A total of over 60 papers was presented by the Planetary Sciences Section, usually&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">in</span><span>&nbsp;sessions held jointly with other Sections, including Geomagnetism and Aeronomy; Meteorology; and Volcanology, Geochemistry, and Petrology. Among the granitic igneous rocks, the green pyroxenic facies have the least oxidized iron-titanium oxide minerals and a pink potassium-rich microperthitic microcline facies the most oxidized. Granites and syenites may crystallize with either an iron-rich variety of hornblende (or pyroxene) plus ilmenite, or with an iron-magnesium variety of hornblende (or of pyroxene) plus magnetite plus ilmenite, depending on the degree of oxidation. The granite facies of the orthogneisses of the Diana Complex (Precambrian) have a more oxidized mineral assemblage than the syenitic and quartz syenitic facies. The anorthosites and gabbro anorthosites have relatively oxygen-rich oxide minerals. Orthogneisses in the granulite facies have a lower ratio of Fe&nbsp;</span><sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;O&nbsp;</span><sub>3</sub><span>&nbsp;/FeO than similar gneisses in the amphibolite facies. At least part of this lower ratio is due to metamorphism at higher temperatures and pressures. A regional belt of granitic orthogneiss metamorphosed in the amphibolite facies has a magnetite-sphene instead of a magnetite-ilmenite assemblage. Metasomatism of biotite-quartz-plagioclase gneiss to sillimanitic quartz-microcline gneisses is accompanied by decrease in mafic silicates and a series of changes of minerals in intermediate stages such that, in general, biotite yields with increasing degrees of oxidation successively such assemblages as (1) biotite, garnet, magnetite, hemo-ilmenite, and ilmeno-hematite; (2) pale brown mica, sillimanite, magnetite, and ilmeno-hematite; and (3) rutilo-hematite, rutile, and meagre silicates including sillimanite, muscovite, and chlorite. The optical properties (Na light) are:&nbsp;</span><i>α</i><span>&nbsp;=1·585±0·002,&nbsp;</span><i>β</i><span>&nbsp;=1·596±0·002, γ=1·605±0·002, 2&nbsp;</span><i>V<span>&nbsp;</span><sub>α</sub></i><span>&nbsp;=85° (calc.), X≈&nbsp;</span><i>b</i><span>&nbsp;, Z ∧&nbsp;</span><i>c</i><span>&nbsp;=20°±5°. A reversible phase transition between triclinic and monoclinic KFeSi&nbsp;</span><sub>3</sub><span>&nbsp;O&nbsp;</span><sub>8</sub><span>&nbsp;occurs at 704°±6° C at 2000 bars total pressure. It is underlain by unconsolidated sands and clays of Quaternary, Tertiary, and Cretaceous age. The Raritan and Magothy Formations constitute the most important aquifers and yield more than 95 percent of the water pumped by the public water systems in the county. These formations are capable of yielding 1,400 gpm (gallons per minute) or more to large diameter wells. High yielding wells generally can be drilled anywhere in the county, although the formations are deeper toward the Atlantic Ocean. The Cohansey Sand, second most important aquifer, yields up to 800 gpm or more from large diameter wells. This aquifer is present only in the sparsely populated southeastern half of the county. The Wenonah Formation and Mount Laurel Sand are capable of yielding 100 to 200 gpm in certain areas.</p><p>The overall chemical quality of the naturally occurring ground water is good. The water generally meets the U.S. Public Health Service's (1962) suggested limit for dissolved solids; however, in some areas, the water carries objectionable amounts of iron and nitrate in solution and has a low pH. Contamination of ground water by salt-water encroachment or by pollution from industrial activity or organic waste in densely populated areas should be prevented. The quality rather than the quantity of water may be the important factor in future ground-water developments.</p><p>The 21 public water systems in Gloucester County pumped about 1.3 billion gallons of water during 1948 and some 2.7 billion gallons during 1959. This is slightly more than a hundred percent increase in pumpage in 12 year s. The recalculated atomic ratios herein presented show that only three of the thirteen have low (OH+F), and only one has characteristics that may possibly be due to loss of water during determination. None of the analyses exhibit characteristics suggestive of oxidation of iron and loss of H, as in progression towards oxyannite.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">The average recalculated octahedral occupancy is 2.69, not 2.91 as in the previous calculation.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">The differences between atomic ratios calculated on the basis ot determined H<sub>2</sub>O<sup>+</sup><span>&nbsp;</span>and F and those calculated on the basis of the theoretical O<sub>10</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>(OH)<sub>2</sub><span>&nbsp;</span>content are not great enough to change the essential compositional character of these micas as interpreted by Foster (1960). Three types of glaucophane-bearing metamorphic rocks have been distinguished in and around the area of the detailed study. Each is characterized by distinctive textures and mineral assemblages that are interpreted to represent different grades of metamorphism within the glaucophane schist facies.</p><p class=\"chapter-para\">From the combination of small- and large-scale mapping in the area described it is clear that coarsely schistose blocks, tens of feet in diameter, commonly rest directly upon and within less intensely metamorphosed terrain. In the Cazadero area these isolated blocks of coarsely crystalline rocks are concentrated in a band that is roughly concordant with some of the major faulting, and their metamorphic fabric shows no consistent relation to local or regional structures. The radiotracer was injected as a line source. The patterns of dispersion that were observed in these channels were compared with patterns predicted by the theoretical models for one-dimensional flow developed by Taylor and other investigators. Analysis of the relation between time and concentration of the tracer at several sections in each of the six reaches shows that the available theoretical models are not adequate to describe the dispersion patterns actually observed. Dispersion coefficients determined from the test data are from 2 to 30 times greater than those predicted by the theoretical models. These&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">pegmatites</span><span>&nbsp;are representative of a group of zoned, granitic, lithium-bearing&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">pegmatites</span><span>&nbsp;in which&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">spodumene</span><span>&nbsp;is present nearly from wall to wall. The&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">pegmatites</span><span>&nbsp;are discordant, steeply dipping, tabular bodies in the Penobscot quartz-mica schist near the Waldoboro granite. A narrow quartz-tourmaline-muscovite-apatite aureole is commonly developed around each of the&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">pegmatites</span><span>&nbsp;and around inclusions of country rock in the&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">pegmatites</span><span>. The&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">pegmatites</span><span>&nbsp;are zoned, and each may be subdivided into: (1) a narrow quartz-muscovite border zone; (2) a narrow albite-quartz-muscovite wall zone; (3) and an albite-quartz-</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">spodumene</span><span>-perthite core that constitutes most of the&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">pegmatite</span><span>. Cross-cutting, fine-grained, quartz-albite-</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">spodumene</span><span>-muscovite lenses are found within&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">pegmatite</span><span>&nbsp;cores. The bulk mineralogy and variations in the mineralogy from zone to zone of the largest body (Dike 1) were determined by megascopic mineral point-counts. There is a decrease of albite, quartz, and muscovite and an increase of&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">spodumene</span><span>&nbsp;and perthite from the border and wall zones into the core. The alkali contents of Dike 1 and of each of its zones were determined by flame photometer and X-ray fluorescence analyses. The amount of Na20 decreases and the amounts of K&nbsp;</span><sub>2</sub><span>O, Li&nbsp;</span><sub>2</sub><span>0, Rb&nbsp;</span><sub>2</sub><span>0, and CS&nbsp;</span><sub>2</sub><span>O increase from the border and wall zones into the core. Estimated bulk compositions of Dike 1 and of each of its zones were computed. The micrococci are black, and have an average diameter about 0.5 µ. Similar black micrococci (0.4 to 0.7 µ) were found in profusion in the bottom mud of Green Lake, New York. About 80 percent of this mud consists of minute idiomorphic calcite crystals and about 20 percent of these contain enormous numbers of the black micrococci.
