In rock weathering and soil-forming processes, the chemical composition of rainwater has an important effect which has been evaluated for only a few arid areas. In humid regions the important amounts of calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium added yearly by rain may be expected to influence the composition of the soil water and thereby the cations in the exchange positions of soil clay minerals. The acquisition of cations by clay minerals may slow down chemical weathering. The stability of soil clay minerals is influenced by the constant accession of cations from rainwater. Conversely, the clay minerals modify the amounts and kinds of cations that are leached out by drainage waters. The stability of micaceous minerals in soils may be partly due to accessions of K +1 ions from rainwater. \n\nThe pH of rainwater in any area varies considerably and seems to form a seasonal and regional pattern. Geologic mapping and stratigraphic studies indicated three \r\nfavorable areas where ground water may be developed. Test holes were drilled \r\nunder contract in the areas, and pumping tests indicate that 500,000 gpd (gal- \r\nlons per day) is available from alluvium along Tohdildonih Wash near Frog \r\nRock, 100,000 gpd is available from the Shinarump member of the Chinle forma- \r\ntion and the De Chelly sandstone near Red Lake, and 800,000 gpd is available \r\nfrom alluvium and cinder beds in lapiUi tuff in Buell Park, an eroded diatreme. \r\nThe diatreme at Buell Park is about 2% miles in diameter. It was formed \r\nby several explosions in which lapilli tuff and cinders were erupted. These \r\nmaterials, together with later basaltic intrusive and extrusive rock, now fill \r\nthe diatreme. The tuff and cinders are water bearing, 'and they receive re- \r\ncharge from rainwater and snowmelt moving through overlying alluvium and \r\nfrom storage in the De Chelly sandstone which encloses the east half of the \r\ndiatreme. \r\nThe quality of water from all areas is suitable for domestic use. An expanding population demands ever-increasing supplies of the natural resources which are to be found in or upon the landscape soil, water, minerals, food, timber, and fiber. By his works, by his extractions, man's mark upon his environment becomes ever deeper, his effects more indelible. </p><p>We often read that water tables are falling, that floods are increasing, that springs go dry more often now than in grandfather's time, or that rivers are muddier than before. Such changes, if true, are troublesome but water is a fluctuating resource, responding over time to changes in the environment. A recurring question of our times, and one that we anticipate will be increasingly vexing to posterity, is to know how much of the change in our environment is caused by man and how much is natural. In trying to answer this question we immediately face the insurmountable fact that changes must be measured relative to some standard base or datum. What can we compare against?</p><p>The most pervasive and probably the most important of the slow and subtle changes result directly or indirectly from variations in climate. Over a shorter or longer period of time, pulsations in precipitation and temperature change the amounts of water that are evaporated or transpired by the soil and vegetation, the amount of water that replenishes soil water, the quantity of water for recharge to ground water and for riverflow. Climatic variations also cause changes in the pattern of erosion, of which some spectacular consequences can be observed in the arid zones. For convenience there are also included records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, under the direction of Malcolm D. Hale, district engineer, Surface Water Branch.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This report marks the beginning of a new method of presenting, annually, basic data on surface-water records by States. Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in Indiana were contained in Parts 3A, 4 and 5 of that series.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data will be released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these basic-data reports will be limited and primarily for local needs. The records later will be published in Geological Survey water-supply papers at 5-year intervals. This range cannot be accounted for adequately by the peneplain concept. Although accordant summits, the chief evidence for peneplains, occur over large areas, summits are not accordant between adjacent areas within the valley. The Lebanon Valley is underlain in the south by carbonate rocks and in the north by shale. The major stream valley in the carbonate area is now partly occupied by segments of two streams, but at one time it was the location of one major stream -the ancestral Quittapahilla Creek-which was beheaded by a tributary to Swatara Creek. Landforms of the Lebanon Valley are probably the result of erosion within two separate stream systems-Swatara and ancestral Quittapahilla creeks-in which streams and interfluvial areas were in a state of erosional equilibrium. The land surface in equilibrium with the ancestral Quittapahilla Creek lies at a higher elevation than adjacent land surfaces that were in equilibrium with Swatara Creek. The land surface on the carbonate rocks, which is in the ancestral Quittapahilla Creek system, lies at a lower elevation than shale within the same system, but it commonly lies at a higher elevation than shale in adjacent parts of the Swatara Creek system. Accordance of summits is the result of uniform erosion of uniform rocks in basins whose discharge points are at the same elevation. Lack of accordant summits on uniform rocks is the result of erosion in basins whose discharge points differ in elevation.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of The belt is coincident with the western border zone of the middle Cretaceous&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">Idaho</span><span>&nbsp;batholith, as it extends from the west edge of the massive interior of the batholith to about the western limit of the border zone of gneisses and schists. West of this belt is the Columbia Plateau province of irregular domal and anticlinal uplifts and northwest-trending normal faults. These structures are superimposed upon east- to northeast-trending, low-grade metamorphic rocks intruded by semi-concordant stocks and small batholiths, products largely of&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">Late</span><span>&nbsp;Jurassic (?) orogeny. The&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">Idaho</span><span>&nbsp;batholith has been little deformed, and its border-zone rocks of intermediate competence are broken by concordant structures. Young structures cut directly across the relatively incompetent rocks of the older orogen to the west. These tilted blocks contain Late Cretaceous to late Oligocene rocks and are unconformably overlain by nearly horizontal strata of the Arikaree Formation of Miocene age. Undisturbed rocks of late Oligocene age were completely stripped from the area by pre-Arikaree erosion.</p><p>More than 100 landslide blocks are preserved in the Slim Buttes, Harding County, South Dakota. Some of the blocks are several miles long, 600 feet wide, and contain a thickness of 300 feet or more of relatively unbroken or unjumbled strata which have been displaced downward as much as 250 feet. The strike of the tilted blocks is about N. 60° W., and the dip of the bedding in the blocks at most places is to the southwest and ranges from a few to more than 60°. Most of the rock in the blocks consists of coarse arkosic sandstone, tuffaceous siltstone, claystone, and thick beds of bentonite of the Chadron and Brule formations of Oligocene age. In a few places, small sections of the underlying Paleocene strata are tilted. The blocks formed along northwest-trendingpre-Arikaree valley walls and escarpments. The major joint system of underlying rocks apparently controlled the orientation of the slides, and the dip of these older rocks facilitated the downward and outward movement of the landslide blocks.</p><p>The Short Pine Hills, Harding County, South Dakota, and the Long Pine Hills, Carter County, Montana, contain numerous landslide blocks that are similar in orientation and geologic setting to those of the Slim Buttes. In contrast, the Finger Buttes of Carter County, Montana, contain landslide blocks that strike about N. 70° E. and dip to the southeast. This lack of parallelism with blocks of nearby areas is apparently due to the lack of a well-developed joint system in underlying rocks of this area.</p><p>The presence of the complete sequence of Oligocene rocks in the downdropped blocks indicates that before pre-Arikaree erosion the area was covered by 500 feet or more of beds of the Chadron and Brule formations.
