The information is most conveniently presented in a graph showing aquifer discharges as functions of the water level in the well at a particular time. \r\n\r\nTo determine the discharge-drawdown characteristics, a well is pumped at a steady rate for a certain length of time. While the well is being pumped, measurements are made of drawdown and of the discharge rates of the individual aquifers within the well. Discharge rates and drawdowns ,are usually recorded as functions of time, and their values for any given time during the test are obtained by interpolation. The procedure is repeated for several different rates of total well discharge. The well may be allowed to recover after each step, or discharge may be changed from one rate to another, and changes in discharge and drawdown may be measured by extrapolation. The flow measurements within the well may be made by use of a subsurface flowmeter or by one of several techniques involving the injection of electrolytic or radioactive tracers. The method was tested on a well in Mercer County, Pa., and provided much useful information on aquifer yields, 'thieving,' and hydrostatic heads of the individual zones.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Govt. Reconnaissance for beryl-bearing pegmatite in Nevada and in part of Mohave County, Ariz., and detailed studies in the Dawley Canyon area, Elko County, Nev., have shown that beryl occurs in at least 11 districts in the region. Muscovite has been prospected or mined in the Ruby and Virgin Mountains, Nev., and in Mohave County, Ariz. Feldspar has been mined in the southern part of the region near Kingman, Ariz., and in Clark County, Nev.

The pegmatites in the region range in age from Precambrian to late Mesozoic or Tertiary. Among the pegmatite minerals found or reported in the districts studied are beryl, chrysoberyl, scheelite, wolframite, garnet, tourmaline, fluorite, apatite, sphene, allanite, samarskite, euxenite, gadolinite, monazite, autunite, columbite-tantalite, lepidolite, molybdenite, and pyrite and other sulflde minerals.

The principal beryl-bearing pegmatites examined are in the Oreana and Lakeview (Humboldt Canyon) areas, Pershing County; the Dawley Canyon area in the Ruby Mountains, Elko County, Nev.; and on the Hummingbird claims in the Virgin Mountains, Mohave County, Ariz. Beryl has also been reported in the Marietta district, Mineral County; the Sylvania district, Esmeralda County; near Crescent Peak and near Searchlight, Clark County, Nev.; and in the Painted Desert near Hoover Dam, Mohave County, Ariz.

Pegmatites are abundant in the Ruby Mountains, chiefly north of the granite stock at Harrison Pass. In the Dawley Canyon area of 2.6 square miles at least 350 pegmatite dikes more than 1 foot thick were mapped, and beryl was found in small quantities in at least 100 of these dikes. Four of these dikes exceed 20 feet in thickness, and 1 is 55 feet thick. A few pegmatites were also examined in the Corral Creek, Gilbert Canyon, and Hankins Canyon areas in the Ruby Mountains.

The pegmatite dikes in the Dawley Canyon area intrude granite and metamorphic rocks which consist chiefly of quartzite and schist of probable Early Cambrian age. The granite is of two types: a biotite-muscovite granite that forms the main mass of the stock and albite granite that occurs in the metamorphic rocks near the borders of the stock. The pegmatites were emplaced chiefly along fractures in the granite and along schistosity or bedding planes in the metamorphic rocks.

Many of the Dawley Canyon pegmatite dikes are zoned, having several rock units of contrasting mineralogy or grain size formed successively from the walls inward. Aplitic units occur either as zones or in irregular positions in the pegmatite dikes and are a distinctive feature of the Dawley Canyon pegmatites. Some of the aplitic and fine-grained pegmatite units are characterized by thin layers of garnet crystals, forming many parallel bands on outcrop surfaces. The occurrence of aplitic and pegmatitic textures in the same dike presumably indicates abrupt changes in physical-chemical conditions during crystallization, such as changes in viscosity and in content of volatile constituents.

Concentrations of 0.1 percent or more beryl, locally more than 1 percent, occur in certain zones in the Dawley Canyon pegmatites. Spectrographic analyses of 23 samples indicate that the BeO content ranges from 0.0017 to 0.003 percent in the albite granite, from ,0.0013 to 0.039 percent in aplitic units in pegmatite, from 0.0005 to 0.10 percent in coarse-grained pegmatite, and from less than 0.0001 to 0.0004 percent in massive quartz veins.

The scheelite-beryl deposits at Oreana and in Humboldt Canyon, Pershing County, are rich in beryllium. Twelve samples from the Lakeview (Humboldt Canyon) deposit range from 0.018 to 0.11 percent BeO, but underground crosscuts have failed to intersect similar rock at depth. Beryl locally constitutes as much as 10 percent of the pegmatitic ore at Oreana. The beryl was not recovered during tungsten mining at Oreana and is now in the tailings of the mill at Toulon, Nev. S. Geological Survey to assign a geologist to a reconnaissance study of the pumice and pozzolan deposits of the Lesser Antilles. As a result, I made brief field examinations of all the reported deposits during the period May 25 - June 23, 1959. In company with Mr. Peter Martin-Kaye, Government Geologist, Windward Islands, headquartered at Castries, St. Lucia, I examined potential pumice and pozzolan deposits in Grenada, Dominica, St. Vincent and St. Lucia. With Dr. Percy C. Henriquez of the Technical-Economic Council, Netherlands Antilles, headquartered in Curacao, I saw those of St. Eustatius. I also visited pumice deposits on Martinique, in company with Mr. Edward T. Foster, Vice President of Meekins West Indies Company of Hollywood, Fla. Short visits were made to the islands of Antigua, Barbados, Nevis, St. Kitts, and Trinidad, partly to meet the necessities of inter-island transportation and partly to get some idea of the actual or potential mineral resources of these islands.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr6048","collaboration":"Prepared on behalf of the International Cooperation Administration.","usgsCitation":"Eckel, E.B., 1960, Pumice and pozzolan deposits in the Lesser Antilles: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 60-48, ii, 84 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6048.","productDescription":"ii, 84 p.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":430527,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1960/0048/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":145175,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1960/0048/report-thumb.jpg"}],"otherGeospatial":"Lesser Antilles","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -63.237024830264275,\n              17.838025551279358\n            ],\n            [\n              -63.237024830264275,\n              11.761928103356198\n            ],\n            [\n              -59.165303946111166,\n              11.761928103356198\n            ],\n            [\n              -59.165303946111166,\n              17.838025551279358\n            ],\n            [\n              -63.237024830264275,\n              17.838025551279358\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a90e4b07f02db655da4","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Eckel, Edwin Butt","contributorId":95861,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Eckel","given":"Edwin","email":"","middleInitial":"Butt","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":167847,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Zirconium is an intrinsic element, contained principally in the detrital syngenetic fraction of the host sandstone. Calcium, manganese, and sodium are intrinsic elements contained principally in epigenetic (diagenetic) carbonate in the host sandstone. Uranium, yttrium, and nickel are principally extrinsic elements, introduced into the host sandstone by uranium mineralization or related processes. Somewhat more than half of the iron is probably intrinsic and the remainder is extrinsic.

Three methods can be used to estimate the size of uranium deposits in the Salt Wash, member within broad limits. Method 1 is based on simple linear-regression theory; method 2 is based on multiple-regression theory (long method); and method 3, on multiple-regression theory (short method).

For methods 1 and 2 the estimated log size of each deposit can be computed from tables showing the known concentration of uranium, yttrium, sodium, iron, zirconium, manganese, calcium, and nickel in the deposits, as determined by semiquantitative spectrographic analysis. For method 3 the estimated size or log size can be read directly from a table showing known concentration of uranium and yttrium only.

About 80 percent of the tonnage-size estimates from method 1 will be within a factor of 13 (12-14) of the true sizes. The precision of the size estimates from method 2, the long multiple-regression method, is highly variable. Some estimates from method 2 will be within a factor of 12 of the true size at the 80-percent confidence level; others, within a factor of 40 at the 80-percent confidence level. About 80 percent of the tonnage-size estimates from method 3, the short multiple-regression method, will be within a factor of 15 (13-16) of the true size.

A group of 40 deposits of known size was used to test the theoretical derivation of the confidence intervals given above. It was concluded from the test that the confidence intervals describe the precision of the methods correctly.

The methods for estimating the size of uranium deposits are useful where the ore is poorly exposed or where an independent estimate is desired. The error of the estimates may be quite large, as indicated by the confidence limits given above; but the estimates can be used to, at least, distinguish very large from very small deposits. They also may serve to encourage or discourage further expenditures in the development and exploration of ore bodies. The methods of size estimation can be particularly useful in attempts to appraise or compare groups of deposits or mining districts, inasmuch as the average estimate of size of deposits in a group is more precise than any single estimate.

The methods for estimating size are established only for deposits in the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation. Tests indicate that the equations calculated for deposits in the Salt Wash fail completely if applied to deposits in other stratigraphic units, such as the Moss Back and Shinarump members of the Chinle formation. The field work was supplemented by investigations of artificial evaporite minerals precipitated in the laboratory and by study of the chemical composition of halite rock of different geologic ages.\r\n\r\nThe environment of deposition of contemporaneous marine salt deposits in Mexico is acidic, is strongly reducing a few centimeters below the surface, and teems with microscopic life. Deposition of salt, unlike that of many other sediments, is not wholly a constructional phenomenon. Permanent deposits result only if a favorable balance exists between deposition in the dry season and dissolution in the wet season.\r\n\r\nEvaporite formations chosen for special study in the West Texas Basin are, in ascending order, the Castile, Salado, and Rustler formations, which have a combined thickness of 1200 meters. The Castile formation is largely composed of gypsum rock, the Salado, halite rock, and the Rustler, quartz and carbonate sandstone. The lower part of the Castile formation is bituminous and contains limestone laminae. The Castile and Rustler formations thicken to the south at the expense of salt of the intervening Salado formation.\r\n\r\nThe clastic rocks of the Rustler formation are interpreted as the deposits of a series of barrier islands north of which halite rock of the Salado was deposited. The salt is believed to have formed in shallow water of uniform density that was mixed by the wind. Where water depth exceeded the depth of the wind mixing, density stratification developed, and gypsum was deposited. Dense water of high salinity below the density discontinuity was overlain by less dense, more normally saline water which was derived from the sea to the south. Mixing of the two water layers at their interface diluted the lower layer so as to prevent halite formation, but at the same time the depressed solubility of calcium sulfate in the mixture at the interface caused precipitation of gypsum.\r\n\r\nThe upper water layer is believed to have supported a flourishing microscopic biota whose remains descended into semisterile brine below where reducing conditions prevailed. This environment generated the bituminous gypsum rock. At times, microcrystalline calcium carbonate of probable biochemical origin formed in the upper layer and settled below to form limestone laminae such as those of the lower part of the Castile formation.\r\n\r\nChemical analyses of Permian and present-day salt were compared with analyses of marine salt as old as Cambrian age to determine if evaporite deposits can contribute information on the geologic history of sea water. The results contain uncertainties that cannot be fully resolved, but they suggest that the ratio between ions in sea water has been approximately constant since Precambrian time. In addition, the abrupt initial appearance of rock salt deposits in Cambrian time suggests that the Precambrian ocean may have been rather dilute, but this apparent relationship also could have been caused by other factors.","language":"ENGLISH","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey],","doi":"10.3133/ofr6099","usgsCitation":"Moore, G.W., 1960, Origin and chemical composition of evaporite deposits: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 60-99, 174 p. ill., mpa ;28 cm., https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr6099.","productDescription":"174 p. ill., mpa ;28 cm.","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":148399,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1960/0099/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":43958,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1960/0099/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":43959,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1960/0099/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":43960,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1960/0099/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aafe4b07f02db66cea1","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moore, George William","contributorId":89123,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moore","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"William","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":170474,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Along many of the veins fine-grained tourmaline and quartz have replaced the country rock. The primary ore minerals are chalcopyrite, glaucodot, safflorite, and cobaltite. The copper- and cobalt-rich parts of the deposits appear to be in separate ore shoots. Gold content is generally higher in the cobalt-bearing parts of the veins than in the copper-rich  parts.\r\n\r\nThe Standard mine has developed part of one vein zone. Several other vein zones that crop out may contain as much copper as the Standard vein zone. Further bulldozing and diamond drilling on the surface, and more geologic mapping, sampling, and diamond drilling underground are suggested as means to explore for more ore deposits.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr60143","usgsCitation":"Vhay, J.S., 1960, A preliminary report on the copper-cobalt deposits of the Quartzburg district, Grant County, Oregon: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 60-143, Report: 20 p.; 3 Plates: 27.11 × 28.57 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr60143.","productDescription":"Report: 20 p.; 3 Plates: 27.11 × 28.57 inches or smaller","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":45318,"rank":402,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1960/0143/plate-3.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45317,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1960/0143/plate-2.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45316,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1960/0143/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":45319,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1960/0143/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":392205,"rank":6,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_7970.htm"},{"id":147825,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1960/0143/report-thumb.jpg"}],"country":"United States","state":"Oregon","county":"Grant County","otherGeospatial":"Quartzburg district","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\",\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -118.6889,\n              44.5422\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.6658,\n              44.5422\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.6658,\n              44.5603\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.6889,\n              44.5603\n            ],\n            [\n              -118.6889,\n              44.5422\n            ]\n          ]\n        ]\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4aaae4b07f02db668a87","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Vhay, John Stewart","contributorId":97920,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Vhay","given":"John","email":"","middleInitial":"Stewart","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":172749,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
