From 1954-57 uranium and radium concentrations were determined in 561 samples, mainly of ground water, having wide geologic and geographic distribution. These concentrations, together with data on the hydrologic and geologic environment, the beta-gamma activity, and the chemical characteristics of each sample, are tabulated by States.</p><p>The conterminous United States was subdivided into 10 geotectonic regions to facilitate statistical interpretation of the occurrence of uranium and radium in fresh water in approximately homogeneous geologic provinces. For each geotectonic region, the range and median were determined for the concentrations of radium and uranium; for regions from which sufficient data were available, log-normal frequency distribution curves were calculated and superimposed on histograms of radium and uranium concentrations in the samples. An \"anomaly threshold\" is suggested for both radioelements for each region analyzed statistically. The western stable region had the greatest median and highest \"anomaly threshold\" for uranium. This region also had the highest \"anomaly threshold\" for radium, but the largest median for radium was found for samples collected in the Ozark-Ouachita system. The median concentration for uranium was lowest for the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain and the Pacific orogenic belt. The procedure involves pumping the well in such a manner that the drawdown of water level is constant while the discharges of the different aquifers are measured by means of borehole flowmeters. \r\n\r\nThe theory is developed by analogy to the heat-flow problem solved by Smith. The internal discharge between aquifers after the well is completed is analyzed as the first step. Pumping at constant, drawdown constitutes the second step. Transmissibility and storage coefficients are determined by a method described by Jacob and Lohman, after the original internal discharge to or from the aquifer has been compensated for in the calculations. The original hydrostatic head of each aquifer is then determined by resubstituting the transmissibility and storage coefficients into the first step of the analysis. \r\n\r\nThe method was tested on a well in Chester County, Pa., but the results were not entirely satisfactory, owing to the lack of sufficiently accurate methods of flow measurement and, probably, to the effects of entrance losses in the well. The determinations of the transmissibility coefficient and static head can be accepted as having order-of-magnitude significance, but the determinations of the storage coefficient, which is highly sensitive to experimental error, must be rejected. It is felt that better results may be achieved in the future, as more reliable devices for metering the flow become available and as more is learned concerning the nature of entrance losses. Fluorspar mining started \r\nin the area about 1900 and, as of 1945, more than 200,000 tons of crude ore \r\nprobably has been mined; most of the ore was from the Levias-Keystone area. \r\nA small quantity of zinc and lead ore also is present in the Dike-Eaton area.\r\n\r\nThe deposits are localized along faults that displace fiat-lying or low-dipping \r\nlimestones, sandstones, and shales of the Meramec and Chester series of Missis- \r\nsippian age. Movement along most of the faults was principally vertical, with \r\ndisplacement as much as 600 feet. Some horizontal movement occurred along \r\nat least one fault. Geologic mapping of the surface and data from underground \r\nworkings have revealed 13 faults in an area of four-fifths of a square mile. \r\nOnly a few of these faults are known to contain economically important deposits \r\nof fiuorspar.\r\n\r\nThe most abundant vein minerals are calcite and fiuorite with subordinate \r\nquantities of sphalerite, galena, barite, and quartz. Some weathering products \r\nof sphalerite and galena are present also. The veins are dominantly calcite \r\nthat contains fiuorite lenses but in places are mainly fiuorite having lesser \r\nquantities of calcite. Sphalerite- and galena-bearing deposits are present in the Dike-Eaton area. The ore bodies mainly are the result of fissure filling and replacement of calcite by fiuorite; in addition a small amount of limestone \r\nwallrock probably has been replaced. Residual concentrations of high-grade \r\nfluorspar in the overburden above faults have yielded some so-called gravel \r\nfiuorspar.
