Dak., and is at an altitude of about 5,400 feet above mean sea level. The sedimentary rocks that constitute the plateau range in age from Cambrian to Pennsylvanian. Rocks of Silurian and Devonian age are absent. The presence of rocks of Ordovician age has not been established definitely but they may be represented by 10 feet of sandstone directly beneath the Englewood limestone of Mississippian age. The sedimentary formations are underlain by schist of Precambrian age.
\n
Study of outcrops in the vicinity of the monument confirms the existence of a fault about 1,500 feet north of the entrance to Jewel Cave. The fault trends generally east-west across the monument and has a displacement of about 120 feet about 1 mile west of the entrance to the cave. The effect of the fault on the occurrence of ground water near the cave is not known. In addition to the spring that furnishes the present (1959) water supply for the facilities at Jewel Cave, three springs outside the monument were visited during the study. Combined yield of the 3 springs is less than 2 gpm (gallons per minute).
\n
A single test well indicates that the monument at the well site is underlain by 665 feet of limestone, dolomite, and sandstone of Paleozoic age and an undetermined thickness of quartzbiotite schist of Precambrian age. Pumping tests using a cylinder pump indicate that the test well is capable of producing 15 to 18 gpm for a short time from 2 zones of sandstone below the Englewood limestone. These sandstones are believed to present the best possibilities for development of a permanent water supply at the monument.
","largerWorkType":{"id":18,"text":"Report"},"largerWorkTitle":"Hydrology of the Public Domain","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":5,"text":"USGS Numbered Series"},"language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/wsp1475D","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the National Park Service","usgsCitation":"Dyer, C., 1961, Geology and occurrence of ground water at Jewel Cave National Monument, South Dakota: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1475, 23 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1475D.","productDescription":"23 p.","startPage":"139","endPage":"157","onlineOnly":"N","additionalOnlineFiles":"N","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137886,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1475d/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26336,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1475d/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"country":"United States","state":"South Dakota","otherGeospatial":"Jewel Cave National Monument","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -103.85478973388672,\n              43.71057158566884\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.85478973388672,\n              43.74381677850666\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.81153106689452,\n              43.74381677850666\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.81153106689452,\n              43.71057158566884\n            ],\n            [\n              -103.85478973388672,\n              43.71057158566884\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a80e4b07f02db64986f","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Dyer, C.F.","contributorId":23917,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Dyer","given":"C.F.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143533,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

For each run a straight trapezoidal channel was molded in the sand and the flume set at a predetermined slope. Introduction of the discharge was accompanied by widening and aggradation until a stable channel was established. By definition a stable equilibrium existed when channel width, water surface slope, and rate of transport became constant. The duration of individual runs ranged from 2 to 52 hours depending upon the time required for establishing equilibrium.

Stability of the banks determined channel shape. In the 2.0 mm sand at a given slope and discharge, only one depth was stable. At this depth the flow was just competent to move particles along the bed of the channel. An increase in discharge produced a wider channel of the same depth and thus transport per unit width remained at a minimum. Channels in the 0.67 mm sand were somewhat more stable and permitted a 1.5 fold increase in depth above that required to start movement of the bed material. An increased transport was associated with the increase in depth. The rate of transport is adequately described in terms of the total shear or in terms of the difference between the total shear and the critical shear required to begin movement.

In these experiments the finer, or 0.67 mm, sand, began to move along the bed of the channel at a constant shear stress. Incipient movement of the coarser, or 2.0 mm, sand, varied with the shear stress as well as the mean velocity. At the initiation of movement a lower shear was associated with a higher velocity and vice versa.

Anabranches of braided rivers and some natural river channels formed in relatively noncohesive materials resemble the essential characteristics of the flume channels. For a given slope and size of bed material the discharge per unit width in the laboratory channels was similar to that computed for anabranches and river channels measured in the field. Unlike most natural channels, despite impressive bank erosion, the channels in the laboratory only meandered at supercritical flows associated with very steep slopes. These conditions involving shallow depths, high velocity, and steep slopes are uncommon in most natural rivers.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/pp282G","usgsCitation":"Wolman, M.G., and Brush, L.M., 1961, Factors controlling the size and shape of stream channels in coarse noncohesive sands: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 282, 28 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/pp282G.","productDescription":"28 p.","startPage":"183","endPage":"210","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":164915,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/usgs_thumb.jpg"},{"id":330811,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0282g/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a03e4b07f02db5f840b","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Wolman, M. One study, of oceanborne chemicals in principal rivers, has established a method for the quantitative analysis of many minor elements. Strontium, barium, lithium, rubidium, chromium, nickel, copper, lead, boron, titanium, molybdenum, manganese, and vanadium occur most frequently in measurable quantities. \r\n\r\nReconnaissance of the strontium in surface waters of the United States, shows that surface waters in parts of northern and western Texas and southern New Mexico and Arizona are comparatively high in strontium. This information is primarily for use by civil defense officials and by others concerned with problems involving travel time of river water. \r\n\r\nTables and charts are presented to show, for a particular stage or discharge at Cincinnati, the average time it would take for water to travel through the entire reach from Pittsburgh, or through successive intermediate segments of the reach. For example, when the discharge at Cincinnati is 200,000 cfs, travel time from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati, a distance of 470 miles, averages about 7 days; and for discharges of more than 200,000 cfs, the travel time decreases very slowly with increasing discharge. When the discharge is 30,000 cfs, travel time is about 28 days; and for discharges of less than 30,000 cfs, the travel time increases very rapidly with decreasing discharge. Estimates of travel time at low discharge are subject to large errors. Statistical analysis of the possible variations of upstream discharge for a given discharge at Cincinnati indicates that the shortest probable travel time from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati ranges from 56 percent of that under average conditions when the discharge at Cincinnati is 15,000 cfs to 93 percent of that under average conditions when the discharge at Cincinnati is 894,000 cfs. \r\n\r\nA chart showing the time distribution of flow at Cincinnati is presented so that the probable travel time of Ohio River water can be determined for any time of the year. This chart provides information which, when applied to the time-of-travel chart, shows that the most probable travel time of water from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati ranges from 160 hours in February to 1,250 hours in September. Also presented is a flow-duration curve that can be used to predict future discharges and, subsequently, times of travel, for use in long-range planning. The procedure used to compute time of travel is described in sufficient detail to make it usable as a guide for similar studies of other rivers that have deans and pools in the reach being studied. \r\n\r\nThe computations for the time-of-travel charts were made as follows: (a) by dividing the reach between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati into four subreaches with a full-range streamgaging station at or near the ends of each; (b) by computing for each subreach mean velocities corresponding to various discharges at Cincinnati, using data obtained from river survey maps and data available from gaging station operations; (c) by assuming that any mass of contaminated water would travel at a rate equal to that of the mean velocity of the river water.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/cir439","usgsCitation":"Steacy, R.E., 1961, Time of travel of water in the Ohio River, Pittsburgh to Cincinnati: U.S. Geological Survey Circular 439, iii, 14 p. :map, diagrs., tables. ;27cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/cir439.","productDescription":"iii, 14 p. :map, diagrs., tables. ;27cm.","costCenters":[{"id":532,"text":"Pennsylvania Water Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":30428,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1961/0439/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":124727,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/circ/1961/0439/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","otherGeospatial":"Ohio River","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -84.957275390625,\n              38.272688535980976\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.8046875,\n              38.272688535980976\n            ],\n            [\n              -79.8046875,\n              40.73893324113601\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.957275390625,\n              40.73893324113601\n            ],\n            [\n              -84.957275390625,\n              38.272688535980976\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e48b6e4b07f02db533c35","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Steacy, Robert E.","contributorId":71162,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Steacy","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":146848,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The valley, which heads in the Laurentian Divide, and covers about 120 square miles, coincides approximately with a bedrock valley filled with as much as 150 feet of glacial deposits.
\n
A complex sequence of glacioaqueous sediments made up of clay, silt, sand, and gravel was delineated from test holes drilled at 238 sites. These sediments range in thickness from 0 to 125 feet and can be considered a hydrologic unit, bounded below by sandy till or bedrock and above by as much as 60 feet of clayey till. The piezometric surface ranges from 0 to about 70 feet below land surface, thus, the glacioaqueous deposits are not everywhere completely saturated. In places, however, the water is under artesian pressure.
\n
Within the Mountain Iron-Virginia area about 50 square miles are underlain by deposits 20 feet or more in thickness of silt, sand, or gravel that constitute an aquifer that is a large potential source for additional water supplies. A. Einstein for computing the total discharge of sediment particles of sizes that are in appreciable quantities in the stream bed. This procedure was modified by the U.S. Geological Survey and adapted to computing the total sediment discharge of a stream on the basis of samples of bed sediment, depth-integrated samples of suspended sediment, streamflow measurements, and water temperature. This paper gives simplified methods for computing total sediment discharge by the modified Einstein procedure. Each of four homographs appreciably simplifies a major step in the computations. Within the stated limitations, use of the homographs introduces much less error than is present in either the basic data or the theories on which the computations of total sediment discharge are based. The results are nearly as accurate mathematically as those that could be obtained from the longer and more complex arithmetic and algebraic computations of the Einstein procedure.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. G.P.O.,","doi":"10.3133/wsp1593","usgsCitation":"Colby, B.R., and Hubbell, D.W., 1961, Simplified methods for computing total sediment discharge with the modified Einstein procedure: U.S. Geological Survey Water Supply Paper 1593, vi, 17 p. ;24 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/wsp1593.","productDescription":"vi, 17 p. ;24 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":137129,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":26000,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264358,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-1.pdf","size":"3161","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264359,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-2.pdf","size":"2582","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264360,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-3.pdf","size":"1606","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264361,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-4.pdf","size":"355","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264362,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-5.pdf","size":"1808","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264363,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-6.pdf","size":"1599","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264364,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-7.pdf","size":"4402","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":264365,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/wsp/1593/plate-8.pdf","size":"4532","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e49f9e4b07f02db5f38d7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Colby, Bruce R.","contributorId":59775,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Colby","given":"Bruce","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143287,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Hubbell, David Wellington","contributorId":88330,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Hubbell","given":"David","email":"","middleInitial":"Wellington","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":143288,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Seven hundred and seven gravity stations were established between latitudes 42°15'N and 44°30'N between longitudes 111°30'W and 114°30'W. Three hundred and twenty-five of these stations were located in 2,700 square miles of the eastern part with an average density of one station per 8.3 square miles. The remaining 9,300 square miles were covered by several lines, with an average lineal density of one station per 2.0 miles. A simple-Bouguer gravity contour map has been made of the area by standard methods. The low gravity relief and broad high of the eastern Snake River Plain strongly contrasts with the high amplitude anomalies of the western plain. The major anomalies of the eastern plain consist of 1) a broad high, which is an extension of the large gravity highs of the western plain, 2) a set of elongated alternating lows and highs that trend normal to the axis of the eastern plain, 3) a series of small, local highs on the boundary of the plain, and 4) a prominent low centered over Mud Lake in the northern part of the surveyed area. The basalts of the eastern plain have probably filled troughs or valleys in an undulating subsurface floor rather than a large regional graben.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr6274","usgsCitation":"LaFehr, T.R., 1961, Gravity survey in the eastern Snake River Plain, Idaho — A progress report: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 62-74, Report: 58 p.; 1 Plate: 49.35 × 45.58 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6274.","productDescription":"Report: 58 p.; 1 Plate: 49.35 × 45.58 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":394788,"rank":4,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_8032.htm"},{"id":43238,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0074/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":43237,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0074/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":146546,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1962/0074/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Idaho","otherGeospatial":"eastern Snake River Plain","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -114.750,\n              42.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.5,\n              42.25\n            ],\n            [\n              -111.5,\n              45\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.750,\n              45\n            ],\n            [\n              -114.750,\n              42.25\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b11e4b07f02db6a23f4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"LaFehr, Thomas R.","contributorId":65858,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"LaFehr","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"R.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":169664,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
