Results include the following: water levels and artesian pressures can be maintained at high stages, the results are lower pumping lifts and substantial reductions in the amount of power used for pumping; the high water levels permit increased rates of withdrawal during periods of peak demand; encroachment of poor quality water from other aquifers is minimized; the surface water induced into the aquifer is filtered naturally through great thicknesses of earth materials; natural underground storage is used to conserve and protect water, which otherwise would flow largely to waste; and, significant supplemental benefits, including flood control, have been derived. The tests demonstrated that it is possible to manipulate the regimen of a complex hydrologic system for definite hydraulic benefits with predictable results. Furthermore with current methods, quantitative evaluations may be made of the effects of induced recharge. The results of the tests, therefore, are applicable in other areas of similar hydrogeologic environments.
","language":"English","publisher":"American Water Works Association","publisherLocation":"New York, NY","doi":"10.1002/j.1551-8833.1962.tb00831.x","usgsCitation":"Deutsch, M., 1962, Controlled induced recharge tests at Kalamazoo, Mich: Journal - American Water Works Association, v. 54, no. 2, p. 181-196, https://doi.org/10.1002/j.1551-8833.1962.tb00831.x.","productDescription":"16 p.","startPage":"181","endPage":"196","numberOfPages":"16","costCenters":[{"id":382,"text":"Michigan Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":328865,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Michigan","city":"Kalamazoo","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -85.84304809570312,\n              42.09312731992276\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.84304809570312,\n              42.416359972082866\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.34042358398438,\n              42.416359972082866\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.34042358398438,\n              42.09312731992276\n            ],\n            [\n              -85.84304809570312,\n              42.09312731992276\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"54","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"57ffcff4e4b0824b2d17619a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Deutsch, Morris","contributorId":69119,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Deutsch","given":"Morris","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":649336,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Sphalerite, pyrite, and, locally, pyrrhotite and galena have replaced the carbonate minerals in parts of the marble units. The contacts between ore and marble are, in general, ill-defined; scattered grains of sulfides are present from several inches to hundreds of feet from the massive portions of ore. Access to the ore is provided through the Balmat No. 2 and No. 3 mines. The isotopic composition of lead from primary galena is uniform within an individual mine. The model age of this lead agrees with the age of the mineralization determined by other means - about a billion years. The isotopic composition of the leads in the marble is not uniform today, and calculations indicate that it was probably not uniform a billion years ago. Unless the lead in the ores is a uniform mixture of lead isotopes from an isotopically poorly mixed source, it is doubtful that the lead in the ores was derived from the surrounding marbles. Cobalt and nickel concentrations in pyrite from grains disseminated in the metasedimentary rocks away from the ore bodies are each greater than 200 ppm. Most samples of pyrite from the ore bodies at the No. 2 and No. 3 mines contain less than 50 ppm each of cobalt and nickel. Therefore the author believes it unlikely that the pyrite of the ores is genetically related to the pyrite in the metasedimentary rocks. Textural relationships suggest that pyrrhotite formed after most of the sphalerite, which in turn formed after most of the pyrite in the ore bodies. By use of the experimentally determined systems FeS-ZnS and FeS-FeS2, it is inferred from the amounts of iron in sphalerite and sulfur in pyrrhotite that the bulk of the sulfide minerals in the No. 2 mine formed above 320° C. The absolute temperature of formation of pyrrhotite indicated by the FeS-ZnS system is about 150° higher than that indicated by the FeS-FeS2 system. The former system probably gives the more reliable estimate. The concentrations of individual minor elements in sphalerite and pyrite range considerably among specimens of the same sulfide mineral from the same level and ore body. An exception is cadmium in sphalerite which has a narrow concentration range around 1400 ppm in both the No. 2 and No. 3 mines. The ratio of the concentrations of minor elements between sphalerite-pyrite pairs varies considerably also. This variation probably indicates that exchange of minor elements between pyrite and sphalerite durin g the formation of the ores was very slow and incomplete.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1962)73[833:DACOSM]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Doe, B.R., 1962, Distribution and composition of sulfide minerals at Balmat, New York: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 73, no. 7, p. 833-854, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1962)73[833:DACOSM]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"22 p.","startPage":"833","endPage":"854","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":480372,"rank":0,"type":{"id":41,"text":"Open Access External Repository Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.7907/y53k-nc70","text":"External Repository"},{"id":385944,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United  States","state":"New York","city":"Gouverneur","otherGeospatial":"Balmat","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -75.53787231445312,\n              44.213709909702054\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.399169921875,\n              44.213709909702054\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.399169921875,\n              44.37785821716272\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.53787231445312,\n              44.37785821716272\n            ],\n            [\n              -75.53787231445312,\n              44.213709909702054\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"73","issue":"7","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Doe, Bruce R.","contributorId":87554,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Doe","given":"Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":816455,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Because of the ambiguity inherent in magnetic interpretation, a unique solution for the parameters involved (depth of burial, geometric configuration, and magnetic susceptibility of the mass producing the anomaly) is impossible. However, if one of the parameters is known it is sometimes possible to indicate a range of plausible values for each of the remaining parameters. The depth to the surface of the Precambrian rocks in Randolph County is known from drill-hole data to be about 3,000 ft. As the depth of burial is known, limits need be set only on the thickness, angle of dip, and susceptibility contrast of the assumed dike. These limits are determined by a graphical method. Theoretical anomalies over the postulated dike are computed for different dike thicknesses, angles of dip, and susceptibility contrasts. The computed profiles are then fitted to an observed magnetic profile flown at right angles to the trend of the feature. Numerical values for the \"goodness of fit\" are calculated by using the statistical method of sums of squares. Two plots, one of the index of goodness of fit and the other of susceptibility as functions of dip angle and dike thickness, are made to show graphically the interdependence of the variables and the plausible range of each. The contoured plots of the goodness of fit and the susceptibility contrast show that the range of best fit is between dip angles of 30 and 60 degrees and dike thickness of 1,000 to over 4,000 ft. The contoured plot of the susceptibility contrast, translated into percentage of magnetite, shows this parameter to be independent of the dip angle, varying only with thickness.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Exploration Geophysicists","doi":"10.1190/1.1439104","usgsCitation":"Andreasen, G.E., and Zietz, I., 1962, Limiting parameters in the magnetic interpretation of a geologic structure: Geophysics, v. 27, no. 6, p. 807-814, https://doi.org/10.1190/1.1439104.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"807","endPage":"814","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":385945,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Indiana","otherGeospatial":"Randolph County","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -85.23056030273438,\n 40.01499435375046\n ],\n [\n -84.79934692382812,\n 40.01499435375046\n ],\n [\n -84.79934692382812,\n 40.310948849735\n ],\n [\n -85.23056030273438,\n 40.310948849735\n ],\n [\n -85.23056030273438,\n 40.01499435375046\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"27","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Andreasen, G. The Belt Series rocks have furnished the xenoliths in the batholith. To the west upper Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata are invaded. Along the eastern margin, south of lat. 45°, thick Paleozoic strata are intruded by the batholith. These locally exceed 30,000 feet in thickness and thin eastward. They have many variations. Those close to the batholith, especially those high in the sequence, are regarded as of near-shore origin. The Paleozoic strata in southeastern Idaho, more than 17,000 feet thick, are broadly similar except that Cambrian strata there are thicker and more widespread. The part of central Idaho north of the vicinity of lat. 45° has no known Paleozoic strata. Northern Idaho has only a few outcrops of beds of Cambrian age. The differences in thickness and character between Paleozoic strata in south-central and southeastern Idaho and those in western Montana and Wyoming (less than 7500 feet thick) suggest a hinge line near the eastern boundary between Idaho and Montana with a shelf to the east and a trough to the west. In south-central Idaho this trough had a maximum width of 90 miles and a western shore roughly at the east margin of the batholith. This trough wedged out northward a little beyond lat. 45°. Thus the area of the present Idaho batholith has been a positive block since Precambrian time, comparable to but apparently of longer duration than the geanticline in northern Nevada. Any invasion of the positive block in Idaho by marine waters during the Paleozoic was local and brief, except perhaps along the western border. Uncertain correlations within the area of the batholith leave open the possibility of some deposition there early in Paleozoic time.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1962)73[769:PSOCI]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Ross, C.P., 1962, Paleozoic seas of central Idaho: Geological Society of America Bulletin, v. 73, no. 6, p. 769-793, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1962)73[769:PSOCI]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"25 p.","startPage":"769","endPage":"793","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":385940,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United  States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"western-central Idaho","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -117.24609374999999,\n              43.26120612479979\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.5654296875,\n              43.26120612479979\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.5654296875,\n              45.398449976304086\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.24609374999999,\n              45.398449976304086\n            ],\n            [\n              -117.24609374999999,\n              43.26120612479979\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","volume":"73","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Ross, Clyde P.","contributorId":10473,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Ross","given":"Clyde","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":816449,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

These tilted blocks contain Late Cretaceous to late Oligocene rocks and are unconformably overlain by nearly horizontal strata of the Arikaree Formation of Miocene age. Undisturbed rocks of late Oligocene age were completely stripped from the area by pre-Arikaree erosion. More than 100 landslide blocks are preserved in the Slim Buttes, Harding County, South Dakota. Some of the blocks are several miles long, 600 feet wide, and contain a thickness of 300 feet or more of relatively unbroken or unjumbled strata which have been displaced downward as much as 250 feet. The strike of the tilted blocks is about N. 60° W., and the dip of the bedding in the blocks at most places is to the southwest and ranges from a few to more than 60°. Most of the rock in the blocks consists of coarse arkosic sandstone, tuffaceous siltstone, claystone, and thick beds of bentonite of the Chadron and Brule formations of Oligocene age. In a few places, small sections of the underlying Paleocene strata are tilted. The blocks formed along northwest-trendingpre-Arikaree valley walls and escarpments. The major joint system of underlying rocks apparently controlled the orientation of the slides, and the dip of these older rocks facilitated the downward and outward movement of the landslide blocks. The Short Pine Hills, Harding County, South Dakota, and the Long Pine Hills, Carter County, Montana, contain numerous landslide blocks that are similar in orientation and geologic setting to those of the Slim Buttes. In contrast, the Finger Buttes of Carter County, Montana, contain landslide blocks that strike about N. 70° E. and dip to the southeast. This lack of parallelism with blocks of nearby areas is apparently due to the lack of a well-developed joint system in underlying rocks of this area. The presence of the complete sequence of Oligocene rocks in the downdropped blocks indicates that before pre-Arikaree erosion the area was covered by 500 feet or more of beds of the Chadron and Brule formations. Although several hatchery-propagated centrarchids are susceptible, the bluegill (Lepomis macrochirus) is the host of choice because it is most easily maintained. At 12.5° the disease was transmitted by implantation and by injection, but there was no evidence of fish-to-fish spread, nor seasonal change in host susceptibility. The infective agent was clearly demonstrated to be filterable (Millipore HA). It retained infectivity in storage at −20° for almost two years, and its viability after desiccation was confirmed. These facts support its postulated viral nature. The virus was glycerol- and ether-sensitive and did not induce formation of giant lymphocystis cells in monolayer cultures of bluegill ovary cells.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0042-6822(62)90011-9","usgsCitation":"Wolf, K., 1962, Experimental propagation of lymphocystis disease of fishes: Virology, v. 18, no. 2, p. 249-256, https://doi.org/10.1016/0042-6822(62)90011-9.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"249","endPage":"256","costCenters":[{"id":365,"text":"Leetown Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131730,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"18","issue":"2","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a14e4b07f02db60244f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wolf, K.","contributorId":16344,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Wolf","given":"K.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":320453,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The temperature coefficient used to adjust conductivity of natural waters to a given temperature varies depending on the kinds and concentrations of electrolytes, the temperature at the time of measurement, and the temperature to which measurements are being adjusted.  The temperature coefficient was found to differ for various lake and stream waters, and showed seasonal changes. High precision can be obtained only by determining temperature coefficients for each water studied.  Mean temperature coefficients are given for various temperature ranges that may be used where less precision is required.","language":"English","publisher":"Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography","doi":"10.4319/lo.1962.7.3.0330","usgsCitation":"Smith, S.H., 1962, Temperature correction in conductivity measurements: Limnology and Oceanography, v. 7, no. 3, p. 330-334, https://doi.org/10.4319/lo.1962.7.3.0330.","productDescription":"5 p.","startPage":"330","endPage":"334","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":486857,"rank":2,"type":{"id":40,"text":"Open Access Publisher Index Page"},"url":"https://doi.org/10.4319/lo.1962.7.3.0330","text":"Publisher Index Page"},{"id":133095,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"7","issue":"3","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationDate":"2003-12-22","publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adae4b07f02db685741","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Smith, Stanford H.","contributorId":86711,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Stanford","email":"","middleInitial":"H.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308482,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
