In the evening they migrated into the overlying strata as the surface light intensity decreased from 15 to 1 foot-candles. Frequently the mysids migrated through the metalimnion when first ascending, but later in the night the majority occurred in or immediately below this layer. As the length of day decreased following the summer solstice, the mysids ascended progressively earlier each evening and descended later each morning (they descended when the surface light intensity was increasing from 10</span><sup>&minus;3</sup><span>&nbsp;to 10</span><sup>&minus;2</sup><span>&nbsp;foot-candle). Moonlight and fog influenced the extent and time of vertical migration.The optimum light intensity for mysids is so low that they are concentrated near the bottom during the day. As the light decreases at sunset, they move upward rapidly; possibly because of a positive reaction to decreasing light. Gill-net and trawl catches had different length-frequency distributions and age compositions, but estimates of growth from the two catches were very similar.  The body-scale relation is a straight line with an intercept of 1.5 inches.  Weight of Munising Bay whitefish captured in June increased as the 3.17 power of the length.  Growth in length and weight of Munising Bay whitefish was the slowest yet reported from Great Lakes waters.  Munising Bay whitefish required nearly 8 years to reach a length of 10 inches and a full 13 years to reach 15 inches.  Slightly more than 8 years were required to reach a weight of 8 ounces and a little less than 14 years to reach 1 pound.  The sex ratio of the Munising Bay whitefish exhibited no systematic change with an increase in age.  The entire sample for which ages were determined contained 52 percent males.  Munising Bay whitefish matured at much shorter lengths but at a greater age than reported for other Great Lakes whitefish populations.  The smallest mature males were in the 11.5- to 11.9-inch length interval (age-group VII) and all males longer than 14.4 inches (age-group XII) were mature.  The first mature females appeared at 12.0-12.4 inches (age-group X) and all females longer than 14.9 inches (age-group XII) were mature.  The more rapidly growing individuals matured earlier than the slow-growing ones.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Transactions of the American Fisheries Society","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"Taylor & Francis","publisherLocation":"London, UK","doi":"10.1577/1548-8659(1960)89[323:AAGOTW]2.0.CO;2","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Edsall, T.A., 1960, Age and growth of the whitefish Coregonus clupeaformis, of Munising Bay, Lake Superior: Transactions of the American Fisheries Society, v. 89, no. 4, p. 323-332, https://doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1960)89[323:AAGOTW]2.0.CO;2.","productDescription":"10 p.","startPage":"323","endPage":"332","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":131718,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":266924,"type":{"id":10,"text":"Digital Object Identifier"},"url":"https://dx.doi.org/10.1577/1548-8659(1960)89[323:AAGOTW]2.0.CO;2"}],"volume":"89","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ae4e4b07f02db6899a5","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Edsall, Thomas A.","contributorId":84302,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Edsall","given":"Thomas","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"preferred":false,"id":308172,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The drill sites are in topographic basins where gravimetric and geologic surveys indicated the presence, beneath alluvium, of a thick section of Quaternary and Tertiary sedimentary and volcanic rocks.</p><p>Two holes, which were deeper tests at sites drilled in 1954, cored only silts, sands, and gravels: Four Corners test hole. 1 was drilled in sec. 20, T. 10 N., R. 6 W., to a depth of 3,500 feet. Four Corners test hole 2, in sec. 5, T. 10 N., R. 8 W., was drilled to 2,328 feet.</p><p>Three holes which were drilled at new sites north of Kramer Junction, the intersection of U.S. Highways 395 and 466 and locally known as Four Corners, penetrated colemanite-bearing sediments. The location and total depth of these holes, are as follows: Four Corners test hole 3, sec. 18, T. 11 N., R. 6 W., depth 2,568. feet; Four Corners test hole 4, near the north edge of sec. 30, T. 11 N., R. 6 W., 1 depth 3,500 feet; Four Corners test hole 5, near the south edge of sec. 30, depth 1,604 feet. The sections of rocks penetrated in these 3 holes are similar. In each, the colemanite is in fine-grained sediments; these lie below sands and gravels, which are about 600 to 800 feet thick, and are underlain by sandstones and conglomerates.</p><p>Colemanite is most abundant in the cores from Four Corners test hole 5, particularly in the 76 feet of core recovered between depths of 1,051 and 1,131 feet. Chemical analysis indicates that in this section of core the average content of BaOs is above 14 percent. In addition to colemanite, the cores contain sulfides of arsenic, an unusual iron sulfide, and zeolites. This mineral ,content of the colemanite-bearing sediments north of Kramer Junction (Four Corners), together with the general lithology of the lake beds and the occurrence of the sediments as a tilted section of beds below sands and gravels, supports correlation with the upper or marginal parts of the borate-bearing sediments at the Kramer borate mining district, which have similar features. There is, however, no evidence that any beds are exactly equivalent in age.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/b1045F","usgsCitation":"Benda, W.K., Erd, R.C., and Smith, W.C., 1960, Core logs from five test holes near Kramer, California: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1045, 79 p.; 2 Plates, https://doi.org/10.3133/b1045F.","productDescription":"79 p.; 2 Plates","startPage":"319","endPage":"393","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":61711,"rank":401,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1045a/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":61710,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1045a/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":167774,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1045f/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":109220,"rank":700,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_20647.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"},"description":"20647"},{"id":96101,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1045f/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad8e4b07f02db6849cd","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Benda, William K.","contributorId":6062,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Benda","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"K.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":211965,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Erd, Richard C.","contributorId":89899,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Erd","given":"Richard","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":211967,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Smith, Ward C.","contributorId":42972,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Smith","given":"Ward","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":211966,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

And you expect it to flow night or day, summer or winter, whether you want to fill a glass or water the lawn. It should be clean and pure, without any odor.</p><p>You have seen or read about places where the water doesn't have these qualities. You may have lived in a city where you were allowed to water the lawn only during a few hours of certain days. We know a large town where the water turns brown after every big rainstorm.</p><p>Beginning shortly after World War II, large areas in the Southwestern United States had a 10-year drought, and newspapers published a lot of information about its effects. Some people say that the growing demand for water will cause serious shortages over much of the country in the next 10 to 40 years. But it has always been true that while water wells and springs dry up in some places, floods may be occurring in other places at the same time.</p><p>Nearly every month news stories are published describing floods somewhere in the country. In fact, every year, on the average, 75,000 persons are forced from their homes by floods. In some years, as in 1951 when the lower Kansas River experienced a great flood, half a million people are affected. To understand the reasons for such recurring distress, it is necessary to know something about rivers and about the flat land or flood plain that borders the river.</p><p>Interest in water and related problems is growing as our population increases and as the use of water becomes steadily greater. To help meet this heightened interest in general information about water and its use and control is the reason this primer was written. The primer is in two parts. The first part tells about hydrology, or the science that concerns the relation of water to our earth, and the second part describes the development of water supplies and the use of water. The Geological Survey is publishing this primer in nontechnical language in the hope that it will enable the general reader to understand the facts about water as a part of nature, and that by having this understanding the people can solve their water problems.</p><p>We, as representatives of the Geological Survey, acknowledge with thanks the helpful suggestions made on an early draft by Marion Loizeaux, Maria Lord Converse, Constance Foley, Laura R. Langbein, and Bruce C. Leopold. We are also indebted to various geologists and engineers of the Survey for their discerning critical reviews.</p>","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","doi":"10.3133/7000045","usgsCitation":"Leopold, L.B., and Langbein, W.B., 1960, A primer on water: General Interest Publication, iv, 50 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/7000045.","productDescription":"iv, 50 p.","numberOfPages":"57","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":261217,"rank":800,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/7000045/report.pdf"},{"id":261218,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/gip/7000045/report-thumb.jpg"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b1be4b07f02db6a8fa7","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Leopold, Luna Bergere","contributorId":93884,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Leopold","given":"Luna","email":"","middleInitial":"Bergere","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":344013,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Langbein, Walter Basil","contributorId":40581,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Langbein","given":"Walter","email":"","middleInitial":"Basil","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":344014,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

Sexes did not differ in growth rate. Growth within the season varied greatly in different years and total growth deviated as much as 15.3% from the mean of the entire period. Water temperature, size of brood, and abundance of large walleyes and perch did not affect growth rate. Very early or late spawning influenced total growth during the season and final size and goodness or poorness of a season's growth was determined by the middle of July. Growth rate of young-of-the-year perch and total use of perch as food did not significantly influence growth. Incidence of perch in walleye stomachs ranged from 10.9 to 98.0% and spottail shiner was a more important food item in most years than perch. Variations in the Ca/P ratio produced significant differences in results when the level of phosphorus in the diet was 0.75%, but the differences were less marked when the level of phosphorus was increased to 1.00%.  Although diets containing 0.75% phosphorus and 1.8% calcium appeared adequate for reproduction, as judged by the criteria of the maintenance of satisfactory condition in the breeders, egg production, fertility, hatchability and survival of offspring during the first 5 days after hatching, it was found that the winter mortality of the offspring of birds fed such a diet was much greater than that occurring in the offspring of birds fed on diets containing 1.00 or 1.25% phosphorus.  It is concluded that breeding bobwhite quail require diets furnishing approximately 1.00% phosphorus and 2.3% calcium.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"U.S. Trout News","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Moffett, J.W., 1960, The American Fisheries Society: U.S. Trout News, v. 5, no. 4, p. 20-22.","productDescription":"p. 20-22","startPage":"20","endPage":"22","numberOfPages":"2","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":130474,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"5","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad5e4b07f02db683449","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Moffett, James W.","contributorId":94245,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Moffett","given":"James","email":"","middleInitial":"W.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308376,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

Studies were made on a 206.6 acre plot that was treated with DDT for experimental control of the Lone Star tick (Amblyomrna americanum). A dust consisting of one part of DDT to nine parts of pyrophyllite was applied at an average rate of 4.4 pounds of DDT per acre.      The limits of DDT concentration that affected wildlife cannot be stated exactly because of a heavy rain that fell near the end of the dusting, and because of irregularity in DDT deposition. Since absolute uniformity of dusting could not be expected in any large scale DDT application, the effects observed in these trials were probably fairly representative. However, continued dry weather would have permitted longer exposure to DDT, possibly with more severe effects than those found in this study.      The vegetation of the experimental area was roughly 70 percent ungrazed tall-grass prairie and 30 percent trees and shrubs.  Ground and bush feeding birds were severely affected.  Cardinals, lark sparrows, field sparrows, Bewick's wrens, Carolina wrens, Kentucky warblers, yellow-breasted chats, blue grosbeaks, and painted buntings were nearly or entirely eliminated from the treated area.      Birds affected, but less drastically reduced in numbers, were yellow-billed cuckoo, black and white warbler, yellow-throated vireo, and white-eyed vireo.         Birds found dead in the DDT area were 9 cardinals, 2 painted buntings, 2 lark sparrows, 1 yellow-breasted chat, and 1 white-eyed vireo. Bird mortality had begun by the day after dusting and was largely over by the end of the fifth day.      Census of deer in DDT and check areas before and after treatment showed no reduction in deer numbers and no diminution in use of the DDT area. No deer or fawns were found dead or affected.          Box-trapping of raccoons in DDT and check areas before and after treatment showed no effects that could be attributed to DDT.      Limited observations on armadillos, striped skunks, and rabbits gave no indication of pronounced damage to these forms. No mammals of any kind were found dead or affected in or near the DDT area.      Four rough green snakes and one Texan spiny lizard were found dead in the DDT area.  Mortality was probably high among insectivorous reptiles.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Ohio Conservation Bulletin","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","collaboration":"Out-of-print","usgsCitation":"Seldon, C.P., and Van Meter, H.D., 1960, Lake Erie walleyes--again on the upswing?: Ohio Conservation Bulletin, v. 24, no. 1, p. 5-7.","productDescription":"p. 5-7","startPage":"5","endPage":"7","numberOfPages":"2","costCenters":[{"id":324,"text":"Great Lakes Science Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":128894,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"24","issue":"1","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4b2fe4b07f02db6b4075","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Seldon, Charles P.","contributorId":57398,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Seldon","given":"Charles","email":"","middleInitial":"P.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308428,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Van Meter, Harry D.","contributorId":36887,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Van Meter","given":"Harry","email":"","middleInitial":"D.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":308427,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}
