S. Geological Survey. Detailed mapping of the chromite deposits of the complex was done between 1939 and 1943, under the supervision of J. W. Peoples. Reports of this work, and geologic maps of most of the complex, have been published: Peoples and Howland (1940); Wimmler (1948); Howland, Garrels, and Jones (1949); Peoples, Howland, Jones, and Flint (1954); Jackson, Howland, Peoples, and Jones (1954); Howland (1955); Jones, Peoples, and Howland (in press). The present investigation has called for additional mapping and study of many problems which had to be bypassed because of the pressure of wartime urgency. I spent a total of about 15 months in the field during the summers of 1951 through 1955; P. R. Vail assisted in the field work in 1952 and 1953, and R. L. Christiansen assisted in 1954.

Garfield County, Montana on the extreme eastern edge of the petrographic province of Central Montana. They consist of dikes and plugs arranged in linear, en-echelon pattern with a northeast trend and intrude the Tullock member (Paleocene age) of the Fort Union formation. Extrusive rocks are absent. \r\n\r\nThe rocks are potassium-rich volcanic types showing a disequilibrium mineral assemblage consisting of sanidine, leucite, biotite, olivine, pyroxene, magnetite plus. ilmenite, apatite, calcite, quartz, and a yellowish to dark greenish glassy groundmass. Two chemical analyses of Smoky Butte rocks show high magnesium, potassium, titanium, and phosphorous and low aluminum and sodium content. The two norm calculations show that the rocks are oversaturated with 1.3 and 3.1 per-cent excess silica. Because of the peculiar nature of the Smoky Butte rocks, descriptive names have been applied to them. They are divided into six different types. \r\n\r\nThree periods of intrusion are proposed for Smoky Butte quarry where three rock types crop out. Other evidence for multiple injection occurs in several multiple dikes. Most of Alaska is now covered by topographic maps of high quality at scales of 1:63,360 and 1:250,000, prepared by multiplex methods from aerial photography. A classification made now is not likely to err through lack of knowledge of the geography and topography of the state; any changes it requires will reflect matters of judgment and taste, rather than ignorance. The accompanying classification was prepared intermittently between 1949 and 1959; most of the work was done between 1956 and 1959. It is hoped that it will bring about a clearer understanding of the geography of Alaska and will stimulate research into the history of development of Alaskan landforms.

basins, Michigan","docAbstract":"The floods of May 1959 in the Au Gres and Rifle River basins, Michigan, resulted from heavy rainfall during the night of May 19-20. Peak unit discharges for small drainage areas (less than about 15 square miles) were the highest ever measured in the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, and for very small areas (about one square mile) were of the same order of magnitude as those for the record Ontonagon River flood of August 1942 in the Upper Peninsula.
Because the flood area is sparsely populated, damages were largely confined to farm lands and facilities and to secondary roads and their appurtenant drainage structures.
The U. S. Geological Survey, through the district office in Lansing, Michigan, operates a network of streamgaging stations and crest-stage stations in the area affected by this flood. Six recording rain gages are operated in the upper Rifle River basin. Most of the gaging stations have been in operation for 7 to 9 years giving systematic records of stage, discharge, and volume of flow covering the range from drought to flood. This report contains records of
-stage and discharge at 9 gaging stations for the flood
period, peak discharges at 7 crest-stage stations
and 2 miscellaneous sites within the flood area, and
other data pertinent to the flood.
The ground water in Lyon County and elsewhere in southwestern Minnesota is generally hard and low in chloride. It is the purpose of this report to describe briefly the occurrence in Lyon County of waters of low hardness and of high chloride content. The waters are found largely in Cretaceous sandstone.
\nThe data were collected in conjunction with a countywide study of the geology and groundwater resources that is being made as part of a statewide investigation in cooperation with the Division of Waters, Minnesota Department of Conservation. The work is under the direct supervision of the junior author, who is district geologist for Minnesota.
\nHardness and chloride determinations were made with field-testing kits at the time data were obtained on most of the farm wells in the county. Tests were made on wells that were reported to yield relatively soft or \"salty\" water.

Moderate concentrations of strontium (0.50 to 1.5 ppm) are found in streams of Southeastern United States, most of the Great Plains Region, the Western Mountain and Plateau Regions, and California. Relatively high concentrations of strontium occur in the surface waters of an area that includes Northern and Western Texas and Southern New Mexico and Arizona.
