Because of the ambiguity inherent in magnetic interpretation, a unique solution for the parameters involved (depth of burial, geometric configuration, and magnetic susceptibility of the mass producing the anomaly) is impossible. However, if one of the parameters is known it is sometimes possible to indicate a range of plausible values for each of the remaining parameters. The depth to the surface of the Precambrian rocks in Randolph County is known from drill-hole data to be about 3,000 ft. As the depth of burial is known, limits need be set only on the thickness, angle of dip, and susceptibility contrast of the assumed dike. These limits are determined by a graphical method. Theoretical anomalies over the postulated dike are computed for different dike thicknesses, angles of dip, and susceptibility contrasts. The computed profiles are then fitted to an observed magnetic profile flown at right angles to the trend of the feature. Numerical values for the \"goodness of fit\" are calculated by using the statistical method of sums of squares. Two plots, one of the index of goodness of fit and the other of susceptibility as functions of dip angle and dike thickness, are made to show graphically the interdependence of the variables and the plausible range of each. The contoured plots of the goodness of fit and the susceptibility contrast show that the range of best fit is between dip angles of 30 and 60 degrees and dike thickness of 1,000 to over 4,000 ft. The contoured plot of the susceptibility contrast, translated into percentage of magnetite, shows this parameter to be independent of the dip angle, varying only with thickness.
","language":"English","publisher":"Society of Exploration Geophysicists","doi":"10.1190/1.1439104","usgsCitation":"Andreasen, G.E., and Zietz, I., 1962, Limiting parameters in the magnetic interpretation of a geologic structure: Geophysics, v. 27, no. 6, p. 807-814, https://doi.org/10.1190/1.1439104.","productDescription":"8 p.","startPage":"807","endPage":"814","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":385945,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Indiana","otherGeospatial":"Randolph County","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -85.23056030273438,\n 40.01499435375046\n ],\n [\n -84.79934692382812,\n 40.01499435375046\n ],\n [\n -84.79934692382812,\n 40.310948849735\n ],\n [\n -85.23056030273438,\n 40.310948849735\n ],\n [\n -85.23056030273438,\n 40.01499435375046\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"27","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Andreasen, G. This concept, apparently based on thick marine accumulations far apart on the margins of the region, is inconsistent with field data. Within the area of the Idaho batholith, Permian(?) volcanic rocks rest either on batholithic rocks or on the Belt Series. The Belt Series rocks have furnished the xenoliths in the batholith. To the west upper Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata are invaded. Along the eastern margin, south of lat. 45°, thick Paleozoic strata are intruded by the batholith. These locally exceed 30,000 feet in thickness and thin eastward. They have many variations. Those close to the batholith, especially those high in the sequence, are regarded as of near-shore origin. The Paleozoic strata in southeastern Idaho, more than 17,000 feet thick, are broadly similar except that Cambrian strata there are thicker and more widespread. The part of central Idaho north of the vicinity of lat. 45° has no known Paleozoic strata. Northern Idaho has only a few outcrops of beds of Cambrian age. The differences in thickness and character between Paleozoic strata in south-central and southeastern Idaho and those in western Montana and Wyoming (less than 7500 feet thick) suggest a hinge line near the eastern boundary between Idaho and Montana with a shelf to the east and a trough to the west. In south-central Idaho this trough had a maximum width of 90 miles and a western shore roughly at the east margin of the batholith. This trough wedged out northward a little beyond lat. 45°. Thus the area of the present Idaho batholith has been a positive block since Precambrian time, comparable to but apparently of longer duration than the geanticline in northern Nevada. Any invasion of the positive block in Idaho by marine waters during the Paleozoic was local and brief, except perhaps along the western border. Most of the rock in the blocks consists of coarse arkosic sandstone, tuffaceous siltstone, claystone, and thick beds of bentonite of the Chadron and Brule formations of Oligocene age. In a few places, small sections of the underlying Paleocene strata are tilted. The blocks formed along northwest-trendingpre-Arikaree valley walls and escarpments. The major joint system of underlying rocks apparently controlled the orientation of the slides, and the dip of these older rocks facilitated the downward and outward movement of the landslide blocks. The Short Pine Hills, Harding County, South Dakota, and the Long Pine Hills, Carter County, Montana, contain numerous landslide blocks that are similar in orientation and geologic setting to those of the Slim Buttes. In contrast, the Finger Buttes of Carter County, Montana, contain landslide blocks that strike about N. 70° E. and dip to the southeast. This lack of parallelism with blocks of nearby areas is apparently due to the lack of a well-developed joint system in underlying rocks of this area. The presence of the complete sequence of Oligocene rocks in the downdropped blocks indicates that before pre-Arikaree erosion the area was covered by 500 feet or more of beds of the Chadron and Brule formations. These landslide blocks show that the time interval represented by the unconformity at the base of the Arikaree Formation was of relatively short duration.
","language":"English","publisher":"Geological Society of America","doi":"10.1130/0016-7606(1962)73[725:TLNSDA]2.0.CO;2","usgsCitation":"Gill, J.R., 1962, Tertiary landslides, northwestern South Dakota and Southeastern Montana: Bulletin of the Geological Society of America, v. 73, no. 6, p. 725-735, https://doi.org/10.1130/0016-7606(1962)73[725:TLNSDA]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"11 p.","startPage":"725","endPage":"735","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":385898,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"South Dakota, Montana","otherGeospatial":"southeastern Montana, northwestern South Dakota","geographicExtents":"{\n \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n \"features\": [\n {\n \"type\": \"Feature\",\n \"properties\": {},\n \"geometry\": {\n \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n \"coordinates\": [\n [\n [\n -104.04052734375,\n 45.93587062119052\n ],\n [\n -107.46826171874999,\n 45.89000815866184\n ],\n [\n -107.42431640625,\n 44.98034238084973\n ],\n [\n -101.7333984375,\n 45.058001435398275\n ],\n [\n -101.75537109375,\n 45.9511496866914\n ],\n [\n -104.04052734375,\n 45.93587062119052\n ]\n ]\n ]\n }\n }\n ]\n}","volume":"73","issue":"6","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Gill, J. At 12.5° the disease was transmitted by implantation and by injection, but there was no evidence of fish-to-fish spread, nor seasonal change in host susceptibility. The temperature coefficient used to adjust conductivity of natural waters to a given temperature varies depending on the kinds and concentrations of electrolytes, the temperature at the time of measurement, and the temperature to which measurements are being adjusted.
