The Basin is about 230 miles long in a northwest-southeast direction and is about 100 miles wide. It is bounded on three sides by mountains in which rocks of Precambrian age are exposed. The Basin is asymmetrical with a steep west limb adjacent to the Bighorn Mountains and a gentle east limb adjacent to the Black Hills. Sedimentary rocks within the Basin have a maximum thickness of about 18,000 feet and rocks of every geologic period are represented. Paleozoic rocks are about 2,500 feet thick and consist of marine bonate rocks and sandstone; Mesozoic rocks are about 9,500 feet thick and consist of both marine and nonmarine siltstone and sandstone; and Cenozoic rocks are from 4,000 to 6,000 feet thick and consist of coal-bearing sandstone and shale. Radioactive waste could be stored in the pore space of permeable sandstone or in shale where space could be developed. Many such rock units that could be used for storing radioactive wastes are present within the Powder River Basin. Permeable sandstone beds that may be possible reservoirs for storage of radioactive waste are present throughout the Powder River Basin. These include sandstone beds in the Flathead Sandstone and equivalent strata in the Deadwood Formation, the Tensleep Sandstone and equivalent strata in the Minnelusa Formation and the Sundance Formation in rocks of pre-Cretaceous age. However, most of the possible sandstone reservoirs are in rocks of Cretaceous age and include sandstone beds in the Fall River, Lakota, Newcastle, Frontier, Cody, and Mesaverde Formations. Problems of containment of waste such as clogging of pore space and chemical incompatibility would have to be solved before a particular sandstone unit could be selected for waste disposal.\r\n\r\nSeveral thick sequences of impermeable shale such as those in the Skull Creek, Mowry, Frontier, Belle Fourche, Cody, Lewis, and Pierre Formations, occur in rocks of Cretaceous age in the Basin. The area includes parts of Rockingham and Strafford Counties.</p><p>The report presents basic data collected as part of an investigation of the geology and ground-water resources of southeastern New Hampshire by the U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the New Hampshire Water Resources Board. The investigations currently in progress relate to the Grinnell and Sperry Glaciers. This program is carried on cooperatively by the Geological Survey, the National Park Service and the Weather Bureau. The program includes the determination of annual changes in the surface elevation of the glaciers by the measurement of profiles, and changes during the summer months by the establishment of and observations at ablation stakes; rapping the glacier termini in selected years to record advance or recession; determination of annual movement by the location of marked rocks; the operation of two storage-precipitation gages in the immediate vicinity of the Grinnell Glacier to record annual precipitation; the operation of two gaging stations, one just below the Grinnell Glacier during the summer months and one Just below the outlet of Grinnell Lake on a year round basis; temperature data near the Grinnell Glacier and temperature and precipitation data at the Sperry Chalet near the Sperry Glacier during the summer months. Complexly deformed  impure quartzites and limestones of the Mississippian Milligen and Pennsylvanian-Permian Wood River formations were intruded by large bodies of quartz diorite and granodiorite along regional structures trending northwesterly; the intrusions are part of the Cretaceous Idaho batholith. Erosional remnants of the Challis volcanics, dominantly latitic to andesitic in composition and early(?) to middle Tertiary in age, rest unconformably on the older rocks. A sequence of Pliocene Rhyolitic ash flows and basaltic lava flows unconformably overlies the Challis and older rocks and is in turn unconformably overlain by olivine basalt of late Pliocene or early Quaternary age. The main valleys of the area, partly Erosional and partly structural in origin, are underlaind by late Quaternary olivine basalt flows (Snake River basalt) and intercalated lacustrine, fluvial, proglacial sediments.\r\n\r\nThe Big Wood River, the master stream of the area, flows southward through a narrow steep-sided valley in the mountainous country north of the Bellevue area and debouches into a broad alluvial valley, the Wood River Valley, in the foothill belt. The valley has the shape of an isosceles triangle with a ten mile long, east-west base consisting of a ridge of Pliocene volcanics which separates the valley from the Snake River Plains to the south. The river now flows through a narrow gap in the southwest corner of the triangle. A similar, but wider, gap around the east end of the ridge was formerly occupied by the river. The river has been shifted back and forth between these two gaps at least four times during an interval in which six late Quaternary basalt flows erupted in the Bellevue area. Two of the flows caused direct diversion of the river and another was influential in bringing about a diversion on an aggradational fan upstream from the lava dam.\r\n\r\nJust prior to the Bull Lake stage the river, flowing out the east gap, was blocked but not diverted by the youngest basalt flow in the Bellevue area. During the proglacial aggradation, the river shifted widely on its fan and spilled alternatively out both the east and west gaps. After the Bull Lake stage, the west gap had an advantageous base level relative to the lava-blocked east gap, and the river cut down in the west gap. After the second, Pinedale, proglacial aggradation in the Wood River Valley, the west gap still maintained an advantageous base level, and the river again cut down in the west outlet valley where it remains today.\r\n\r\nPeriglacial deposits completely dominate the sidestream valleys of the Bellevue area. They formed under a rigorous climate during the Pinedale stage, when slope erosion accelerated by frost activated processes caused aggradation of valley floors by local detritus. Even at present the larger sidestreams are so choked with detritus that the streams have not regained control of their valley floors.\r\n\r\nRecent basalt, comparable in age to the younger flows of the Craters of the Moon National Monument, spread from a rugged, cratered vent several miles south of the Bellevue area. About 95 percent of the area is underlain by shale, sandstone, and coal of Pennsylvanian age. Principal factors governing the availability of water in the region are depth, topographic location, and the lithology of the aquifer penetrated. In general, the yield of the well increases as the depth increases. Wells drilled in topographic lows, such as valleys, are likely to yield more water than wells drilled on topographic highs, such as hills. Sand and gravel, present in thick beds in the alluvium along the Ohio River, form the most productive aquifer in the Eastern Coal Field. Of the consolidated rocks in the region sandstone strata are the best aquifers chiefly because joints, openings along bedding planes, and intergranular pore spaces are best developed in them. Shale also supplies water to many wells in the region, chiefly from joints and openings along bedding planes. Coal constitutes a very small part of the sedimentary section, but it yields water from fractures to many wells. Limestone yields water readily from solution cavities developed along joint and bedding-plane openings. \r\n\r\nThe availability of water in different parts of the region was determined chiefly by analyzing well data collected during the reconnaissance. The resulting water-availability maps, published as hydrologic investigations atlases (Price and others, 1961 a, b; Kilburn and others, 1961) were designed to be used in conjunction with this report. The maps were constructed by dividing the region into 5 physiographic areas, into 10 subareas based chiefly on lithologic facies, and, in the case of the Kanawha section, into 2 quality-of-water areas. The 5 physiographic areas are the Knobs, Mississippian Plateau, Cumberland Plateau section, Kanawha section, and Cumberland Mountain section. \r\n\r\nThe 10 subareas are as follows: \r\n\r\n1. The Chattanooga shale. This black shale yields only enough water for a minimum domestic supply-100 to 500 gpd (gallons per day). \r\n\r\n2. Mississippian-Devonian rocks exposed along Pine Mountain. These rocks consist of shale, limestone, and sandstone. The limestone yields water to springs, and faulted limestone and sandstone lying below drainage may yield several hundred gallons per minute to wells. \r\n\r\n3. Mississippian rocks exposed along the western margin of the region. These rocks consist of thick limestone underlain by shale. The limestone yields enough water for a modern domestic supply (more than 500 gpd) , and discharges as much as 100 gpm (gallons per minute) to springs. The shale yields only enough water for a minimum domestic supply. \r\n\r\n4. Subarea 1 of the Lee formation of Pennsylvanian age. The thin shaly rocks of this subarea generally yield only enough water for a minimum domestic supply. \r\n\r\n5. Subarea 2 of the Lee formation of Pennsylvanian age. This subarea is predominantly underlain by massive sandstones; it generally yields enough water for a modern domestic supply, and in some places, enough water for small public and industrial supplies. \r\n\r\n6. Subarea 1 of the Breathitt and Conemaugh formations of Pennsylvanian age. Rocks in this subarea contain more shale than sandstone. Wells in this subarea range from adequate for a minimum domestic supply to adequate for a modern domestic supply. \r\n\r\n7. Subarea 2 of the Breathitt formation of Pennsylvanian age and undifferentiated post-Lee Pennsylvanian rocks. Wells in this subarea yield enough water for a modern domestic supply, and in many places, enough water for small public and industrial supplies. \r\n\r\n8. Alluvium along the Ohio River. Mostly composed of glacial outwash sand and gravel, the alluvium is reported to yield as much as 360 gpm to wells. \r\n\r\n9. Alluvium along the Big Sandy River and lower reaches of its Tug and Levisa Forks.
