Zinc is absorbed on anion-exchange resin from 1.2 M hydrochloric acid and eluted with 0.01 M hydrochloric acid. A diethyldithiocarbamate separation removes traces of interfering elements from the eluate. The zinc-diethyldithiocarbamate complex is extracted into chloroform at pH 8.5 and reextracted from other elements in the chloroform solution with 0.16 M hydrochloric acid and finally determined spectrophotometrically as the zincon complex at 621 mμ.

The coefficient of variation of the method determined from replicate determinations of zinc on 75 selected samples of basalt, ranging in zinc content from 0.004 to 0.018 per cent, was found to be 6.3 per cent and essentially constant in the range of zinc content studied. This method of analysis has been used extensively for a study of zinc in basalts reported by Rader, Swadley, Huffman and Lipp (companion paper, 1963).
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(63)90023-1","usgsCitation":"Huffman, C., Lipp, H.H., and Rader, L., 1963, Spectrophotometric determination of micro quantities of zinc in rocks: Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 27, no. 3, p. 209-215, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(63)90023-1.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"209","endPage":"215","numberOfPages":"7","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":218769,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"27","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b95a8e4b08c986b31b03d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Huffman, C. The modern production, though far below the earlier, has accounted for more than 10 percent of the total value of the fishery in all but one of the last 20 years. Data are given on growth rate, age and year-class composition, size distribution, and length-weight relation of 1,800 fish collected in 1957-59 at Bayfield, Wis., and Marquette, Whitefish Point, and Dollar Settlement, Mich. Studies of the body-scale relation, sex ratio, and age and size at maturity were limited to fish collected at Bayfield. The age composition and mean age varied widely by port and year of capture. Oldest fish were those of the 1957 Bayfield samples which were dominated by age group VII and averaged 5.5 years old. The youngest were from Whitefish Point in 1959; age-group III was dominant, and the mean age was 3.2 years. The evidence on the strength of year classes was not clear-cut, but it was obvious that fluctuations in stocks of different areas were largely independent. The percentage of legal-size fish (17 inches or longer) in age groups ranged widely; only 8.6 percent of the V group were legal in the 1957 Bayfield collections, whereas 100 percent of fish of the same age were legal in the 1957-59 collections from Whitefish Point. The weight of whitefish in the combined samples increased as the 3.2408 power of the length. The growth rate from the fastest to the slowest growing stocks ranked as follows: Whitefish Point; Dollar Settlement and Marquette (fish from the two ports reversed ranks after 3 years); Bayfield. The major differences in growth in length among the various stocks occurred during the first years of life. Beyond the fifth year the annual increments were nearly the same in all stocks. The whitefish from Whitefish Point, Dollar Settlement, and Marquette are among the fastest growing in the Great Lakes. The differences among the Lake Superior stocks in age and year-class composition, and in growth rate offer convincing evidence that populations of different areas are entirely independent. The sexes were almost equally represented (51.5 percent males) in the combined Bayfield samples, but males were scarce in age groups older than VIII. Whitefish from Bayfield shorter than 14.5 inches were immature and those larger than 17.4 inches were mature. The youngest mature fish belonged to age-group V,and all older than the VII group were mature.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Fishery Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","usgsCitation":"Dryer, W.R., 1963, Age and growth of the whitefish in Lake Superior: Fishery Bulletin, v. 63, no. 1, p. 77-95.","productDescription":"19 p.","startPage":"77","endPage":"95","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":128720,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266925,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://fishbull.noaa.gov/63-1/dryer.pdf"}],"volume":"63","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae3e4b07f02db6896d5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dryer, William R.","contributorId":71921,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dryer","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308130,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The indigenous peoples had been building for 300 years a culture centred around community life based on flood-water farming and on hunting. A large number of pueblos had developed on sites earlier occupied by pit-house people. Community organization had brought advances in the ceramic and decorative arts, and changes in these artistic activities were sufficiently rapid that accurate chronologies have become available through the work of archaeologists during the twentieth century.

These chronologies were at first unrelated to absolute dates, but the excavations of the 1920s at Chaco Canyon (New Mexico) provided the materials through which absolute dates could be established. This was accomplished by matching the changes in tree-ring width backward in time from living trees through successively older samples. Trees overlapping in age provided, by unique successions of distinctive tree-ring widths, a calendar by which individual logs could be dated. Beams found in the excavations at Chaco Canyon gave the first material by which the cultural developments culminating about A.D. 1300 could be dated.

As a result of the time sequence provided by the tree-ring calendar, the dates within which different pottery types were developed could be accurately established. The dates of pottery types have been checked at a sufficiently large number of sites throughout the south-western United States that absolute dating of a large number of distinctive patterns can be considered unassailable.

The sequence of tree-ring widths gives some climatic indications of great interest both to archaeologists and to climatologists. A relatively large number of logs spanning the period from A.D. 1200 to 1300 and, in particular, the years between 1276 and 1299, indicate that this period was generally characterized by smaller tree-ring widths than in the centuries immediately before and after. As a first approximation, the hundred years of narrow tree-ring widths were interpreted as a time of relative aridity, and have been referred to as the “Pueblo Drought”.

More recent studies of tree-ring widths using sophisticated statistical techniques have thrown some doubts on any direct correlation of tree-ring widths with rainfall. Such doubts have been put forward before by Glock (1955) whose studies have been aimed at separating the various effects of seasonal occurrence of precipitation, the amount falling in various seasons, and other climatic factors in their relative influence on tree-ring widths. At present, then, tree-ring widths may be considered more satisfactory for reading chronology than for reading climate.

It is this concern about direct correlation of tree-ring width with climate that led to initiation of the present study. This work is a preliminary attempt to obtain independent evidence from pollen concerning the probable nature of the vegetation and thus the climate in a period known to be characterized by narrow tree rings.
","conferenceTitle":"Arid Zone Research - XX: Changes of Climate","conferenceDate":"Rome, Italy","conferenceLocation":"October 2-7, 1961","language":"English","publisher":"UNESCO","publisherLocation":"Paris, France","usgsCitation":"Leopold, L.B., Leopold, E.B., and Wendorf, F., 1963, Some climatic indicators in the period A.D. 1200-1400 in New Mexico, Arid Zone Research - XX: Changes of Climate, October 2-7, 1961, Rome, Italy, p. 265-270.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"265","endPage":"270","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":338307,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":338306,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.unesco.org/ulis/cgi-bin/ulis.pl?catno=69895&set=0058D562F8_3_182&gp=1&lin=1&ll=1"}],"country":"United States","state":"New Mexico","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58d63044e4b05ec79913113d","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leopold, Luna Bergere","contributorId":93884,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leopold","given":"Luna","email":"","middleInitial":"Bergere","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":686101,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Leopold, Estella B.","contributorId":30979,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leopold","given":"Estella","email":"","middleInitial":"B.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":686102,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Wendorf, F.","contributorId":103801,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wendorf","given":"F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":686103,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

It is well known that river channels, particularly those flowing through alluvium or on relatively soft bedrock, tend to develop flood plains by lateral migration of the channel. Abandoned flood plains at elevations distinctly above the present river channel are the origin of river terraces, widespread through the world but particularly noticeable in arid regions. Climatic change is one of the causes of the abandonment of flood plains and the consequent formation of river terraces. Therefore, the identification and stratigraphy of river terraces is one of the methods by which climatic changes in the recent geologic past can be studied.

There are, of course, morphologic changes in river channels of a more subtle nature. Even when a channel is progressively degrading-a trend which will eventually result in the formation of a river terracethere are no obvious criteria by which the current changes in a river channel can be positively identified. For this reason simple techniques, which will aid in the direct observation of current changes in a channel’s position, can be helpful in identifying the nature of changes in progress.

It is the purpose of this paper to describe some relatively simple techniques which have been found to be useful in observing morphological changes on slopes and in channels. The methods have been tested primarily in arid climates but to some extent they can also be useful even where vegetation is prominent.
","conferenceTitle":"Arid Zone Research - XX: Changes of Climate","conferenceDate":"October 2-7, 1961","conferenceLocation":"Rome, Italy","language":"English","publisher":"UNESCO","publisherLocation":"Paris, France","usgsCitation":"Miller, J., and Leopold, L.B., 1963, Simple measurements of morphological changes in river channels and hillslopes, Arid Zone Research - XX: Changes of Climate, Rome, Italy, October 2-7, 1961, p. 421-427.","productDescription":"7 p.","startPage":"421","endPage":"427","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":338305,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":338304,"rank":1,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://www.unesco.org/ulis/cgi-bin/ulis.pl?catno=69895&set=0058D562F8_3_182&gp=1&lin=1&ll=1"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"58d63044e4b05ec79913113f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Miller, J.P.","contributorId":62269,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Miller","given":"J.P.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":686096,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Leopold, Luna Bergere","contributorId":93884,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leopold","given":"Luna","email":"","middleInitial":"Bergere","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":686097,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Observations were restricted to the central basin in 1959, but were lake-wide in 1960. Approximately 70 percent of the bottom waters of the central basin had a serious oxygen deficiency during both years. Data were obtained also on the distribution of temperature, transparency, specific conductance, pH, and phenolphthalein and total alkalinity. High sensitivity is the common denominator in eliminating or reducing all types of interference and the general equation is the key for quickly selecting conditions that give maximum sensitivity. With a transmission-type fluorometer, experimental fluorescence intensities adhere to the general equation over a very wide range of light absorption. If the instrument has a vertical axis, solution depth can be adjusted so that the data fall on that portion of the theoretical curve which is essentially a straight line. When the fluorescence wavelength selected for measurement is not absorbed by the solution, the general equation reduces to a much simpler expression, and then, under proper circumstances, fluorescence values can be used for calculations as confidently and as easily as absorbance values.","language":"English","publisher":"ACS Publications","doi":"10.1021/ac60196a004","usgsCitation":"Fletcher, M.H., 1963, Study of multicomponent mixtures in solution with a vertical-axis transmission-type filter-fluorometer: Analytical Chemistry, v. 35, no. 3, p. 278-288, https://doi.org/10.1021/ac60196a004.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"278","endPage":"288","numberOfPages":"11","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219483,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"35","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2002-05-01","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505b9cd7e4b08c986b31d4df","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Fletcher, M.
