In this province, an accurate belt more than 300 miles long and 2 to 40 miles wide, sedimentary rocks of Tertiary age are exposed or inferred to underlie lowland areas covered by Quaternary unconsolidated deposits or ice (Miller, Payne, Gryc, 1959, p. 37-47). The above relations cannot be detected without measurement of terrain characteristics. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency. Monthly water-level measurements were made in 193 wells, in 9 of which automatic water-level recorders were operated. Earlier measurements, covering the period 1941 through 1955, have been published in Geological Survey Water-Supply Papers; those for 1956, 1957, 1958, and 1959 have been released locally in duplicated form. Water-Supply Paper 1068 contains tabulated descriptions of 2,246 wells in existence in 1942 in the several ground-water basins of the county. The same publication also contains many water-level measurements made prior to 1942 by the city of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria Valley Voter Conservation District, San Joaquin Power Division of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., Union Sugar Co., Union Oil Co., and other organizations and individuals.</p><p>Comprehensive reports on the geology and ground-water resources of the Santa Ynez River basin (Upson and Thomasson, 1951, and Wilson, 1959), the south-coast basins (Upson, 1951), the Santa Maria Valley area (Worts, 1951), and the Cuyama Valley (Upson and Worts, 1951) have been published as Water-Supply Papers 1107, 1467, 1108, 1000, and 1110-B, respectively. A similar report on the San Antonio Creek Valley is in preparation. A report on stream runoff and ground-water storage capacity of the Santa Ynez River valley (Troxell and Wilson, 1952) was released to the open file on October 1952.</p><p>In addition to the water-level measurements made by the Geological Survey in 1960, measurements made by the Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District are included in this report. This information is primarily for use by civil defense officials and by others concerned with problems involving travel time of river water. \r\n\r\nTables and charts are presented to show, for a particular stage or discharge at Cincinnati, the average time it would take for water to travel through the entire reach from Pittsburgh, or through successive intermediate segments of the reach. For example, when the discharge at Cincinnati is 200,000 cfs, travel time from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati, a distance of 470 miles, averages about 7 days; and for discharges of more than 200,000 cfs, the travel time decreases very slowly with increasing discharge. When the discharge is 30,000 cfs, travel time is about 28 days; and for discharges of less than 30,000 cfs, the travel time increases very rapidly with decreasing discharge. Estimates of travel time at low discharge are subject to large errors. Statistical analysis of the possible variations of upstream discharge for a given discharge at Cincinnati indicates that the shortest probable travel time from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati ranges from 56 percent of that under average conditions when the discharge at Cincinnati is 15,000 cfs to 93 percent of that under average conditions when the discharge at Cincinnati is 894,000 cfs. \r\n\r\nA chart showing the time distribution of flow at Cincinnati is presented so that the probable travel time of Ohio River water can be determined for any time of the year. This chart provides information which, when applied to the time-of-travel chart, shows that the most probable travel time of water from Pittsburgh to Cincinnati ranges from 160 hours in February to 1,250 hours in September. Also presented is a flow-duration curve that can be used to predict future discharges and, subsequently, times of travel, for use in long-range planning. From this behavior, inferences of past climate can be drawn. The maximum advance of Nisqually Glacier in the last thousand years was located, and retreat from this point is believed to have started about 1840. The maximum downvalley position of the glacier is marked by either a prominent moraine or by a line of difference between stands of trees of strikingly different size and significantly different age. The thousand-year age of the forest beyond the moraine or line between abutting stands represents the minimum time since the surface was glaciated. This age is based on the age of the oldest trees, plus an estimated interval required for the formation of humus, plus evidence of an ancient fire, plus an interval of deposition of pyroclastics. The estimate of the date when Nisqually Glacier began to retreat from its maximum advance is based upon the ages of the oldest trees plus an interval of 5 years estimated as the time required for the establishment of trees on stable moraines. This interval was derived from a study of the ages of trees growing at locations of known past positions of the glacier.\r\n\r\nReconnaissance studies were made on moraines formed by Emmons and Tahoma Glaciers. Preliminary analyses of these data suggest that Emmons Glacier started to recede from its maximum advance in about 1745. Two other upvalley moraines mark positions from which recession started about 1849 and 1896. Ages of trees near Tahoma Glacier indicate that it started to recede from its position of maximum advance in about 1635. A hydrologic investigation was started in 1949 to determine whether the saline water in the lakes would spread to surrounding areas and cause damage to agricultural lands and the water supply. \r\n\r\nAngaur, which is in the Palau Islands in the southwestern part of Micronesia, is administered as part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, under a trusteeship granted to the United States by the United Nations. The island has an area of 3.2 square miles and has a maximum altitude of about 150 feet. The climate is tropical oceanic. The average annual temperature is 82 ? F; the average annual rainfall is about 125 inches; and the average relative humidity is about 80 percent. \r\n\r\nThe northwestern third of Angaur (province A) consists topographically of a series of concentric ridges and depressions which are underlain largely by well-cemented coralline limestone of Pliocene, Pleistocene, and Recent ages. The remaining two-thirds of Angaur (province B} is a low plain underlain in the northern and central parts by a low platform of coralline rubble of Pleistocene and Recent age and in the southern part by sandy and rubbly beach deposits of Recent age. Province A contained extensive phosphate deposits of which more than 3 million tons were mined in 1909-55. \r\n\r\nWeekly water-level measurements at 35 wells, test holes, and lakes indicate that the water table averages about 2 feet above mean sea level in the beach deposits, about half a foot above mean sea level in the rubble deposits, and about 1.35 feet above mean sea level in the coralline limestone. Water samples obtained weekly at the observation sites indicate that the ground water in province A is not of uniform quality, as large variations in salinity occur throughout the area. In contrast, the ground water in province B is of relatively uniform quality, and contains less than 1,000 ppm (parts per million) of chloride in most places. \r\n\r\nIn province A removal of earthy phosphate which had acted as a seal allowed the infiltration of saline water through solution channels exposed at the bottom of several of the lakes. The sampling program showed no indication of large-scale movement of saline water out of the lakes into adjacent ground water. Provinces A and B apparently function as independent ground-water units, and the quality of the ground water in province B has not been noticeably affected by mining activities in province A. \r\n\r\nThe lakes were backfilled with limestone rubble to reduce the possibility of underground movement of saline water out of the lakes. The gross permeability of the backfill material is less than that of the surrounding limestone in province A, and, as the rate of influx of saline water was curtailed, the recharge of fresh water from rainfall tended to reduce the salinity of the ground water in the fill. Flood data have been used to define flood-frequency curves applicable to the State.</p><p>Composite frequency curves have been defined showing the relation of the mean annual flood to floods having recurrence intervals of 1. 2 to 50 years. Other curves express the relation of the mean annual flood to drainage basin characteristics. For the northern part of the State, it was found that the slope of the composite frequency curve varies with drainage area size, and an adjustment curve was drawn for use in conjunction with the composite curve for this area.</p><p>By combining data from the composite and mean annual flood curves a flood-frequency curve may be drawn for any stream in Arkansas, not materially affected by works of man, within the limits of drainage area and recurrence interval defined by base data.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","publisherLocation":"Fort Smith,
