These Quaternary materials are divided on the basis of topgraphic position into 'high terrace deposits' and 'alluvium.' The high terrace lies at an elevation of 50 to 60 feet above the alluvium, which in turn lies 7 to 15 feet above the channel of the Canadian River. Southwest of Norman a relatively thick section of these deposits occur as a hydrologic unit and overlie impermeable Permian shale. The high terrace deposits contain thick beds of clay, silt, and fine sand, whereas the alluvium contains a higher percentage of coarse sand and gravel.\r\nGround-water recharge is estimated to be 23 percent of the normal annual precipitation of 33.22 inches; the specific yield is about 15 percent, and the coefficient of permeability is about 1,000 gpd/ft2. Using these figures 17,000 acre-feet of water is computed to be in storage within the area acting as a hydrologic unit. About 3.6 million gallons of water is discharged daily from the high terrace deposits through a 16,000-foot section of alluvium having a saturated thickness of 40 feet along the river.\r\n\r\nThe quality of water in the high terrace deposits meets the standards of the U.S. Public Health Service for domestic water used by Interstate carriers but nitrate content of one well is higher than recommended by the Oklahoma Department of Public Health. From these data, composite frequency curves were defined which express the ratio of floods of various recurrence intervals to the mean annual flood. Multiple correlation techniques were used to obtain formulas that relate the basin parameters of drainage area, main channel slope, and lake and reservoir surface area to the mean annual flood. By combining the results from the mean annual flood formulas with the regional frequency curves, the flood-frequency relationship can be determined for most sites in the State where the drainage basin exceeds 20 square miles. The curves and formulas are not applicable to: main stem of several of the larger rivers, highly regulated streams where it is possible for man to alter flood peaks, and drainage basins under 70 square miles in a part of west-central Wisconsin.

Flood data have been used to define flood-frequency curves applicable to the State.
Composite frequency curves have been defined showing the relation of the mean annual flood to floods having recurrence intervals of 1. 2 to 50 years. Other curves express the relation of the mean annual flood to drainage basin characteristics. For the northern part of the State, it was found that the slope of the composite frequency curve varies with drainage area size, and an adjustment curve was drawn for use in conjunction with the composite curve for this area.
By combining data from the composite and mean annual flood curves a flood-frequency curve may be drawn for any stream in Arkansas, not materially affected by works of man, within the limits of drainage area and recurrence interval defined by base data.

Nisqually Glacier, Washington","docAbstract":"A knowledge of the areas once occupied by mountain glaciers reveals at least part of the past behavior of these glaciers. From this behavior, inferences of past climate can be drawn. The maximum advance of Nisqually Glacier in the last thousand years was located, and retreat from this point is believed to have started about 1840. The maximum downvalley position of the glacier is marked by either a prominent moraine or by a line of difference between stands of trees of strikingly different size and significantly different age. The thousand-year age of the forest beyond the moraine or line between abutting stands represents the minimum time since the surface was glaciated. This age is based on the age of the oldest trees, plus an estimated interval required for the formation of humus, plus evidence of an ancient fire, plus an interval of deposition of pyroclastics. The estimate of the date when Nisqually Glacier began to retreat from its maximum advance is based upon the ages of the oldest trees plus an interval of 5 years estimated as the time required for the establishment of trees on stable moraines. This interval was derived from a study of the ages of trees growing at locations of known past positions of the glacier.\r\n\r\nReconnaissance studies were made on moraines formed by Emmons and Tahoma Glaciers. Preliminary analyses of these data suggest that Emmons Glacier started to recede from its maximum advance in about 1745. Two other upvalley moraines mark positions from which recession started about 1849 and 1896. Ages of trees near Tahoma Glacier indicate that it started to recede from its position of maximum advance in about 1635. In this province, an accurate belt more than 300 miles long and 2 to 40 miles wide, sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age are exposed or inferred to underlie lowland areas covered by Quaternary unconsolidated deposits or ice (Miller, Payne, Gryc, 1959, p. 37-47). Field studies were carried out in the province intermittently from 1944 to 1960, under the Geological Survey's program of petroleum investigations in southern Alaska.
