From 1954-57 uranium and radium concentrations were determined in 561 samples, mainly of ground water, having wide geologic and geographic distribution. These concentrations, together with data on the hydrologic and geologic environment, the beta-gamma activity, and the chemical characteristics of each sample, are tabulated by States.</p><p>The conterminous United States was subdivided into 10 geotectonic regions to facilitate statistical interpretation of the occurrence of uranium and radium in fresh water in approximately homogeneous geologic provinces. For each geotectonic region, the range and median were determined for the concentrations of radium and uranium; for regions from which sufficient data were available, log-normal frequency distribution curves were calculated and superimposed on histograms of radium and uranium concentrations in the samples. An \"anomaly threshold\" is suggested for both radioelements for each region analyzed statistically. The western stable region had the greatest median and highest \"anomaly threshold\" for uranium. This region also had the highest \"anomaly threshold\" for radium, but the largest median for radium was found for samples collected in the Ozark-Ouachita system. The median concentration for uranium was lowest for the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plain and the Pacific orogenic belt. Because of the numerous factors involved in determining the amount and purity of the calcium sulfate present in each deposit, no attempt was made to rank the deposits according to size. Suspended-sediment concentrations and discharges for most of the streams were somewhat lower than would be expected during similar water discharges that might result from torrential rains rather than snowmelt. During the period March 28-April 8, 1960, when the total water discharge of Platte River at Louisville and of Elkhorn River at Waterloo was about one-fourth of the total for the year, the sediment discharge was an estimated 46 to 50 percent of the estimated total for the year at each station. Both the percentage of sand and the concentration of sand in the suspended sediment were much higher for the Platte and Elkhorn Rivers than for streams in the Big Blue River and Nemaha River basins. For convenience there are also included records for a few pertinent gaging stations in bordering States. The records were collected and computed by the Water Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey, under the direction of Malcolm D. Hale, district engineer, Surface Water Branch.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>This report marks the beginning of a new method of presenting, annually, basic data on surface-water records by States. Through September 30, 1960, the records of discharge and stage of streams and contents and stage of lakes or reservoirs were published in an annual series of U.S. Geological Survey water-supply papers entitled \"Surface Water Supply of the United States.\" Since 1951 there have been 20 volumes in the series; each volume covered an area whose boundaries coincided with those of certain natural drainage areas. The records in Indiana were contained in Parts 3A, 4 and 5 of that series.</p>\n<br/>\n<p>Beginning with the 1961 water year, streamflow records and related data will be released by the Geological Survey in annual reports on a State-boundary basis. Distribution of these basic-data reports will be limited and primarily for local needs. The records later will be published in Geological Survey water-supply papers at 5-year intervals. This range cannot be accounted for adequately by the peneplain concept. Although accordant summits, the chief evidence for peneplains, occur over large areas, summits are not accordant between adjacent areas within the valley. The Lebanon Valley is underlain in the south by carbonate rocks and in the north by shale. The major stream valley in the carbonate area is now partly occupied by segments of two streams, but at one time it was the location of one major stream -the ancestral Quittapahilla Creek-which was beheaded by a tributary to Swatara Creek. Landforms of the Lebanon Valley are probably the result of erosion within two separate stream systems-Swatara and ancestral Quittapahilla creeks-in which streams and interfluvial areas were in a state of erosional equilibrium. The land surface in equilibrium with the ancestral Quittapahilla Creek lies at a higher elevation than adjacent land surfaces that were in equilibrium with Swatara Creek. The land surface on the carbonate rocks, which is in the ancestral Quittapahilla Creek system, lies at a lower elevation than shale within the same system, but it commonly lies at a higher elevation than shale in adjacent parts of the Swatara Creek system. Accordance of summits is the result of uniform erosion of uniform rocks in basins whose discharge points are at the same elevation. Lack of accordant summits on uniform rocks is the result of erosion in basins whose discharge points differ in elevation.</span></p>","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of The belt is coincident with the western border zone of the middle Cretaceous&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">Idaho</span><span>&nbsp;batholith, as it extends from the west edge of the massive interior of the batholith to about the western limit of the border zone of gneisses and schists. West of this belt is the Columbia Plateau province of irregular domal and anticlinal uplifts and northwest-trending normal faults. These structures are superimposed upon east- to northeast-trending, low-grade metamorphic rocks intruded by semi-concordant stocks and small batholiths, products largely of&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">Late</span><span>&nbsp;Jurassic (?) orogeny. The&nbsp;</span><span class=\"ScopusTermHighlight\">Idaho</span><span>&nbsp;batholith has been little deformed, and its border-zone rocks of intermediate competence are broken by concordant structures. Young structures cut directly across the relatively incompetent rocks of the older orogen to the west.
