This research is being carried out under the Branch of Astrogeology. The long-range objectives of this program are to determine and map the stratigraphy and structure of the Moon's crust, to develop basic information on processes that have led to the present condition of the Moon's surface, and to work out the sequence of events in the geologic history recorded in the Moon's stratigraphy and structure. The work includes three closely interrelated areas of study: (1) investigation of the chemistry, petrography, and physical properties of extraterrestrial materials that may have been derived from the Moon, such as tektites, certain types of meteorites, and extraterrestrial dust; (2) experimental and field investigations of the mechanics and phenomena of impact of high-speed objects and of cratering; and (3) geologic mapping of the Moon.</p><p>Immediate objectives for the fiscal year 1961 have included the preparation of geologic maps for the nominal target area for the Ranger Project of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Field and laboratory work on craters was directed toward developing data and an adequate theory for the integrated effect of meteoroid bombardment of the lunar surface. Special attention has been given to phase changes and solid state changes produced in rock by meteorite impact. The chemical analyses indicate that small amounts of potassium salts (Average 3.5 percent potassium) occur in the surface evaporites and the brine contains an appreciable amount of magnesium (Average 3 percent magnesium). It is connected to the newly constructed black-top Fezzan road by about 250 kilometers of secondary road. The deposit is a salt flat that lies in a closed depression. Numerous furnaces were erected int the region, especially in and near Birmingham, Ala., which is still the principal iron and steel-making center of the area. Locally mined iron ores formed the principal feed of the furnaces, and much of the ore was mined from red beds of Silurian age. These red beds are an abundant resource of iron ore, and they account for a large part of the total production in the Southeastern United States. Exhaustion of near-surface ores, which was easily mined and the best grade, combined with improved transportation and economies of large-scale operations elsewhere, forced most of the furnaces to shut down (Edpt. of the Interior, 1959, production statistics and tables 4-9).&nbsp;</p>\n<p>Geological studies have determined the lithology and approximate extent of the red iron ores of Silurian age in the Southeast. Detailed investigations have been made by private companies and government agencies.
