The total area of the district is 4,000 square miles. The entire district is drained by the Mississippi River and its tributaries. The central part is a rolling plain dissected to a depth of about 300 feet by the larger stream valleys. Marginal parts of the district are relatively hilly. Most of the district lies within the so-called \"Driftless Area\", but glacial deposits occur in the eastern, southeastern, and western fringes of the district. These methods are not applicable for regulated streams or for small-drainage areas (in general, less than 100 square miles). The determination of the magnitude of a flood of a selected frequency in the two-state area is accomplished by the use of composite frequency curves for 2 flood regions and curves showing variation of mean annual flood with drainage area for 9 hydrologic areas and 10 main-stem streams.</p>\n<p>These curves are based on all flood data collected in North and South Dakota with some use made of records from adjoining states. These data are tabulated in the report.</p>\n<p>Also included in the report is a tabulation of maximum flood experiences at gaging stations and outstanding floods at many miscellaneous S. Geological Survey, with the cooperation of the Arkansas Geological and Conservation Commission, has been engaged in stratigraphic investiqations in northern Arkansas to aid in the search for oil and gas. Seven reports of these investigations, including both surface and subsurface studies, have been completed (Lantz, 1950; Maher and Lantz, 1952, 1953a, 1953b; Glick and Frezon, 1953; Sheldon, 1954; Frezon and Glick, in press). This report, which was completed in 1955, presents the detailed stratigraphic sections used in correlating and mapping rocks of Chester and Morrow age in and adjacent to the Mount Judea and Snowball quadrangles in Newton and Searcy Counties. The locations of the sections are shown in figure 1 and are described in relation to topographic and cultural features shown on the topographic maps of the Mount Judea, Snowball, and Marshall, Arkansas, quadrangles and the Harrison, Arkansas-Missouri, quadrangle.
