In compiling the map, the estimated total quantity of copper present before mining was used to assign districts to size categories, and both production and reserves are included without distinction as to the status of exploitation. Four categories have been distinguished: deposits that contain 50+ to 1,000 tons; 1,000 to 50,000 tons; 50,000 to 1 million tons; and over 1 million tons of copper respectively. In many of the smaller deposits copper occurs with other metals, as gold, silver; lead, or zinc, that may be quantitatively and economically more important than the contained copper. Thus, for example, a deposit that contains large values in gold or zinc may contain only a small amount of copper and is shown on this map as a small copper deposit.

Five principal morphologic types of deposits have been distinguished on the map by letter symbols. These are disseminated, replacement, vein, massive sulfide, and native copper deposits (see Explanation). They are not strictly genetic types, however, for the disseminated deposits, the massive sulfide deposits, and many of the vein deposits were formed largely or entirely by replacement processes.

The symbols show either individual mines or the approximate centers of districts. Some of the more prominent districts are identified by name on the map, and all with over 1,000 tons of copper are numbered to correspond to the Locality Index. As mining district names do not always correspond to locality names, and a name established through common usage may not be the legal name of the mining district, several names are given in the index for some localities. The index is arranged alphabetically by States. Both published and unpublished data were used, and at least one reference is given for each locality if reports on it have been published.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/mr13","usgsCitation":"Kinkel, A.R., and Peterson, N.P., 1962, Copper in the United States, exclusive of Alaska and Hawaii: U.S. Geological Survey Mineral Investigations Resource Map 13, Report: 15 p.; 1 Plate: 64.20 x 42.00 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/mr13.","productDescription":"Report: 15 p.; 1 Plate: 64.20 x 42.00 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":485338,"rank":3,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mr/13/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":260477,"rank":2,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mr/13/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":180103,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/mr/13/report-thumb.jpg"}],"scale":"3168000","country":"United States","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -127.25,24.25 ], [ -127.25,49.25 ], [ -66.5,49.25 ], [ -66.5,24.25 ], [ -127.25,24.25 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db685bf3","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Kinkel, Arthur R. Geologic mapping and stratigraphic studies indicated three \r\nfavorable areas where ground water may be developed. Test holes were drilled \r\nunder contract in the areas, and pumping tests indicate that 500,000 gpd (gal- \r\nlons per day) is available from alluvium along Tohdildonih Wash near Frog \r\nRock, 100,000 gpd is available from the Shinarump member of the Chinle forma- \r\ntion and the De Chelly sandstone near Red Lake, and 800,000 gpd is available \r\nfrom alluvium and cinder beds in lapiUi tuff in Buell Park, an eroded diatreme. \r\nThe diatreme at Buell Park is about 2% miles in diameter. It was formed \r\nby several explosions in which lapilli tuff and cinders were erupted. These \r\nmaterials, together with later basaltic intrusive and extrusive rock, now fill \r\nthe diatreme. The tuff and cinders are water bearing, 'and they receive re- \r\ncharge from rainwater and snowmelt moving through overlying alluvium and \r\nfrom storage in the De Chelly sandstone which encloses the east half of the \r\ndiatreme. \r\nThe quality of water from all areas is suitable for domestic use. However, \r\nspecial treatment may be necessary to make the water suitable for pulp \r\nprocessing.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1576B","usgsCitation":"Akers, J.P., McClymonds, N.E., and Harshbarger, J.W., 1962, Geology and ground water of the Red Lake area, Navajo Indian Reservation, Arizona and New Mexico: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1576, iii, 12 p. :map ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1576B.","productDescription":"iii, 12 p. :map ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":138034,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1576b/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":25403,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1576b/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":25404,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1576b/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4adbe4b07f02db68615f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Akers, J. In rock weathering and soil-forming processes, the chemical composition of rainwater has an important effect which has been evaluated for only a few arid areas. In humid regions the important amounts of calcium, magnesium, sodium, and potassium added yearly by rain may be expected to influence the composition of the soil water and thereby the cations in the exchange positions of soil clay minerals. The acquisition of cations by clay minerals may slow down chemical weathering. The stability of soil clay minerals is influenced by the constant accession of cations from rainwater. Conversely, the clay minerals modify the amounts and kinds of cations that are leached out by drainage waters. The stability of micaceous minerals in soils may be partly due to accessions of K +1 ions from rainwater. \n\nThe pH of rainwater in any area varies considerably and seems to form a seasonal and regional pattern. The recorded pH values range from 3.0 to 9.8.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Print. As field experience increased, confidence in the applicability of quantitative methods was gained and interest in developing solutions for more complex hydrologic problems was stimulated. An important milestone was Theis' development in 1935 of a solution for the nonsteady flow of ground water, which enabled hydrologists for the first time to predict future changes in ground-water levels resulting from pumping or recharging of wells. In the quarter century since, quantitative ground-water hydrology has been enlarging so rapidly as to discourage the preparation of comprehensive textbooks. \r\n\r\nThis report surveys developments in fluid mechanics that apply to groundwater hydrology. It emphasizes concepts and principles, and the delineation of limits of applicability of mathematical models for analysis of flow systems in the field. It stresses the importance of the geologic variable and its role in governing the flow regimen. \r\n\r\nThe report discusses the origin, occurrence, and motion of underground water in relation to the development of terminology and analytic expressions for selected flow systems. It describes the underlying assumptions necessary for mathematical treatment of these flow systems, with particular reference to the way in which the assumptions limit the validity of the treatment.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Government Print.
