The identification and delineation of the provinces were based on the regional distribution of the dominant geologic units which are known or inferred to have distinctive water-bearing characteristics. \r\n\r\nThree of the provinces, covering most of the country, are underlain by Precambrian crystalline rocks. Three others coincide in part with four extensive sedimentary basins--the Parnaiba or Maranhfio basin and the contiguous Sao Francisco basin in the northeast and east, the Amazon basin in the north and northwest, and the Paranfi basin in the south and southwest. In addition, the narrow, discontinuous coastal plain is considered as a province. the occurrence of ground water is discussed briefly, and pertinent data are given on the more important aquifers, together with information on some existing wells. Because of the widespread distribution of crystalline rocks of low permeability, it is difficult in many areas to develop large or even adequate ground-water supplies. In general, satisfactory supplies of water are available in most of the rest of the country. Some problems include the relative deficiency of rainfall in the northeast together with the occurrence, in parts of this region, of mineralized water in the crystalline rocks. ,{"id":3197,"text":"wsp1544B - 1962 - An application of thermometry to the study of ground water","interactions":[],"lastModifiedDate":"2018-04-02T10:17:13","indexId":"wsp1544B","displayToPublicDate":"1994-01-01T00:00:00","publicationYear":"1962","noYear":false,"publicationType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"publicationSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"seriesTitle":{"id":341,"text":"Water Supply Paper","code":"WSP","active":false,"publicationSubtype":{"id":5}},"seriesNumber":"1544","chapter":"B","title":"An application of thermometry to the study of ground water","docAbstract":"<p>Except for studies of temperature data related to ground-water developments that induce infiltration from streams, little attention has been given to the possibility of using temperature fluctuations as a tool for studying the elements of the hydrologic cycle involving ground water.</p>\n<p>The temperature of the water discharged from large installations that induce river infiltration through alluvial deposits depends primarily on the following factors: (a) the porosity of the aquifer, (b) the specific heat of the rocks or mineral grains making it up, (c) the temperature of the ground water in storage, (d) the temperature of the river water, and (e) the amount of mixing that occurs as a result of pumping. In six installations of this type, where the annual rivertemperature fluctuations ranged from 44&deg; to 52&deg;F, the average range in groundwater temperature was 22 &deg;F. The cycles of ground-water temperature lagged behind the river-temperature cycles by 1 to 5<sup>1</sup>/<sub>2</sub> months. Under the conditions that existed, the lag of the minima of the cycles was much greater than that of the maxima, largely because of variations in pumpage and of the effect of viscosity differences on the rate of flow.</p>\n<p>An experimental study was made at Worthington in southwestern Minnesota to determine whether temperature fluctuations could be used to study rates and directions of ground-water movement or to evaluate recharge conditions. Three shallow glacial-outwash aquifers were studied by measuring temperatures at approximately monthly intervals in three municipal-supply wells whose average yields were about 60 to 150 gpm (gallons per minute). Temperatures were read with an accuracy of 0.01&deg; to 0.02&deg;C, and the data were analyzed graphically and correlated in detail with lake levels, lake temperatures, precipitation, and groundwater levels.</p>\n<p>Thermographs for 2 wells, 1 completed in a semiconfined aquifer about 200 feet from Okabena Lake and the other in a water-table aquifer about 850 feet from the lake, indicate that pumping induces water to move from the lake into the aquifers. A larger percentage of cold lake water was mixed with ground water from January to March 1958 than from January to March 1959. On the assumption that the cold or warm lake water was a distinct mass, the average time required for water to move from the lake to the well 200 feet away, under the prevailing hydraulic gradient, was 2 to 4 months; and to the well 850 feet away, 5 to 7 months.</p>\n<p>The thermograph for a well 1,800 feet from the lake, completed in an artesian aquifer that is confined by relatively impervious glacial till, indicates that the till acts as an insulating medium. However, despite the apparently low permeability of the till, the thermograph suggests that the lowering of artesian pressure, which results from pumping, induces warmer water to move downward through the till.</p>\n<p>The infiltration of relatively warm spring and summer rainfall can be detected on the thermographs of all the wells.</p>\n<p>The precise measurement of fluctuations in ground-water temperature, based on monthly readings in shallow glacial-outwash aquifers (up to about 70 feet deep), is useful in the study of ground-water movement and recharge. Some of the peak discharges have recurrence intervals greater than a hundred years. \r\n\r\nThe floods resulted from an unusual combination of conditions, each of which contributed to the sudden severe flooding. These conditions were an extended period of above-freezing temperatures and prolonged light rainfall, an extensive area of snow at low altitudes, and deeply frozen ground, The snow at higher altitudes did not contribute to the floods. \r\n\r\nRunoff was greatest from watersheds at altitudes ranging from 4,500 to 6,500 feet. Flooding from small tributaries with large parts of their drainage within this range rank among the highest snowmelt floods ever recorded in Idaho and northeastern Nevada. The Snake River main stem had only minor flooding. \r\n\r\nThe flood damage was the greatest ever experienced in most of the flood area because of the large areas inundated and because the value and amount of improvements has increased steadily. The monument is about 35 miles southeast of Wilicox in the north end of the Chiricahua Mountains which border Sulphur Springs Valley on the west. The area is drained by two intermittent washes, one in Bonita and the other in Rhyolite Canyons.\r\n\r\nShake Spring is the present source of water for the monument. Geologic mapping and stratigraphic studies indicated three \r\nfavorable areas where ground water may be developed. Test holes were drilled \r\nunder contract in the areas, and pumping tests indicate that 500,000 gpd (gal- \r\nlons per day) is available from alluvium along Tohdildonih Wash near Frog \r\nRock, 100,000 gpd is available from the Shinarump member of the Chinle forma- \r\ntion and the De Chelly sandstone near Red Lake, and 800,000 gpd is available \r\nfrom alluvium and cinder beds in lapiUi tuff in Buell Park, an eroded diatreme. \r\nThe diatreme at Buell Park is about 2% miles in diameter. It was formed \r\nby several explosions in which lapilli tuff and cinders were erupted. These \r\nmaterials, together with later basaltic intrusive and extrusive rock, now fill \r\nthe diatreme. The tuff and cinders are water bearing, 'and they receive re- \r\ncharge from rainwater and snowmelt moving through overlying alluvium and \r\nfrom storage in the De Chelly sandstone which encloses the east half of the \r\ndiatreme. \r\nThe quality of water from all areas is suitable for domestic use. Water was diverted from 1 of the city's 3 production wells and released into an infiltration ditch near the municipal well field. \r\n\r\nAlthough slightly more than 65,000 cubic feet of water (nearly 500,000 gallons ) was spread in the infiltration ditch and allowed to seep into the subsurface, there was no indication that any appreciable amount of water reached the producing aquifer. Instead, a perched zone of saturation was created by the presence of an impermeable or slightly permeable bed above the water table. So effective is this barrier to the downward movement of water that within a period of less than 1 day, the apex of the perched zone rose about 10 feet to the level of the bottom of the infiltration ditch. As more water was added, the mound of saturation spread laterally. \r\n\r\nOn the basis of these experiments, it appears that the principal aquifer at Newark, Del., would not be benefited by spreading water in shallow infiltration ditches or basins. However, the absorptive capacity of the unsaturated materials which occur at a shallow depth, is sufficient to permit the disposal of large volumes of storm runoff.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. As field experience increased, confidence in the applicability of quantitative methods was gained and interest in developing solutions for more complex hydrologic problems was stimulated. An important milestone was Theis' development in 1935 of a solution for the nonsteady flow of ground water, which enabled hydrologists for the first time to predict future changes in ground-water levels resulting from pumping or recharging of wells. In the quarter century since, quantitative ground-water hydrology has been enlarging so rapidly as to discourage the preparation of comprehensive textbooks. \r\n\r\nThis report surveys developments in fluid mechanics that apply to groundwater hydrology. It emphasizes concepts and principles, and the delineation of limits of applicability of mathematical models for analysis of flow systems in the field. It stresses the importance of the geologic variable and its role in governing the flow regimen. \r\n\r\nThe report discusses the origin, occurrence, and motion of underground water in relation to the development of terminology and analytic expressions for selected flow systems. It is underlain by Cretaceous and Pleistocene unconsolidated deposits resting on a southeastward-sloping Precambrian bedrock surface. The island's fresh ground-water reservoir is contained in stratified upper Pleistocene glacial deposits and probably assumes the shape of a shallow lens, in accordance with the Ghyben-Herzberg principle. Precipitation is the only source of recharge to this reservoir, but it is more than sufficient to replenish the fresh-water draft.' This draft was about 31 million gallons in 1958. The well field of the Department of Agriculture probably has been contaminated slightly by sea water during the past few years--possibly as a result of the hurricanes of 1954 and 1955, by vertical encroachment of sea water, or both. The most abundant \r\nrocks in the district are interlayered mica and amphibole gneisses and schists, all of which are believed to be of Precambrian age. These rocks are cut by small bodies of dunite and associated rocks of Precambrian (?) age, large bodies of alaskite and associated pegmatite of early Paleozoic age, and basaltic and diabasic dikes and sills of Triassic (?) age. The rocks of the district have been weathered to saprolite that is locally 50 feet thick.\r\n\r\nThe major structure in the area is a southwestward-plunging asymmetrical \r\nsynclinorium that has its steeper limb on the northwest side.\r\n\r\nFeldspar, muscovite as sheet and scrap (ground) mica, and kaolin from the \r\nalaskite and associated pegmatite account for over 90 percent of the total \r\nmineral production of the district. Amounts of other pegmatite minerals, \r\nincluding quartz, beryl, columbite-tantalite, rare-earth and uranium minerals \r\nare an extremely small part of the mineral resources. Other aquifers include dolomite of Ordovician age and sand. and gravel of Quaternary age. Crystalline rocks of Precambrian age, which underlie all the water-bearing formations, form a practically impermeable basement complex and yield little or no water to wells. Ground water is the source of all public and most private and industrial water supplies in the county. The municipalities and industries obtain water chiefly from wells that penetrate the sandstones of Cambrian and Ordorician age. The Platteville formation and Galena dolomite of Ordovician age and the Niagara dolomite of Silurian age supply water to most domestic and stock wells and to a few industrial wells. Several buried valleys in the bedrock surface contain water-bearing deposits of sand and gravel. The source of the ground water in Fond du Lac County is local precipitation. Recharge to the water-bearing beds occurs in most of the county but is greatest where the bedrock formations are near the surface. Ground water is discharged by seeps and springs, by evaporation and transpiration, and by wells. Ground-water levels in wells fluctuate in response to recharge and to natural discharge and pumping. In areas not affected by pumping, water levels generally decline through the summer months because of natural discharge and lack of recharge, recover slightly in the fall after the first killing frost, decline during the winter, and recover in the spring when recharge is greatest. In areas of heavy pumping, the water levels are lowest in late summer and highest in late winter. Water levels in wells in the Fond du Lac area were about 5 to 50 feet above the land surface in 1885, but they had declined to as low as 185 feet below the land surface by 1957. Coefficients of transmissibility and storage of the sandstones of Cambrian and Ordovician age were determined by making controlled aquifer tests at Fond du Lac. The coefficients were verified by comparing computed water-level declines with actual declines. The computed values were within about 30 percent of the actual values, a reasonable agreement for coefficients of this type. Probable declines of water levels by 1966 were computed, using the same coefficients of transmissibility and storage. If the distribution of wells and the rate of pumping remain the same in 1957-66 as they were in 1956, the water levels will decline about 5 feet more by 1966. If, however, the distribution of pumped wells remains the same but the pumping by the city of Fond du Lac increases at a uniform rate from the 3 mgd (million gallons per day) pumped in 1956 to 5 mgd in 1966, the water levels in 1966 will be at least 60 feet below those of 1956. Dispersal of wells to the northwest toward the recharge area would reduce the water-level declines. The results of pumping tests, of test holes tapping the Niagara dolomite indicate that wells producing at least 200 gpm (gallons per minute) could be developed east of the Niagara escarpment.
