S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency. Monthly water-level measurements were made in 201 wells, in 9 of which automatic water-level recorders were operated. Earlier measurements, covering the period 1941 through 1955, have been published in U.S. Geological Survey Water-Supply Papers (19)43-1957); those for 1:56 through 1961 have been released locally in duplicated form (Muir and Merritt, 1957; Evenson 1950; Miller, 1959; Muir, Merritt, and Miller, 1960; Merritt, 1961; and Muir, 1962). LaRocque, Jr., and others (1950) contains tabulated descriptions of 2,246 wells in existence in 1942 in the several ground-water basins of the county. The same publication also contains many water-level measurements made prior to 1942 by the city of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District, San Joaquin Power Division of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., Union Sugar Co., Union Oil Co., and other organizations and individuals.

Comprehensive reports on the geology and and ground-water resources of the Santa. Ynez River basin (Upson and Thomasson, 1951, and Wilson, 1959), the south-coast basin (Upson, 1951), the Santa Maria Valley area (Worts, 1951), and the Cuyvma Valley (Upson and Worts, 1951) have been published as Water-Supply Papers 1107, 1467, 1108, 1000, and 1110-B, respectively. A similar report on the San Antonio Creek Valley is in preparation. A report on stream runoff and ground-water storage capacity of the Santa Ynez River Valley (Troxell and Wilson, 1952) was released to the open file in October 1952.

In addition to the water-level measurements made by the Geological Survey in 1962, measurements made by the Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District are included in this report. Not included in this report are miscellaneous measurements made by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in wells along the middle reach of the Santa Ynez River between Cachuma Dam and Rucker Crossing.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr63103","issn":"0094-9140","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency","usgsCitation":"Muir, K.S., 1963, Water levels in observation wells in Santa Barbara County, California, in 1962: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 63-103, 55 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr63103.","productDescription":"55 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":432286,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1963/0103/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":156305,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1963/0103/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Santa Barbara County","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -120.61474653419313,\n 35.107477322182945\n ],\n [\n -120.61474653419313,\n 33.603227658961316\n ],\n [\n -119.21258359397822,\n 33.603227658961316\n ],\n [\n -119.21258359397822,\n 35.107477322182945\n ],\n [\n -120.61474653419313,\n 35.107477322182945\n ]\n ]\n ],\n \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n }\n }\n ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a08e4b07f02db5f9d66","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Muir, K. Radioactive substances may be present in natural water as a result of geochemical processes or the release of radioactive waste and other nuclear debris to the environment. The Geological Survey has developed methods for measuring certain of these .radioactive substances in water. \r\n\r\nRadioactive substances often are present in water samples in microgram quantities or less. Therefore, precautions must be taken to prevent loss of material and to assure that the sample truly represents its source at the time of collection. Addition of acids, complexing agents, or stable isotopes often aids in preventing loss of radioactivity on container walls, on sediment, or on other solid materials in contact with the sample. \r\n\r\nThe disintegration of radioactive atoms is a random process subject to established methods of statistical analysis. Because many water samples contain small amounts of radioactivity, low-level counting techniques must be used. The usual assumption that counting data follow a Gaussian distribution is invalid under these conditions, and statistical analyses must be based on the Poisson distribution. \r\n\r\nThe gross beta activity in water samples is determined from the residue left after evaporation of the sample to dryness. Evaporation is accomplished first in a teflon dish, then the residue is transferred with distilled water to a counting planchet and again is reduced to dryness. The radioactivity on the planchet is measured with an anticoincidence-shielded, low-background, beta counter and is compared with measurements of a strontium-90-yttrium-90 standard prepared and measured in the same manner. Control charts are used to assure consistent operation of the counting instrument.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1696A","usgsCitation":"Barker, F.B., and Robinson, B., 1963, Determination of beta activity in water: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1696, iii, 32 p. :ill. ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1696A.","productDescription":"iii, 32 p. :ill. ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137078,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1696a/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25550,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1696a/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aa8e4b07f02db667865","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Barker, F. The water-supply and public-health problems that have been caused by some cases of ground-water contamination in the State illustrate the necessity of protecting this vital resource.

Manmade and natural contaminants, including many types of chemical and organic matter, have entered many of the numerous aquifers of the State. Aquifers have been contaminated by waste-laden liquids percolating from the surface or from the zone of aeration and by direct injection to the aquifer itself. Industrial and domestic wastes, septic tanks, leaking sewers, flood waters or other poor quality surface waters, mine waters, solids stored or spread at the surface, and even airborne wastes all have been sources of ground-water contamination in Michigan. In addition, naturally occurring saline waters have been induced into other aquifers by overpumping or unrestricted flow from artesian wells, possibly by dewatering operations, and by the deepening of surface stream channels. Vertical migration of saline waters through open holes from formations underlying various important aquifers also has spoiled some of the fresh ground waters in the State. In spite of the contamination that has occurred, however, the total amount of ground water that has been spoiled is only a small part of the total resource. Neither is the contamination so widespread as that of the surface streams of Michigan.

Overall legal authority to control most types of ground-water contamination in the State has been assigned by the Michigan Legislature to the Water Resources Commission, although the Department of Conservation and the Health Department also exercise important water-pollution control functions. The Michigan Supreme Court, in an important case upholding the power of the Water Resources Commission to control pollution of ground water, in effect has introduced the doctrine of reasonable use into the law of the State. Excluding controls administered by the Department of Conservation on activities of the oil and gas industry, however, legal controls have not been used abate intrusion of natural saline waters into fresh-water aquifers in response to pumping and other manmade changes in the hydrologic regimen.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing The average rainfall over the 45,300 square miles in the State is about 42 inches per year. Of this amount, about 50 percent appears in the streams as runoff. The combined mean annual runoff of the Delaware, Ohio, and Susquehanna Rivers, at their farthest downstream measuring points in the State, is in excess of 81,000 cubic feet per second. Variations in the chemical quality of the surface waters in Pennsylvania are caused by areal differences in geology, urban and industrial development, mining, quarrying, land use, and runoff. Waters having the least dissolved solids are found in the glaciated northeastern and northwestern parts of the State; waters having higher values of hardness are found in the limestone terranes in the southeastern and south-central parts. In the anthracite coal fields in the northeast and in the bituminous coal fields in the southwest, many streams receive acid mine drainage, which lowers the alkalinity and increases the sulfate content of the waters. The chemical quality of surface waters in Pennsylvania is discussed in general terms. Most of the county lies in the Pecos Valley; the remainder, in the northeastern part of the county, is part of the Llano Estacado, or the High Plains. Its principal industries are those related to the production and refining of oil, but ranching also is an important occupation. The county has an arid to semiarid climate, an area of about 887 square miles, and a population of about 12,000 in 1957.
\n
The principal fresh-water-bearing formations in Winkler County are the Cenozoic alluvium, which mantles the surface of most of the county, and the Santn Rosa sandstone of Late Triassic age. The alluvium is saturated at a depth ranging from a few feet below the land surface to about 150 feet, and the water is under water-table conditions. The Santa Rosa sandstone is fully saturated throughout most of the county, the water occurring under both unconfined (water-table) and confined (artesian) conditions. The underlying older formations contain water too highly mineralized for most uses, but they are important because water from these underlying beds, which is produced with the oil, is a source of pollution to the fresh-water aquifers. The formations also are a source of water to waterflooding projects for the secondary recovery of oil.
\n
The alluvium is replenished chiefly by precipitation, throughout the county. The sand-dune area in the eastern part is the most favorable area of natural recharge. The Santa Rosa sandstone is recharged through the alluvium where the two formations are in contact.
\n
Infiltration of saline water, which with oil and waste water has been produced from industrial plants, has been taking place through surface earthen pits. About 18 mgd (million gallons per day) of saline water was being produced from the many oil fields throughout the county during August 1957, and almost all this water was placed in surface pits. The Hendrick oil field alone produced about 14.5 mgd during that month, and an estimated 800,000 acre-feet from 1937 to 1957.
\n
About 20 million acre-feet of fresh water is stored in the explored groundwater aquifers of Winkler County, of which an estimated 5 to 7 million acrefeet can be practicably recovered. A daily average of about 8.2 million gallons (9,200 acre-feet per year) of fresh water was used in the county during 1956. Public and industrial use accounted for about 6.8 mgd; irrigation, domestic, and stock uses accounted for 1.4 mgd. Projects engaged in the secondary recovery of oil were the largest consumers, using an average of about 3 mgd of fresh water and about 2.7 mgd of saline water during 1956.
\n
Water wells drilled in the deep trough of Cenozoic alluvium south of Wink may yield 1,000 gpm (gallons per minute) or more. A pumping test of the alluvium in that area indicated a coefficient of transmissibility of about 25,000 gpd (gallons per day) per foot. Wells, other than windmill wells, drawing water from thinner sections of alluvium in the rest of the county yield between 100 and 300 gpm. Most of the wells in the Santa Rosa sandstone yield 30-400 gpm. Two municipal wells at Kermit that tap the Santa Rosa sandstone were tested at 1,200 and 1,875 gpm. The large yield of these wells probably results from the presence of fractures in the structurally deformed aquifer. Pumping tests in the Kermit area indicate that locally a full section of the Santa Rosa sandstone has an average coefficient of transmissibility of about 25,000 gpd per foot and a coefficient of storage of about 0.0003. The transmissibility in two other tested areas is much less.
\n
The chemical quality of the water in the principal aquifers is generally acceptable for industry and for public supply. About two-thirds of the samples collected from fresh-water wells had a dissolved-solids content of less than 1,000 ppm (parts per million) ; however, some samples in a few areas were hard and were high in fluoride and silica. Samples from wells in polluted areas contained dissolved solids ranging from about 1,400 to 71,100 ppm. Two comprehensive analyses of water samples from the Rustler formation showed a dissolved-solids content of 18,400 ppm. and 157,000 ppm. In most of the water produced with the oil in the Hendrick oil field, the content of dissolved solids ranged from about 4,000 to about 10,000 ppm. The water produced with the oil in the rest of the oil fields in Winkler County was mainly brine.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/wsp1582","usgsCitation":"Garza, S., and Wesselman, J.B., 1963, Geology and ground-water resources of Winkler County, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1582, Report: v, 162 p.; 9 Plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1582.","productDescription":"Report: v, 162 p.; 9 Plates","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[{"id":583,"text":"Texas Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":26506,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1582/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26507,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1582/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26508,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1582/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26509,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1582/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26510,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1582/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26511,"rank":405,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1582/plate-6.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26512,"rank":406,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1582/plate-7.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26513,"rank":407,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1582/plate-8.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26514,"rank":408,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1582/plate-9.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":26515,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1582/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":138065,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1582/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":109992,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_24767.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"24767"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adae4b07f02db68581b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Garza, Sergio","contributorId":88713,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Garza","given":"Sergio","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143708,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Wesselman, John B.","contributorId":52154,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wesselman","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143707,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

About 90 percent of the area is forested and the remainder is chiefly farm land.\r\n\r\nThe topography reflects the geologic structure and varied resistance of the bedrock to erosion. Most of the area is on the east limb of the Green Mountain \r\nanticlinorium, which is the principal structural feature of Vermont. The bedrock is predominantly sedimentary and volcanic rock that has been regionally metamorphosed. It was intruded before metamorphism by mafic and ultramafic igneous rocks, and after metamorphism by felsic and mafic igneous rocks. The metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks range in age from Cambrian(?) to Middle Silurian, the intrusive igneous rocks from probably Late Ordovician to probably late Permian. Metamorphism and principal folding in the region occurred in Middle Devonian time.\r\n\r\nThe metamorphosed sedimentary and volcanic rocks make up a section at least \r\n25,000 feet thick and can be divided into nine formations. The Hazens Notch \r\nformation of Cambrian(?) and Early Cambrian age is characterized by carbonaceous schist. It is succeeded in western parts of the area by the Jay Peak formation of Early Cambrian age, which is chiefly a schist that is distinguished by the general absence of carbonaceous zones; in central parts of the area the Hazens Notch formation is followed by the Belvidere Mountain amphibolite, probably the youngest of the formations of Early Cambrian age. The Ottauquechee formation, composed of carbonaceous phyllite and quartzite, and phyllitic graywacke, is of Middle Cambrian age. The Stowe formation of Late Cambrian(?) and Early(?) Ordovician age overlies the Ottauquechee and is predominantly noncarbonaceous schist, though it also contains greenstone and carbonaceous schist and phyllite. The Umbrella Hill formation of Middle Ordovician age is characteristically a conglomerate in which the mineral chloritoid is common. The overlying Moretown formation, also of Middle Ordovician age, contains granulite and slate, also greenstone and amphibolite of the Coburn Hill volcanic member. The Shaw Mountain formation, made up of conglomerate, phyllite, and limestone, is the oldest Silurian unit. The Shaw Mountain formation is succeeded by the Northfield slate of Middle Silurian age.\r\n\r\nThe igneous rocks of the region include various ultramafic plutonic rocks, such \r\nas dunite, peridotite, and serpentinite, probably of Late Ordovician age; sills and nearly concordant dikes of metagabbro of Late Ordovician age; biotite granite plutons or Middle or Late Devonian age, most notably on Eltey Mountain; and hypabyssallamprophyre, probably of late Permian age.\r\n\r\nMetamorphic zoning is shown by the distribution of rocks of the epidote-amphibolite facies and the greenschist facies in and near the Green Mountains, and near Coburn Hill and Eltey Mountain. Metasomatism related to regional metamorphism has produced porphyroblasts and quartz segregations in the sedimentary and volcanic rocks, and steatitization and carbonatization of serpentinite. Contact metamorphism has formed rocks of the epidote-amphibolite facies near granite plutons, and probably calc-silicate rock at the contacts of ultramafic plutons.\r\n\r\nThe axial anticline of the Green Mountain anticlinorium and other anticlines \r\nand synclines to the east are the major longitudinal structural features of the area. These structures are complicated by transverse folds, particularly a syncline in the vicinity of Tillotson Peak. Early minor cross folds that are best developed in the Hazens Notch formation are believed to be genetically related to the transverse folds. The axial planes of the cross folds are folded about the axes of the later longitudinal folds of the Green Mountain anticlinorium. The longitudinal and transverse fold systems probably formed in the same episode of defor","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Contributions to Economic Geology (1960)","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"Geological Survey (U.S.)","doi":"10.3133/b1122B","usgsCitation":"Cady, W.M., Albee, A.L., and Chidester, A., 1963, Bedrock Geology and Asbestos Deposits of the Upper Missisquoi Valley and Vicinity, Vermont: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1122, Report: iv, pages B1-B78; 2 Plates - Plate 1: 36 x 25 inches, Plate 2: 10 x 14 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/b1122B.","productDescription":"Report: iv, pages B1-B78; 2 Plates - Plate 1: 36 x 25 inches, Plate 2: 10 x 14 inches","costCenters":[{"id":595,"text":"U.S. Geological Survey","active":false,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":109361,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_20823.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"20823"},{"id":167327,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1122b/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":61791,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1122b/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":61792,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1122b/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":61793,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1122b/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"62500","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -72.58333333333333,44.65 ], [ -72.58333333333333,45.016666666666666 ], [ -72.25,45.016666666666666 ], [ -72.25,44.65 ], [ -72.58333333333333,44.65 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a6be4b07f02db63db0d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cady, Wallace Martin","contributorId":98307,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cady","given":"Wallace","email":"","middleInitial":"Martin","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":212144,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Albee, Arden Leroy","contributorId":83912,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Albee","given":"Arden","email":"","middleInitial":"Leroy","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":212143,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Chidester, A.H.","contributorId":42940,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Chidester","given":"A.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":212142,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}
