The area covered by this report (fig. 1) includes about 390 square miles of southeastern New Hampshire adjacent to the Atlantic Ocean. It lies between Massachusetts on the south and Maine on the north and east, and it is bounded on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and on the west by a line drawn approximately northward from Atkinson at the Massachusetts border to Farmington near the Maine border. The area includes parts of Rockingham and Strafford Counties.
The report presents basic data collected as part of an investigation of the geology and ground-water resources of southeastern New Hampshire by the U. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the New Hampshire Water Resources Board. These data have been prepared for release in order to make available to the public basic ground-water data that will be useful in the planning of water-resources development.
Most of the data contained in this report were collected by Edward Bradley during the period September 1953 to January 1958.

The program includes the determination of annual changes in the surface elevation of the glaciers by the measurement of profiles, and changes during the summer months by the establishment of and observations at ablation stakes; rapping the glacier termini in selected years to record advance or recession; determination of annual movement by the location of marked rocks; the operation of two storage-precipitation gages in the immediate vicinity of the Grinnell Glacier to record annual precipitation; the operation of two gaging stations, one just below the Grinnell Glacier during the summer months and one Just below the outlet of Grinnell Lake on a year round basis; temperature data near the Grinnell Glacier and temperature and precipitation data at the Sperry Chalet near the Sperry Glacier during the summer months. The Basin is about 230 miles long in a northwest-southeast direction and is about 100 miles wide. It is bounded on three sides by mountains in which rocks of Precambrian age are exposed. The Basin is asymmetrical with a steep west limb adjacent to the Bighorn Mountains and a gentle east limb adjacent to the Black Hills. Sedimentary rocks within the Basin have a maximum thickness of about 18,000 feet and rocks of every geologic period are represented. Paleozoic rocks are about 2,500 feet thick and consist of marine bonate rocks and sandstone; Mesozoic rocks are about 9,500 feet thick and consist of both marine and nonmarine siltstone and sandstone; and Cenozoic rocks are from 4,000 to 6,000 feet thick and consist of coal-bearing sandstone and shale. Radioactive waste could be stored in the pore space of permeable sandstone or in shale where space could be developed. Many such rock units that could be used for storing radioactive wastes are present within the Powder River Basin. Permeable sandstone beds that may be possible reservoirs for storage of radioactive waste are present throughout the Powder River Basin. These include sandstone beds in the Flathead Sandstone and equivalent strata in the Deadwood Formation, the Tensleep Sandstone and equivalent strata in the Minnelusa Formation and the Sundance Formation in rocks of pre-Cretaceous age. However, most of the possible sandstone reservoirs are in rocks of Cretaceous age and include sandstone beds in the Fall River, Lakota, Newcastle, Frontier, Cody, and Mesaverde Formations. Problems of containment of waste such as clogging of pore space and chemical incompatibility would have to be solved before a particular sandstone unit could be selected for waste disposal.\r\n\r\nSeveral thick sequences of impermeable shale such as those in the Skull Creek, Mowry, Frontier, Belle Fourche, Cody, Lewis, and Pierre Formations, occur in rocks of Cretaceous age in the Basin. The general chemical quality of water in the estuary is described, including changes in salinity in the river cross section and profile, diurnal and seasonal changes, and the effects of rainfall, sea level, and winds on salinity. Relationships are established of the concentrations of chloride and dissolved solids to specific conductance. In addition to chloride profiles and isochlor plots, time series are plotted for salinity or some quantity representing salinity, fresh-water discharge, mean river level, and mean sea level. \r\n\r\n The two major variables which appear to have the greatest effect on the salinity of the estuary are the fresh-water flow of the river and sea level. They are in the eastern part of the San Francisco volcanic field and on the southwest flank of the Black Mesa basin. The Supai formation, Coconino sandstone, Kaibab limestone, Moenkopi formation, and Chinle formation are overlain in parts of the area by volcanic rocks and alluvium. The regional water table occurs chiefly in the Coconino sandstone at altitudes of about 5,000 feet at Sunset Crater, about 4,075 feet near Wupatki Ruin, and about 4,100 feet near Citadel Ruin. The general movement of the ground water is northeastward. Small supplies of perched water occur in the Moenkopi formation and in the alluvium, and perched water may be present locally in the volcanic rocks. The results of the field investigation indicated that adequate ground-water supplies were available from the Coconino sandstone to meet the needs of the National Monuments, and a well was drilled at the Wupatki Monument headquarters in 1958 to a total depth of 904 feet. About 55,000 acre-feet per year comes from Little Beaver Creek basin, a tributary drainage of 195 square miles.\r\nYearly streamflow is highly variable. The discharge of Little Beaver Creek near Duncan during 13-year period of record (water years 1949-61) has ranged from 86,530 acre-feet in calendar year 1957 to 4,880 acre-feet in 1956, a ratio of almost 18 to 1.\r\n\r\nHighest runoff within a year tends to occur in the spring months of May and June, a 2-month period that, on the average, accounts for more than half of the annual discharge of Little Beaver Creek near Duncan. The average monthly runoff during record was lowest in January. Variation in daily streamflow is such that while the average discharge for the 13-year period of record was 50.1 cfs (cubic feet per second), the daily discharge was more than 6 cfs only about half of the time. There was no flow at the site 19 percent of the time during the period.\r\n\r\nSome base runoff usually exists in the headwaters of Beaver and Little Beaver Creeks, and in the lower reaches of Beaver Creek. Low flow in Cow Creek tends to be sustained by waste water from Duncan, where water use in 1961 averaged 4 million gallons per day. In the remainder of the basin, periods of no flow occur in most years.\r\n\r\nThe surface water of Beaver Creek basin is very hard but in general is usable for municipal, agricultural and industrial purposes. The chemical character of the water is predominantly a calcium, magnesium bicarbonate type of water in the lower three quarters of the basin, except in Cow Creek where oil-field brines induce a distinct sodium, calcium chloride characteristic at low and medium flows. A calcium sulfate type of water occurs in most of the northern part of the basin except in headwater areas underlain by the Rush Springs Sandstone, where quality is similar to that in the lower basin.\r\n\r\nThe report gives an estimate of the average discharge at several sites in Beaver Creek basin for a 19-year base period, October 1937 to September 1956. Duration curves of daily discharge for Little Beaver Creek near Duncan and Beaver Creek near Waurika are shown for the period of record. Monthly and annual discharge records for these gaging stations are presented. The results of 52 discharge measurements at 17 other sites in the basin are tabulated, with 5 groups being plotted as discharge profiles. Principal results have been summarized (Overstreet, Theobald, and Whitlow, 19)9, p. 709- 714). Details of the exploratory drilling of four monazite placers in this area were released in 1953 and 1954 (Griffith and Overstreet, 1955a, p. 3-30; 1953b, p. 3-17; 1953c, p. 3-27; Hansen and Cuppels, 1954, p. 3-27).
The samples described were panned by the writer, his co-workers, and assistants .etween July and November 1931 and April and November 19,2. Co-workers were J. W. Whitlow, W. C. Overstreet, A. M. White, N. P. Cuppels, and D. W. Caldwell. Assistants were J. W. Keeler in 19)1 and B. F. Spradlin, P. E. Myers, and J. W. Wissert, Jr., in 1952. The methods used to collect the samples and pan the concentrates have been described in detail (Theobald, 3.957, p. 3-6).
