The metacercaria was found in all fishes examined from Opequon River, West Virginia, except Cottus bairdi which was also refractory to experimental infection. Two species of Centrarchidae, four of Cyprinidae, three of Salmonidae, Etheostoma flabellare, Platypoecilus maculatus, and Trichogaster trichopterus were experimentally infected. The development of the metacercaria and cyst and effect on the fish are described. Such sandstone, here called Nubian-type sandstone, ranges from Cambrian through Cretaceous in age and its genesis has been interpreted in many ways. Studies of its primary structures, and of the direction of sand transport, based on statistical measurements of foreset dip directions, have contributed new data on its genesis.

By far the most common structure in Nubian-type sandstone is a medium-scale planar-type cross stratification in which sets of evenly dipping cross beds are bounded by essentially flat-lying top and bottom surfaces to form tabular bodies. Other less numerous but typical structures are large-scale, truncated-wedge cross strata, trough-type cross strata, intraformational recumbent folds, small-scale ripple laminae, and dipping sets of tabular-planar cross beds.

An analysis of these structures suggests that in the typical Nubian Sandstone of Cretaceous age eolian deposits are not represented and normal marine types probably also are lacking; flood plain, pond or lagoon, and other continental and marginal environments are indicated. In the Carboniferous rocks of Sinai Peninsula some beach sandstone and possibly some eolian, in addition to the types described, form part of the sequence.

Direction of sand transport, as determined from cross-bed dips, was northerly in the Cretaceous Nubian of Libya, Sudan, and Egypt; easterly in the Jurassic Adigrat of Ethiopia; westerly in the Carboniferous of Sinai; northwesterly in the early Paleozoic of Jordan.
","language":"English","publisher":"Springer","doi":"10.1007/BF01821143","usgsCitation":"McKee, E., 1963, Origin of the Nubian and similar sandstones: Geologische Rundschau, v. 52, no. 2, p. 551-587, https://doi.org/10.1007/BF01821143.","productDescription":"37 p.","startPage":"551","endPage":"587","numberOfPages":"37","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218648,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"52","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a70fce4b0c8380cd763ab","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"McKee, E. Associated with the Sheyenne River, which flows through the southern part of the region in a deep trench, are many stream terraces, spillways, deposits of ice-contact stratified drift, and eroded ground-moraine areas. Six stages of drainage have been established to which these various features can be assigned. In the first two stages the features formed as melt water drained to the glacial James River south of the region and as the ice front stood at and later retreated from the site of the Heimdal moraine, a recessional moraine of the Leeds lobe. The later stages occurred after the valley of the Sheyenne River was free of ice and after glacial Lake Souris northwest of the region drained down the valley to glacial Lake Agassiz in the eastern part of the state. Features originating during the four later stages are largely related to the deposition of the North Viking moraine (another, more northern, recessional moraine of the Leeds lobe) and subsequent retreat of the ice from the moraine. Discharge from the local Devils and Stump lakes and from glacial Lake Souris also were of considerable importance in the genesis of many features.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1963)74[859:LPGDIT]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Aronow, S., 1963, Late Pleistocene glacial drainage in the Devils Lake Region, North Dakota: GSA Bulletin, v. 74, no. 7, p. 859-874, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1963)74[859:LPGDIT]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"859","endPage":"874","costCenters":[{"id":478,"text":"North Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true},{"id":34685,"text":"Dakota Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":352309,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"North Dakota","otherGeospatial":"Devils Lake","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -99.25,\n              47.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.25,\n              47.75\n            ],\n            [\n              -98.25,\n              48\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.25,\n              48\n            ],\n            [\n              -99.25,\n              47.75\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"74","issue":"7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"5aff6264e4b0da30c1bfde80","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Aronow, Saul","contributorId":59509,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Aronow","given":"Saul","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":730482,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

This report will include records collected subsequent to data published in earlier reports listed in the bibliography. The interpretive material will be published in a companion report by George W. Sandberg.

This report is most useful in predicting conditions likely to be found in areas that are being considered as well sites. The person considering the new well can spot the proposed site on plate 1 and examine the records of nearby wells as shown in the tables and figure 2. From table 1 he can note such things as diameter, depth, water level, yield, use of water, and depth to aquifers in wells in the vicinity, and from the well logs in table 3 he can note the type of material that yields water to the wells. Table 2 gives several years record of yields and pumping levels of irrigation wells, and in table 4 are the chemical analyses of water from wells and springs. Figure 2 shows the historic fluctuations and trends of water levels in the four valleys. If the reader decides from his examination that conditions are favorable, he can place an application to drill a well with the State Engineer. During the past several years, however, the State Engineer has rejected new applications to appropriate water in major portions of Beaver Valley, Milford and Beryl-Enterprise districts in Escalante Valley, and Cedar City Valley. Anyone seeking to initiate a new ground-water right in any of these areas should obtain information from the State Engineer's Office in either Salt Lake City or Cedar City to determine the likelihood of approval of the required application.

The report is also useful when planning large-scale developments of water supply. One hundred eighty-six bottles or 65.7 percent of those released in 1931, 331 bottles or 71.6 percent of 1932 releases, and 517 bottles or 69.4 percent of releases in the 2 years were recovered.
