The recent drought is one of several which have been recorded in the arid Southwest in the past century. In regions where precipitation comes chiefly from a single source, as in California and the Great Plains, prevailingly dry periods have alternated with wetter periods, each lasting 10 to 15 years. In the intervening area that includes the basins of the Colorado River and Rio Grande and numerous basins of interior drainage, a deficiency from one source may be ameliorated in some localities by precipitation from another source; in other areas all sources have failed and the drought has continued for a quarter of a century. Earlier droughts of similar duration, and some of longer period, are indicated by historic records and by studies of tree rings, lake levels, and archeologic data.

Because the area is semiarid, virtually all crops require irrigation. Surface-water supplies are inadequate in most of the area, and ground water is being used increasingly for irrigation. The purpose of this investigation was the collection and interpretation of data, pertaining to ground water in the area as an aid in the proper development and management of the water resources. \r\n\r\nThe occurrence and movement of ground water in the Ahtanum Valley are directly related to the geology. The valley occupies part of a structural trough (Ahtanum-Moxee subbasin) that is underlain by strongly folded flow layers of a thick sequence of the Yakima basalt. The upper part of the basalt sequence interfingers with, and is conformably overlying by, sedimentary rocks of the Ellensburg formation which are as much as 1,000 feet thick. These rocks are in turn overlying unconformably by cemented basalt gravel as much as 400 feet thick. Unconsolidated alluvial sand and gravel, as much as 30 feet thick, form the valley floor. \r\n\r\nAlthough ground water occurs in each of the rock units within the area, the Yakima basalt and the unconsolidated alluvium yield about three-fourths of the ground water currently used. Wells in the area range in depth from a few feet to more than 1,200 feet and yield from less than 1 to more than 1,030 gallons per minute. \r\n\r\nAlthough water levels in water-table wells usually are shallow--often less than 5 feet below the land surface--levels in deeper wells tapping confined water range from somewhat above the land surface (in flowing wells) to about 200 feet below. Wells drilled into aquifers in the Yakima basalt, the Ellensburg formation, and the cemented gravel usually tap confined water, and at least 12 wells in the area flow or have flowed in the past. Ground-water levels fluctuate principally in response to changes in stream levels, variations in the flow of irrigation ditches and in rates of water application, variations in local precipitation, and seasonal differences in withdrawals from wells. Annual fluctuations of levels generally are less than 10 feet except in localities of heavy pumping. Periodic measurements of water levels in two observation wells in the area indicate, locally at least, a persistent decline in artesian pressures in confined basalt aquifers, although the record is too short to show whether withdrawal by pumping has \r\nreached, or is nearing, an optimum balance with recharge. \r\n\r\nThe aquifers are recharged by precipitation, by infiltration from streams, and by ground-water underflow into the area. Ground water is discharged by seepage to streams, by evapotranspiration, by springs and seeps at the land surface, and, artificially, by withdrawal from wells. It is estimated that the seepage discharge to the Yakima River from the area studied may range from about 20,000 to 25,000 acre-feet per year. The consumptive waste of ground water by phreatophytes probably exceeds 4,000 acre-feet per year and may represent a large reclaimable source of water in the area. The annual withdrawal of ground water from wells in the area for domestic, industrial, irrigation, public, and stock supplies is estimated to be 6,300 acre-feet. The beryllium is associated with altered dikes and marmorized limestone veined with fluorite-tourmaline-chrysoberyl veinlets. Although the chrysoberyl is fine grained and intergrown intricately with the fluorite and tourmaline, it has been separated and identified by X-ray diffraction. Specimens of ore selected randomly from areas of fluoritized limestone contain beryllium in the range .01 to 3.3 percent BeO. The area warrants detailed mapping and sampling, which will be done by the U.S. Geological Survey in 1962.

The outcropping rocks are the Idavada Volcanics of Pliocene age, and the Idaho Group of Pliocene and Plieistocene age, consisting of the Banbury Basalt of middle Pliocene age and overlying predominantly sedimentary deposits of middle Pliocene through middle Pleistocene age. These rocks dip gently northward. The volcanic rocks are the best aquifers, but the yield of water from the sedimentary deposits is adequate for domestic and stock use. About 6,000 acre-feet of water is withdrawn annually from the Idavada Volcanics by 9 irrigation wells to irrigate about 3,000 acres. Only a few tends of acre-feet of water withdrawn from the other formations. The regional dip of the rocks induces weak artesian conditions in the volcanic rocks and somewhat higher artesian head in the sedimentary rocks. Estimated depth to water ranges from less than 250 feet to more than 750 feet, as shown in an accompanying map. Because many of them contain ponds or marshes, they are important in the production of livestock and waterfowl. The objective of the present investigation is to determine the amount of water that accumulates in and is used in the potholes in their natural environment.
Two study areas were selected in North Dakota, and construction of gaging facilities was completed in 1960. Each study area contains four potholes. Three of the potholes for each area contain dense growths of aquatic vegetation, and one is clear of aquatic vegetation. The instruments to provide the basic data for computing water losses include: water-stage recorder, water-temperature recorder, rain gage, anemometer, and hygrothermograph. Observations will also be made of ground-water levels, rate of growth and type of vegetation, and quality of water.

In compiling the map the deposits were classified into two categories: 1) those that have produced bismuth or are regarded as potential sources based on available information (in general, this category includes the minable base- and precious-metal depos its whose ores or concentrates are reported to contain at least 0.02 percent bismuth); and 2) deposits that have been reported to contain bismuth but which are either unappraised or are regarded as having no potential importance as sources of the metal.
The map also shows by stipple pattern various segments of the southern Piedmont gold belt, which extends from northern Virginia southwestward to Alabama. Numerous gold deposits within this belt contain very minor quantities of bismuth and are, therefore, of general interest.
Each deposit or group of deposits is numbered on the map by state and identified in the index. The index gives the name of each locality, the coordinates to the nearest minute of latitude and longitude, the principal metals in the ore, a very brief geologic description, and references to published reports if any. Both published and unpublished data have been used in compiling this map.
