Most installations consist of a vertically mounted metal pipe, a wooden rod, an intake device, and a small amount of granulated cork. These gages are placed where elevations of flood crests are desired. Water rising and then falling in the gage leaves a high-water mark of granulated cork on the wooden rod. The elevation of this mark can be determined at a date subsequent to the date of the crest.</p><p>It has been found that the high-water mark left on the rod may not represent the true elevation of the flood crest in the stream at the gage site. The difference between the true elevation of the crest at the gage and the recorded elevation will be designated drawdown if the recorded elevation is less than the true elevation, or pileup if the recorded elevation is greater than the true elevation. Tests of drawdown and pileup effects have been made in the past by Survey personnel and others. (See p. 8.) These investigations have sometimes brought forth conflicting results, probably due to the varied conditions under which the gages were tested.</p><p>The purpose of this investigation was (1) to determine the pileup and drawdown characteristics of the intakes now being used by the Survey and (2) to design a better intake if existing models were found unsuitable. It was further prescribed that any new design that might result should be easily fabricated from standard pipe fittings, and should be unaffected by pileup or drawdown in excess of 0.1 foot for velocities up to about 8 feet per second.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr63147","usgsCitation":"Carter, J.R., and Gamble, C.R., 1963, Tests of crest-stage gage intakes: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 63-147, 10 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr63147.","productDescription":"10 p.","numberOfPages":"10","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":499023,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1963/0147/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":184244,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1963/0147/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad7e4b07f02db6845d0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Carter, Jack R.","contributorId":71632,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Carter","given":"Jack","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":257644,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Gamble, Charles R.","contributorId":6822,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Gamble","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":257643,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Water samples collected at Harrisburg near the west bank of the Susquehanna River and those of western tributaries that drain limestone terranes are similar in chemical quality. The water is alkaline and contains calcium, magnesium, and bicarbonate-ion concentrations typical of water drained from limestone. The chemical quality of water samples collected in the center of the river resembles the quality of the West Branch Susquehanna River, which has a dissolved-solids content of about 200 parts per million, and a sulfate-ion concentration that generally exceeds the bicarbonate-ion concentration. Samples collected near the east or Harrisburg bank show the effect of anthracite coalmine drainage from the river's eastern tributaries. The pH of these samples ranges from 5.7 to 7.5, and sulfate is the predominate ion. \r\n\r\nThe dissolved-solids content of the river at the Harrisburg cross-section stations is inversely proportional to the streamflow. During periods of low riverflow, the dissolved-solids content approaches a maximum; during periods of high flow, the content is low. \r\n\r\nThe chemical composition of the river at the Harrisburg cross section indicates that water from the principal tributaries above Harrisburg does not mix sufficiently to lose its chemical-quality identity before reaching Harrisburg irrespective of the long distance involved, the many islands and bridge piers, and the rough streambed. This lack of lateral mixing is probably due to the small depth-width ratio and the extreme width of the river.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/wsp1779B","usgsCitation":"Anderson, P.W., 1963, Variations in the chemical character of the Susquehanna River at Harrisburg, Pennsylvania: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1779, iii, 17 p. :illus., map ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1779B.","productDescription":"iii, 17 p. :illus., map ;24 cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":25447,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1779b/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":136964,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1779b/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48e3e4b07f02db54f199","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Anderson, Peter W.","contributorId":10400,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Anderson","given":"Peter","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":142902,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

During the period 1949 through 1955 pumpage from the two aquifers averaged about 30 mgd (million gallons per day). The pumpage was approximately in balance with the normal net recharge to the area but was only about 8 percent of the estimated potential supply of ground water, including induced infiltration from the river. In the Louisville area, ground water is used chiefly for air conditioning and for industrial cooling. In the part of the area southwest of the city, ground water is used also for public supply. \r\n\r\nHigh ground-water levels in 1937 resulted from the greatest flood of record. Subsequently, water levels generally declined in the entire Louisville area. In downtown Louisville, where ground water is used for air conditioning, the water level fluctuates seasonally in response to variations in the rate of pumping. In the heavily pumped industrial areas, where ground water is used for cooling, water-level fluctuations correlate with changes in rates of pumping caused by variations in production schedules. Levels were lowest during the years of World War II. During the period 1952-55, relatively low levels throughout the area reflected the effects of less than normal rainfall, summer drought, and sustained pumping. \r\n\r\nGround water in the Louisville area is very hard and generally of the calcium bicarbonate or calcium sulfate type. It is high in iron and sulfate content but is moderately low in chloride content. In water of the sand and gravel aquifer, the concentration of sulfate has increased gradually during the period 1949-54.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1579","usgsCitation":"Bell, E., Kellogg, R.W., and Kulp, W.K., 1963, Progress report on the ground-water resources of the Louisville area, Kentucky, 1949-55: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1579, iv, 47 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm. + separate portfolio with plates., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1579.","productDescription":"iv, 47 p. :ill., maps ;24 cm. + separate portfolio with plates.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137977,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25589,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-01.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25590,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-02.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25591,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-03.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25592,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25593,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-05.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25594,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-06.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25595,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-07.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25596,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-08.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25597,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-09.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25598,"rank":409,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25599,"rank":410,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25600,"rank":411,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25601,"rank":412,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-13.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25602,"rank":413,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-14.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25603,"rank":414,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/plate-15.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25604,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1579/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65dbab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bell, Edwin A.","contributorId":96660,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bell","given":"Edwin A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143018,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kellogg, Robert W.","contributorId":61793,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kellogg","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143017,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Kulp, Willis K.","contributorId":8076,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kulp","given":"Willis","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143016,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Dak., about midway between Edgemont, S. Dak., and Newcastle, Wyo. All the rocks that crop out within the quadrangle are of sedimentary origin and range in age from Pennsylvanian to Early Cretaceous.\r\n\r\nThe Minnesota Formation of Pennsylvania and Permian age, which is about 1,000 feet thick, was studied in outcrop and from two diamond-drill cores. In the subsurface the upper part of the formation consists of gray sandstone, very fine grained dolomite, and anhydrite. The anhydrite has been leached from the formation near the outcrop, perhaps in the early part of the Cenozoic Era, and the resulting subsidence has produced collapse breccias in the Minnelusa and milder deformation in the overlying units. In the collapse breccias the rocks have been oxidized and are red, whereas in the subsurface they are gray. The anhydrite cement of the subsurface sandstone has been replaced by calcite, and the dolomite beds have been partially converted to limestone.\r\n\r\nThe Opeche Formation of Permian age consists of 75 to 115 feet of red siltstone and shale and two thin gypsum beds. The Minnekahta Limestone of Permian age is about 40 feet thick.\r\n\r\nThe Spearfish Formation of Permian and Triassic age is about 550 feet thick and consists of red siltstone red sandstone, dolomite, and gypsum. The dolomite and gypsum beds are restricted to the lower half of the formation. In the northeast corner of the quadrangle the gypsum beds have been dissolved by ground water. The Sundance Formation of Late Jurassic age is divided into five members that have a total thickness of about 360 feet. The Morrison Formation of Late Jurassic age ranges in thickness from 60 to 120 feet. It consists of blocky weathering noncarbonaceous mudstone and subordinate beds of limestone and sandstone.\r\n\r\nThe Inyan Kara Group of Early Cretaceous age has been subdivided into the Lakota Formation and the Fall River Formation. The Lakota Formation consists of 200 to 300 feet of carbonaceous siltstone blocky-weathering claystone, and fine-grained to conglomeratic sandstone. These rocks were deposited in stream channels, flood plains, and ponds. The Fall River Formation is about 110 to 130 feet thick. Along the northeast side of the outcrop the formation consists of fine- to medium-grained sandstone, which forms an elongate body at least 1-1/2 miles wide and more than 25 miles long. To the southwest the formation consists of thinly stratified interbedded sandstone, carbonaceous siltstone, and varicolored mudstone. The Skull Creek and Mowry Shales of Early Cretaceous age consist of black fissile shale. The Mowry contains abundant fish scales and weathers to a silver gray.\r\n\r\nAlluvium fills the bottom of many intermittent streams, and small gravel-covered terraces mark the former high levels of these streams. Gravel, which caps hills at altitudes of 4,460 to 4,620 feet, is believed to have been deposited by a Pleistocene stream that drained southeastward toward the town of Minnekahta. Many landslides are present along the northward- and eastward-facing scarp of the Inyan Kara hogback.\r\n\r\nThe Dewey fault, trending N. 75 deg E., crosses the quadrangle. It is probably a vertical dip-slip fault, and has an apparent displacement of 250 to 440 feet. Two northwest-trending anticlines are in the quadrangle - one extends from the Edgemont NE quadrangle to near the center of the Jewel Cave SW quadrangle, and the other is limited to the center of the Jewel Cave SW quadrangle.\r\n\r\nCollapse structures, which were produced by the solution of anhydrite, are (a) breccias in the Minnelusa Formation, (b) limestone-dolomite breccias in the Spearfish Formation, (c) undulations and normal faults in the formations overlying the Minnelusa and (d) breccia pipes that extend upward from the Minnelusa to at least as high as the Lakota Formation. The leaching probably occurred in early Cenozoic time.\r\n\r\nMinor deformationa","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/b1063G","collaboration":"Prepared on behalf of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission","usgsCitation":"Braddock, W.A., 1963, Geology of the Jewel Cave SW Quadrangle, Custer County, South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1063, 52 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/b1063G.","productDescription":"52 p.","startPage":"217","endPage":"268","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":109263,"rank":699,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_20699.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"20699"},{"id":96110,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1063g/plate-21.pdf","size":"252","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":96109,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1063g/plate-20.pdf","size":"7111","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":96111,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1063g/plate-22.pdf","size":"401","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":96108,"rank":299,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1063g/report.pdf","size":"5115","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":166670,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1063g/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b23e4b07f02db6ae2a7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Braddock, William A.","contributorId":61010,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Braddock","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":211990,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

One principal purpose of the study was to estimate the ground-water outflow from the Bunker Hill basin to the Rialto-Colton basin across the San Jacinto fault, which, except locally, forms a nearly impermeable boundary between the two basins. In addition, the report deals qualitatively with the geology, the fault barriers that divide the area into several ground-water basins, the physical nature and degree of imperviousness of the barriers, the occurrence and movement of ground water and fluctuations of water level in the basins, and the chemical quality of surface and ground waters in the San Bernardino area. The report includes a geologic map and sections, water-level-contour maps and profiles, and hydrographs of selected well. The Santa Ana River, the principal stream, flows generally westward across the area. Channels of the river and its tributaries overlie a large irregular structural depression filled with alluvial deposits ranging in age from late Tertiary to Recent and forming a valley bounded on the north by the San Gabriel Mountains, on the east by the San Bernardino Mountains, and on the south by an irregular group of hills. Large alluvial fans underlie most of the area, but its landforms also include alluvial benches and terraces near the mountains, stream channels, and elongate hills, ridges, and scarps along the trace of the San Jacinto fault, which strikes northwestward across the valley about in the center of the area. This fault and others divide the area into ground-water basins, which include the Bunker Hill, Rialto-Colton, upper and lower Lytle and Chino basins. The water-bearing deposits include the following units: the younger alluvium. of Recent age, which occupies principally the backfilled channels beneath the Santa Ana River and its tributaries and through which ground water moves from Bunker Hill basin to Rialto-Colton basin; the older alluvium, of Pleistocene age, which is the principal water-bearing unit of the area and yields water to more than a thousand wells; and continental deposits of Tertiary to Quaternary age, which crop out along the southern margin of the area and locally along the San Gabriel Mountains on the north. The younger alluvium attains a maximum thickness of about 125 feet beneath the Santa Ana River south of San Bernardino. Locally in the Bunker Hill basin it is composed of two members, an upper member of relatively impermeable clay and a lower member of highly permeable material in which water is confined by the upper member. The older alluvium locally has a known thickness greater than 700 feet; elsewhere in the San Bernardino Valley it may exceed 1,400 feet. Locally, where ground water is confined in Bunker Hill basin, the older alluvium is divided into three permeable water-bearing zones separated from each other and from the younger alluvium above by less permeable zones. In parts of Chino and Rialto-Colton basins the alluvium consists of a coarse-grained facies along a former course of a major stream that is interfingered with and overlain by relatively fine-grained deposits. The permeability of the younger alluvium in the area beneath the Santa Ana River downstream from the San Jacinto fault was determined from tests to be about 2,700 gallons per day per square foot. The permeability of the coarse water-yielding materials of the older alluvium several miles downstream was estimated from tests to be about the same magnitude. Rocks that yield practically no water include continental rocks of Tertiary age, which are not exposed in the area but are tapped by wells in Rialto-Colton basin, and crystalline and metamorphic rocks of pre-Tertiary age that form the bedrock of the area.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1419","usgsCitation":"Dutcher, L., and Garrett, A., 1963, Geologic and hydrologic features of the San Bernardino area, California; A measure of infiltration, the infiltration rate, is usually determined in the field by flooding basins or furrows, sprinkling, or measuring water entry from cylinders (infiltrometer rings). Rates determined by ponding in large areas are considered most reliable, but the high cost usually dictates that infiltrometer rings, preferably 2 feet in diameter or larger, be used. \r\n\r\nThe hydrology of subsurface materials is critical in the study of infiltration. The zone controlling the rate of infiltration is usually the least permeable zone. Many other factors affect infiltration rate--the sediment (soil) structure, the condition of the sediment surface, the distribution of soil moisture or soil- moisture tension, the chemical and physical nature of the sediments, the head of applied water, the depth to ground water, the chemical quality and the turbidity of the applied water, the temperature of the water and the sediments, the percentage of entrapped air in the sediments, the atmospheric pressure, the length of time of application of water, the biological activity in the sediments, and the type of equipment or method used. It is concluded that specific values of the infiltration rate for a particular type of sediment are probably nonexistent and that measured rates are primarily for comparative use. \r\n\r\nA standard field-test method for determining infiltration rates by means of single- or double-ring infiltrometers is described and the construction, installation, and operation of the infiltrometers are discussed in detail.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1544F","usgsCitation":"Johnson, A., 1963, A field method for measurement of infiltration: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1544, v. :ill. ;23 cm. ;27 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1544F.","productDescription":"v. :ill. ;23 cm. ;27 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138325,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1544f/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":30188,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1544f/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b25e4b07f02db6aed25","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Johnson, A.I.","contributorId":82676,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Johnson","given":"A.I.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":146424,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
