quaternary alluvium and the Pawpaw formation, Eagle Ford shale, and Austin chalk of Cretaceous age.</p>\n<p>Ground water in Grayson County generally moves eastward and southward from areas of recharge to areas of discharge. Average rates of water movement in the Trinity group and Woodbine formation are estimated to be about 1.5 and 15 feet per year, respectively. The chief source of recharge to these aquifers is precipitation on the outcrop, although Lake Texoma contributed some recharge to the Trinity where it crops out in the lake. Ground water discharges naturally by evapotranspiration, by vertical leakage, through springs, artificially through wells, and by underflow out of the county to the southeast.</p>\n<p>The withdrawal of ground water in Grayson County in 1957 was about 5 mgd. Of this amount, about 61 percent came from the Woodbine formation, about 36 percent from the Trinity group, and about 3 percent from the other water-bearing formations. About 65 percent of the ground water pumped in Grayson County is withdrawn in the Sherman area.</p>\n<p>Increased withdrawal of water since World War II has resulted in a rapid decline of the water levels in parts of Grayson County. The maximum decline in the Trinity group at Sherman from 1945 to 1958 was 113 feet, or about 8 feet per year. During the same period, water levels in the Woodbine formation at Sherman declined as much as 156 feet, an average of 12 feet per year. Total declines since the early part of the 20th century were at least 180 feet in the Trinity group and about 240 feet in the Woodbine formation. Water levels in the area of outcrop of the principal aquifers, fluctuating chiefly in response to rainfall or changes in the natural rate of recharge, showed no appreciable decline from 1957 to 1959.</p>\n<p>Coefficients of transmissibility, determined from pumping tests in Grayson County, averaged 2,800 gpd per ft for the Trinity group and 3,200 gpd per ft for the Woodbine formation.</p>\n<p>Kesults of chemical analyses of water samples indicate that the ground water in Grayson County is suitable for most purposes. The Trinity group generally yields soft water that has a high sodium bicarbonate content and is of questionable quality for irrigation. The water from the Woodbine formation ranges more widely in chemical composition than the water from the Trinity. It generally is soft but has a high iron content; it is usually suitable for irrigation in the outcrop area but unsuitable in the downdip area. Water from the other water-bearing formation, though generally hard, is suitable for most purposes, judging from the few analyses available.</p>\n<p>The ground-water resources of Grayson County have been only partly developed. The volume of fresh water in transient storage in the Trinity group and Woodbine formation is estimated to be about 60 and 25 million acre-feet, respectively. Most of this water is not practicably recoverable because of the depth at which it occurs, but relatively high artesian heads and large available drawdowns in much of the county are favorable to future development within economic limits of pumping lift. In the Sherman area, however, concentrated pumping has caused large declines in the water levels, resulting in some dewatering of the Woodbine. Because of the large margin of 'safety before dewatering of the Trinity group begins, the Trinity is the most favorable source of additional ground water for Sherman. However, the higher lifting costs should be considered.</p>\n<p>Large to moderate amounts of additional ground water can be obtained from the Trinity group and Woodbine formation in most presently undeveloped areas in the county. Water suitable for irrigation is available in moderate to large amounts from the Woodbine formation in places on its outcrop. A limiting factor to any large ground-water development, however, is the extent and thickness of saturated fresh-water sand available in the area. The thickness of saturated fresh-water sand in the Trinity decreases northward; the thickness of the sand in the Woodbine is more erratic and has little definite pattern.</p>\n<p>Moderate to large supplies of water may be available from the alluvium near the Red River, but more information is needed before definite conclusions can be reached.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1646","isbn":"pbk","usgsCitation":"Baker, E., 1963, Ground-water geology of Grayson County, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1646, Report: v, 61 p.; 6 Plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1646.","productDescription":"Report: v, 61 p.; 6 Plates","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":25516,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1646/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25517,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1646/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":137044,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1646/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25511,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1646/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":109998,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_24841.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"24841"},{"id":25512,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1646/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25513,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1646/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25514,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1646/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25515,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1646/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aaae4b07f02db668e7c","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Baker, E.T.","contributorId":11584,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Baker","given":"E.T.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":142944,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

They constitute an area of about 435 square miles that includes parts of both the Cascade Range and Coast Range physiographic provinces.\r\n\r\nA sequence of lower Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks with a maximum \r\nthickness of about 20,000 feet is exposed in the area. The oldest part of this \r\nsequence is the Umpqua formation of early Eocene age consisting of a lower \r\nmember of vesicular and amygdaloidal olivine basalt flows, a middle member \r\nof water-laid vitric and lapilli crystal tuff, and an upper member of interbedded fissile siltstone and basaltic sandstone which contains a 300-foot tongue of massive to thick-bedded basaltic sandstone near its top. These rocks are predominantly of marine origin, although the general absence of pillow structures which are common in basaltic lavas of equivalent age elsewhere in the Coast Ranges suggests that some of the flows were poured out subaerially. The overlying tuff member, however, contains Foraminifera and in places has a \r\nlime content slightly in excess of 10 percent. Mollusca and Foraminifera indicate that the Umpqua formation is of early Eocene age and is a correlative of the Capay formation of California.\r\n\r\nThe Tyee formation of middle Eocene age overlies the Umpqua formation and consists of more than 5,000 feet of rhythmically deposited sandstone and \r\nsiltstone in beds 2 to 30 feet thick. The basal part of each bed consists of \r\nmedium- to coarse-grained sandstone that grades upward into fine-grained sand- \r\nstone and siltstone. The principal constituents of the sandstone are quartz, \r\npartly a1tered feldspar, mica, clay, and fragments of basalt, fine-grained argillaceous rocks, and mica schist. Other detrital minerals include epidote, garnet, blue-green hornblende, tourmaline, and zoisite. The depositional environment of the Tyee formation is poorly known, although the rhythmic-graded bedding suggests turbidity currents.\r\n\r\nAbout 500 feet of sandstone and siltstone assigned to the Spencer formation \r\nof late Eocene age unconformably overlies the Tyee formation. The Spencer \r\nformation, better exposed in the east-central part of the Coast Ranges, contains marine fossils but also has thin impure coal beds, indicative of strand-line accumulation. The sandstone in the Spencer formation is very similar to that in the Tyee formation, from which it was probably derived.\r\n\r\nThe Fisher formation contains about 5,500 feet of nonmarine pyroclastic and \r\nvolcanic rocks that are related to the volcanic rock sequences of the western Cascade Range. The formation is characterized by a wide variety of rock types, \r\nincluding conglomerate, tuffaceous sandstone and siltstone, vitric and crystal \r\ntuff, waterlaid and mudflow breccia, and andesitic lava flows. These rocks gen- \r\nerally occur in lenticular beds that have little stratigraphic significance. The rocks apparently accumulated on a plain slightly above sea level that was subjected alternately to fiooding by running water and to desiccation. Fossil leaves from the lowermost part of the Fisher formation are of late Eocene age; the upper part of the formation is of early, and possibly niiddle, Oligocene age.\r\n\r\nA few exposures of olivine basalt were mapped in the extreme northern part \r\nof the Anlauf quadrangle. The flows, more extensively exposed to the north, \r\noverlie the Fisher formation, and, therefore, are tentatively considered to be \r\npost-Oligocene in age.\r\n\r\nAll these stratigraphic units, but principally the Fisher formation, are cut by \r\ndikes, sills, and stocklike bodies of 'porphyritic basalt, diabase, and norite. To obtain a supply of softer water, wells have been drilled into the Dakota Sandstone and the Cheyenne Sandstone Member of the Purgatoire Formation, both Early Cretaceous in age. These aquifers underlie most of ,the area at depths from 0 to 2,000 feet and have a general regional dip northward into the Denver Basin. More than 50 wells have been drilled into the aquifers in this area to obtain water for stock, domestic, and industrial purposes and for public supply. The aquifers are recharged in areas where they crop out or are overlain by sand, principally to the south and west of Otero County. Because water in the aquifers is generally under pressure, it rises above the top of the aquifer in wells penetrating it; at least 20 wells in the area flow. Yields from wells tapping the aquifers range from 4 to 75 gpm (gallons per minute). Flows as great as 50 gpm have been obtained.\r\n\r\nWater in the aquifers is commonly soft and of good chemical quality. There appears to be little difference in quality of water from the two aquifers. Most residents and drillers know that soft water can be obtained from wells throughout most of the area described in this report, but many are not aware of certain factors related to the development of this water. This report should be of value in further developing the sources of soft water by showing: (a) The approximate depth of a well needed to tap these supplies, (b) the range in yields that may be expected, (c) the range in chemical quality that may be expected, (d) the depth to which water will rise in wells, and (e) information on the factors affecting the durability of the supply.","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Contributions to the hydrology of the United States, 1962","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1669P","usgsCitation":"Weist, W., 1963, Water in the Dakota and Purgatoire Formations in Otero County and the southern part of Crowley County, Colorado: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1669, iii, 17 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1669P.","productDescription":"iii, 17 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138392,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1669p/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":29583,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1669p/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5fa133","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Weist, William G.","contributorId":21526,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Weist","given":"William G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":145984,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Since 1956, Mexico has been the world's largest producer and exporter of this commodity. From 1956 through 1959 Maltice imported about 90 percent of the fluorspar production to the United States; these exports seemed about 330,000 tons a year. Districts that yielded about 95 percent of the Mexican fluorspar production in 1959 were among those visited in the spring of 1960. Brief visits Imre made to 36 fluorspar mines in 9 states of Mexico. Measured, indicated, and inferred reserves in the fluorspar districts investigated total about 15 million tons of ore averaging about 65 percent CaF<sub>2</sub>. These reserves and potential future sources indicate a long-continued production of fluorspar, adequate to meet the domestic seeds and to supply other North American requirements for many years.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr63124","usgsCitation":"Van Alstine, R.E., Estrada, S., and Garza, E.D., 1963, Investigations of the principal fluorspar districts of Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 63-124, vii, 98 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr63124.","productDescription":"vii, 98 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":149726,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1963/0124/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":490195,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1963/0124/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"Mexico","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -119.15867425849052,\n              32.972789638932724\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.15867425849052,\n              14.199399751691615\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.28287340531739,\n              14.199399751691615\n            ],\n            [\n              -86.28287340531739,\n              32.972789638932724\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.15867425849052,\n              32.972789638932724\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4784e4b07f02db483c51","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Van Alstine, Ralph Erskine","contributorId":12472,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Van Alstine","given":"Ralph","email":"","middleInitial":"Erskine","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172708,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Estrada, Samuel","contributorId":67109,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Estrada","given":"Samuel","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172709,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Garza, Ernesto de la","contributorId":71567,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Garza","given":"Ernesto","email":"","middleInitial":"de la","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172710,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
