This buried surface is of utmost importance in understanding the geologic history of the Nevada Test Site region, the thickness and distribution of the overlying volcanic rocks and alluvium, and the movement of ground water. The Paleozoic rocks cause positive gravity anomalies where they outcrop or occur near the surface and negative anomalies where they are buried in valleys or capped by low-density Tertiary volcanic rocks. </p><p>Gravity trends which extend over the entire area provide a basis for computing the regional gravity gradient. The regional gravity gradient must be removed from the data for geologic interpretation of the paleotopographic surface in any limited area. </p><p>Knowledge of the thickness of low-density material overlying the paleotopographic surface is useful in several ways. Proposed&nbsp;underground test sites, such as drill holes and tunnels, may be evaluated in terms of rock unit thickness and alluvial cover requirements. Recent work by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey has demonstrated ground-water movement through the Paleozoic rocks in the vicinity of the Nevada Test Site. Therefore, knowledge of the position of buried Paleozoic rocks is important in evaluating (a) the rate and direction of flow of the ground water, (b) ground-water supplies for domestic and industrial uses, and (c) the possibility of radioactive contamination of ground water. Finally, regional gravity trends and paleotopography are useful in working out the structural history of the area in connection with geologic studies now in progress. </p><p>The purpose of this interim report is to present the major part of the gravity data obtained as of December 31, 1961. The data are presented as a complete Bouguer gravity anomaly map. Although the gravity contours are somewhat generalized because the map has a scale of 1:250,000 and a contour interval of 5 milligals, the largest anomalies are adequately delineated. </p><p>Preliminary results of this gravity survey have been reported by Wilmarth and others, 1960, and by Diment and others, 1959 and 1960.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr6258","collaboration":"Prepared on behalf of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission,","usgsCitation":"Healy, D.L., and Miller, C., 1962, Gravity survey of the Nevada Test Site and vicinity, Nye, Lincoln, and Clark Counties, Nevada--interim report: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 62-58, Report: 34 p.; 3 Figures: 19.52 x 25.07 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6258.","productDescription":"Report: 34 p.; 3 Figures: 19.52 x 25.07 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":86763,"rank":401,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0058/plate-2.pdf","text":"Figure 3","size":"2.28 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Figure 3"},{"id":86764,"rank":402,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0058/plate-3.pdf","text":"Figure 5","size":"1.60 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Figure 5"},{"id":86765,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0058/report.pdf","text":"Report","size":"514.56 kB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Report"},{"id":175257,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0058/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":86762,"rank":400,"type":{"id":29,"text":"Figure"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0058/plate-1.pdf","text":"Figure 2","size":"3.27 MB","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"},"description":"Figure 2"}],"country":"United States","state":"Nevada","county":"Clark County, Lincoln County, Nye County","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.191162109375,\n              36.20882309283712\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.06005859375,\n              36.20882309283712\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.06005859375,\n              38.71123253895224\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.191162109375,\n              38.71123253895224\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.191162109375,\n              36.20882309283712\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4abae4b07f02db671fd1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Healy, D. The maximum monthly runoff was 24,090 acre-feet in May 1957.\r\n\r\nOtter Creek has extended periods of no flow except for about the last 5 miles near the mouth. The most severe droughts occurred in 1938-41 and 1952-56. Periods of no flow have extended as long as 363 days and have exceeded 300 days many times.\r\n\r\nThe usable storage required to provide a regulated discharge equal to about half the average discharge at the gaging station at Snyder Lake during the most deficient period was determined to be 18,000 acre-feet.\r\n\r\nMiscellaneous measurements made at selected sites show that there is no sustained base flow in any of the tributaries and none in the mainstem except for about the last 5 miles near the mouth. A group of measurements made in September 1961, when there was ground-water outflow in all of the main tributaries except Horse Creek, shows that most of the ground-water outflow in the upper part of the basin comes from the tributaries that originate in the Wichita Mountains. Considerable base runoff occurs in the lower part of the basin from large alluvial and terrace deposits.\r\n\r\n(available as photostat copy only)","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr62155","usgsCitation":"Westfall, A., 1962, Surface waters of Otter Creek basin in southwestern Oklahoma: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 62-155, 37 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr62155.","productDescription":"37 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":179583,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afee4b07f02db69795e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Westfall, A.O.","contributorId":85225,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Westfall","given":"A.O.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245103,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Ul2e.04 tunnel was driven about S. 15? W. in zeolitic tuff of subunits E and F of Tunnel Bed W near the top of the lower member of the Indian Trail Formation (upper Miocene or lower Pliocene). Dolomite of Paleozoic age lies about 915 feet below the end of the tunnel; vertical cover over the end of the tunnel to the surface of Rainier Mesa is about 1,390 feet. This report presents details of two test holes which were drilled to determine ground-water conditions in the near vicinity of the shot point.\r\n\r\nA well-defined aquifer is present at the site of USGS test hole 1, about 1,000 feet south of the access shaft to the underground shot point. Water with 75 feet of artesian pressure head is contained in the Culebra dolomite member of the Rustler formation. The dolomite aquifer is 32 feet thick and its top lies at a depth of 517 feet below land surface. The aquifer yielded 100 gpm (gallons per minute) with a drawdown of 40 feet during a pumping period of 24 hours. Water was not found in rocks above or below the Culebra dolomite.\r\n\r\nAt the site of USGS test hole 2, about 2 miles southwest of the access shaft no distinctive aquifer exists. About one-half gpm was yielded to the well from the rocks between the Culebra dolomite and the top of the salt. Water could not be detected in the Culebra dolomite or overlying rocks.\r\n\r\nThe report contains drawdown and recovery curves of yield tests, drilling-time charts, and electric logs. The project, known as Project Gnome, is an element of the Plowshare program--a study of peacetime applications of nuclear fission. The location of the proposed underground shot is in a sparsely-populated area in southeastern Eddy County, N. Mex., east of the Pecos River and about 25 miles southeast of the city of Carlsbad. The area is arid to Semiarid and ground water is a vital factor in the economic utilization of the land, which is primarily used for stock raising. An investigation of the Project Gnome site and surrounding area for the purposes of evaluating the ground-water resources and the possible effect upon them from the detonation of the nuclear shot was desired by the Commission. This report describes work done by the U.S. Geological Survey on behalf of the Commission and presents results of the investigation of the ground-water resources and geology of the area. \r\n\r\nThe most intensive investigations were made within a 15-mile radius of the site of Project Gnome and mainly on the east side of the Pecos River. The total area of study of over 1,200 square miles includes parts of Eddy and Lea Counties, N. Mex. \r\n\r\nThe Project Gnome site is in the sedimentary Delaware Basin. It is underlain by about 18,000 feet of sedimentary rocks ranging in age from Ordovician to Recent. Upper Permian evaporitic rocks, which contain the principal source of potash available in the United States, are worked in nearby mines. The potash minerals are found in a massive salt bed about 1,400 feet thick in the Salado Formation of Permian age. The land surface of the area is covered mostly by a wind-blown sand and caliche; however, rocks of the Rustler Formation of Permian age and younger rocks of Permian, Triassic, Pleistocene(?) and Recent age crop out at several localities. Solution by ground water of salt at the top of the Salado Formation and of anhydrite within the Rustler Formation has removed thick sections of these rocks. A subsequent lowering of the land surface and differential collapse of the Rustler has formed many sinkholes and has created a karst topography over much of the western part of the area. \r\n\r\nGround water is obtained from rocks of Permian, Triassic, Tertiary, and Quaternary age in the general region. However, the only aquifer at the Gnome site is the Culebra Dolomite Member of the Rustler Formation of Permian age. The aquifer is about 500 feet beneath the surface at the site and is about 30 feet thick. An aquifer, immediately above the top of the salt, contains a brine solution in Nash Draw, a few miles west of the Gnome site. This aquifer discharges into the Pecos River and is a major source of contamination of the river water. No potable water is known to be present in the area below the top of the salt of the Salado Formation. \r\n\r\nThe ground water in the area is generally under artesian pressure. The general direction of ground-water movement is toward the Pecos River both east and west of the river. At the Gnome site the artesian head of the water in the Culebra Dolomite Member is about 7.5 feet. The water moves westward through the aquifer at a rate of about ? foot per day. The most widespread utilization of ground water east of the river is for stock use. Irrigation usage west of the Pecos River accounts for the largest withdrawal of water. Wells range in depth from a few tens of feet to nearly 800 feet. Water levels range from a few feet to about 500 feet below the surface. A test well at the Gnome site drawing water from the Culebra Dolomite Member was pumped at a rate of 100 gpm (gallons per minute); however, most wells east of the river yield only a few gpm. Irrigation wells west of the river yield as much as 3,500 gpm. \r\n\r\nMost of the water in the area is highly mineralized and is suitable only for use by livest","language":"ENGLISH","doi":"10.3133/ofr6229","usgsCitation":"Cooper, J., 1962, Ground-water investigations of the Project Gnome area, Eddy and Lea Counties, New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 62-29, 67 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6229.","productDescription":"67 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":177171,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0029/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":86746,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0029/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86747,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0029/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86748,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0029/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86749,"rank":403,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0029/plate-4.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86750,"rank":404,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0029/plate-5.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":86751,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0029/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b01e4b07f02db698629","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Cooper, J.B.","contributorId":92316,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Cooper","given":"J.B.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245000,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The Ocala limestone (uppoer Eocene) underlies the quadrangle and crops out along the Flint River and its tributaries and sinkholes. Sinkholes of two ages are developed in the limestone. A gravelly argillaceous sand of Pliocene(?) age is exposed in ditches near the Flint River and in a sinkhole in the western part of the quadrangle. Reddish brown, argillaceous, older Pleistocene sand, believed to be part of a marine terrace deposit above altitude 160 feet, overlies the Pliocene(?) and is exposed in a sinkhole. River terraces are present along the Flint River at altitudes of 175 and 200 feet. Accumulations of dune sand east of the Flint River are believed to have been derived from the earliest river-terrace deposit. The quadrangle is covered by a mixture of reddish-brown, argillaceous, older Pleistocene sand, and residuum containing siliceous boulders from the Ocala limestone, which has been mapped as residuum.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/i348","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Mines, Mining and Geology","usgsCitation":"Wait, R.L., 1962, Geology of the Albany West quadrangle, Georgia: U.S. Geological Survey IMAP 348, Plate: 41.67 x 36.05 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/i348.","productDescription":"Plate: 41.67 x 36.05 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":102896,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_1363.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"1363"},{"id":188414,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/0348/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":279956,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/imap/0348/plate-1.pdf"}],"scale":"24000","country":"United States","state":"Georgia","county":"Dougherty County;Lee County","city":"Albany","otherGeospatial":"Dougherty Plain;Flint River","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -84.25,31.5 ], [ -84.25,31.625 ], [ -84.125,31.625 ], [ -84.125,31.5 ], [ -84.25,31.5 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad5e4b07f02db68361e","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wait, Robert L.","contributorId":12839,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wait","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"L.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":275968,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Current techniques are described and evaluated. Long-term flood records in the United States show no justification for the adoption of a single type of theoretical distribution of floods. The significance and predictive values of flood-frequency relations are considered. Because of the length of flood records available and the interdependence of flood events within a region, the probable long-term average magnitudes of floods of a given recurrence interval are uncertain. However, if the magnitudes defined by the records available are accepted, the relative effects of drainage-basin characteristics and climatic variables can be determined with a reasonable degree of assurance.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1580A","usgsCitation":"Benson, M.A., 1962, Evolution of methods for evaluating the occurrence of floods: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1580, iii, 30 p. ; 24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1580A.","productDescription":"iii, 30 p. ; 24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137908,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1580a/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25630,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1580a/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49fee4b07f02db5f6e19","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Benson, M. To this end, topographic maps must show accurate classification as well as a consistent pattern of the stream network.</p><p>A recent study in Georgia has developed two photo-interpretive keys which permit accurate drainage classification during the normal stereo-compilation procedures in map-making. The study was made in the Tired Creek basin in the Coastal Plain, and in the Yellow River basin in the Piedmont Province.</p><p>In the Tired Creek basin, the perennial stream channels were associated with blackgum swamps which showed as a characteristic pattern on the aerial photographs of the area. Although the areas were classed as evergreen forest on specially-compiled vegetation maps without field checking, the classification was relatively consistent, indicating that the perennial channels could be identified accurately within the basin.</p><p>In the Yellow River basin origins of perennial flow were found in valleys having concave-upward profiles. Valleys with convex-upward profiles remained ephemeral up to their juncture with a larger stream. Field checks indicated better than 80 percent accuracy in delineating these points of origin of perennial flow through stereoscopic viewing of the aerial photographs of the area. Vegetative difference above and below the origins of perennial flow were to subtle to be readily discerned on the photographs. Errors in classifying vegetation on special maps were attributed mainly to inexperience and to faulty criteria for for classification.</p><p>Proposals are presented to improve portrayal of both drainage and vegetation on topographic maps. The proposed drainage criteria suggest portrayal of all perennial streams as well as ephemeral drainage below the first branching. The proposed vegetation criteria suggest classification of forest and shrubs, with further sub-division of distinctive patterns of vegetation easily recognized on the aerial photographs.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr62121","usgsCitation":"Schneider, W., and Goodlett, J.C., 1962, Portrayal of drainage and vegetation on topographic maps: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 62-121, 63 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr62121.","productDescription":"63 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":489702,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0121/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":178825,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0121/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4afde4b07f02db696f11","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Schneider, W.J.","contributorId":32963,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Schneider","given":"W.J.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":245074,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Goodlett, J.
