S. Geological Survey, with the cooperation of the Arkansas Geological and Conservation Commission, has been engaged in stratigraphic investiqations in northern Arkansas to aid in the search for oil and gas. Seven reports of these investigations, including both surface and subsurface studies, have been completed (Lantz, 1950; Maher and Lantz, 1952, 1953a, 1953b; Glick and Frezon, 1953; Sheldon, 1954; Frezon and Glick, in press). This report, which was completed in 1955, presents the detailed stratigraphic sections used in correlating and mapping rocks of Chester and Morrow age in and adjacent to the Mount Judea and Snowball quadrangles in Newton and Searcy Counties. The locations of the sections are shown in figure 1 and are described in relation to topographic and cultural features shown on the topographic maps of the Mount Judea, Snowball, and Marshall, Arkansas, quadrangles and the Harrison, Arkansas-Missouri, quadrangle. S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency. Monthly water-level measurements were made in 201 wells, in 11 of which automatic water-level recorders were operated. Earlier measurements, covering the period 1941 through 1955, have been published in Geological Survey Water-Supply Papers; those for 1956 and 1957 have been released locally in duplicated form. Water-Supply Paper 1068 contains tabulated descriptions of 2,246 wells in existence in 1942 in the various ground-water basins of the county. The same publication also contains many water-level measurements made prior to 1942 by the city of Santa Barbara, Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District, San Joaquin Power Division of the Pacific Gas and Electric Co., Union Sugar Co., Union Oil Co., and other organizations and individuals.</p><p>Comprehensive reports on the geology and ground-water resources of the Santa Ynez River basin (Upson and Thomasson, 1951), the south-coast basins (Upson, 1951), the Santa Maria Valley area (Worts, 1951), and the Cuyama Valley (Upson and Worts, 1951) have been published as Water-Supply Papers 1107, 1108, 1000, and 1110-B, respectively. A report on stream runoff and ground-water storage capacity of the Santa Ynez River valley (Troxell and Wilson, 1952) was released to the open file in October 1952. A report appraising the ground-water resources of the Santa Ynez River valley (Wilson, 1957) has been mimeographed and released locally.</p><p>In addition to the water-level measurements made by the Geological Survey in 1958, measurements made by the Santa Maria Valley Water Conservation District are included in this report. S. Geological Survey investigations in the U12e.05 tunnel at the Atomic Energy Commission's Nevada Test Site, Nye County &amp; Nevada (fig. 1). Reports on electrical resistivity, natural radioactivity, and heat required to raise the rocks to 100&deg;C will be issued later. A preliminary report on the geologic effects of the Blanca event is being prepared.</p>\n<p>The U12e.05 tunnel, one of two laterals from the main U12e tunnel, trends west and connects with the main tunnel about U960 feet from the portal (fig. 2). The U12e.05 tunnel was driven for the nuclear test, code name Blanca, which took place on October 30, 1958. Before the explosion, the tunnel was 8 feet high and 8 to 9 feet wide and consisted of 990 feet of workings, a shot chamber, and an alcove (fig. 2). The original shot chamber, at the west end of the tunnel, was 19 feet long, 10 feet wide, and 15 feet high. The vertical and minimum cover over the original shot chamber are 1,150 and 950 feet, respectively.
