Odhner had found the parasite in Blennius ocellaris at Naples. One adult specimen from Chrysophrys bifasciata and two immature specimens from lulis lunaris taken in the Red Sea, were described as a new species, Proctoeces erythraeus. Dawes (1946) listed P. erythraeus as a synonym of P. maculatus (Looss) , but the species was recognized by Manter ( 1947) on the basis of six specimens he had collected from Calamus calamus and Calamus bajonado at the biological laboratory of the Carnegie Institution at Dry Tortugas, Florida. Several additional species have been de scribed. Fujita ( 1925) reported a metacercaria from the Japanese oyster, Ostrea gigas, as a new species, Proctoeces ostreae. The paper was translated by R. Ph. Several specimens from Pagrosomus auratus, which differed from P. maculatus in larger size, larger eggs, and trilobed ovary, he described as a new species, Proctoeces major. Yamaguti ( 1938) reported P. nzaculatus from Sensicossyphus reticulatus and described a larva from the liver of the pelecypod mollusk, Brachidontes senhausi, as an unidentified member of the genus Proctoeces. Manter ( 1940) described Proctoeces tnagnorus from a single specimen found in the intestine of Caulolatilus ano,nalus, taken at Cerros Island, Mexico. Hanson ( 1950) identified two specimens collected from Calamus sp. at Bermuda by the late F. D. Barker as Distontuni subtenue Linton, 1907, a species described originally from Calantus calanius in the same area. Comparison of these specimens with those from Tortugas identified by Manter as P. erythraeus established their identity, and P. erythraeus was suppressed as a synonym of Proctoeces subtenue (Linton, 1907). Hanson corrected the statement of Manter (1947), noting that it is the vitellaria, not the uterus, which never extends into the post testicular region.
","language":"English","publisher":"Marine Biological Laboratory","doi":"10.2307/1539166","usgsCitation":"Stunkard, H.W., and Uzmann, J., 1959, The life-cycle of the digenetic trematode, Proctoeces maculatus (Looss, 1901) Odhner, 1911 (Syn. The measurement program was begun on its present scale in the latter part of 1948 by the U. S. Geological Survey at the request of the U. S. Bureau of Reclamation and has been continued under a cooperative agreement with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency since July 1, 1949, under which each agency pays half the cost of the investigation.

The purpose of the program is to obtain factual data to assist in determining what effect, if any, the inflow of ground water into Tecolote Tunnel will have on surface-water resources in the vicinity of the tunnel. The area involved in the program, shown on plate 1, was made large enough to include a number of springs and streams believed to be outside the zone of influence of the tunnel. Tecolote Tunnel, completed in March 1956, was built by the Bureau of Reclamation for the purpose of conveying water from Cachuma Reservoir to the city of Santa Barbara and adjacent coastal communities. The alinement of the tunnel is essentially north and south through the center of a region that extends from the Painted Cave area on the east to Refugio Pass on the west and from the Santa Ynez River on the north to the Pacific Ocean on the south. Storage, in Cachuma Reservoir began November 16, 1952. Roads within the area covered by Cachuma Reservoir have been relocated since plate 1 was prepared.

The purpose of this progress report is to make available the factual data obtained from July 1956 to June 1958.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Geological Survey","doi":"10.3133/ofr59134","collaboration":"Prepared in cooperation with the Santa Barbara County Water Agency","usgsCitation":"Peterson, W.C., 1959, Eighth progress report on the cooperative investigation of springs and streamflow in the Tecolote Tunnel area of Santa Barbara County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Open-File Report 59-134, Report: 135 p.; 1 Plate: 25.22 x 19.18 inches, https://doi.org/10.3133/ofr59134.","productDescription":"Report: 135 p.; 1 Plate: 25.22 x 19.18 inches","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":462700,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1959/0134/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":462699,"rank":1,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1959/0134/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":462701,"rank":3,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/of/1959/0134/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"50000","country":"United States","state":"California","county":"Santa Barbara County","otherGeospatial":"Tecolote Tunnel area","geographicExtents":"{\n  \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\",\n  \"features\": [\n    {\n      \"type\": \"Feature\",\n      \"properties\": {},\n      \"geometry\": {\n        \"coordinates\": [\n          [\n            [\n              -120.61474653419313,\n              35.107477322182945\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.61474653419313,\n              33.603227658961316\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.21258359397822,\n              33.603227658961316\n            ],\n            [\n              -119.21258359397822,\n              35.107477322182945\n            ],\n            [\n              -120.61474653419313,\n              35.107477322182945\n            ]\n          ]\n        ],\n        \"type\": \"Polygon\"\n      }\n    }\n  ]\n}","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Peterson, William C.","contributorId":54970,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Peterson","given":"William","email":"","middleInitial":"C.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":915314,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}

The intensity of magnetization of all the tektites measured is zero or very small.

For comparison, the same measurements have been made on about thirty obsidians. The magnetic susceptibilities cover approximately the same range, but the intensity of magnetization of the impurity was found to be much higher. By heating the obsidians to 1450°C the intensity of magnetization was reduced to zero.

From the above data, it is shown that the tektites must have been heated well above 1400°C, and that essentially all the iron is in solution. On the other hand, the evidence shows that obsidians have not been heated much above this temperature, and that there is a significant amount of undissolved iron in the glass, probably as magnetite. Association of ferroselite with selenian pyrite and marcasite within discrete areas of these uranium-vanadium deposits suggests an unusual environment of formation. Its association with apparent low temperature assemblages in the United States and Bussia indicates that its minimum temperature of formation is quite low. Chemical analyses of ferroselite agree well with the theoretical formula FeSe2; material from the Virgin no. 3 mine, Montrose County, Colorado, gives the formula FeSe2.07 and that from the A.E.C. no. 8 mine, Temple Mountain, Utah, gives the formula (Fe, Co)Se2.08. The similarity of hastite and ferroselite suggests that a complete series FeSe2-CoSe2 may exist. In contrast to this, pyrite associated with ferroselite apparently will camouflage only 4 per cent (molecular) FeSe2 within its structure. Ferroselite cannot be distinguished from rammelsbergite (FeAs2) by X-ray or in polished section; therefore, the exact identification of these two minerals can be made only by specific tests for As or Se. As hastite (CoSe2) and marcasite are in the same structure group as ferroselite and rammelsbergite, identification of these minerals should include qualitative chemical determinations.
","language":"English","publisher":"Elsevier","doi":"10.1016/0016-7037(59)90116-4","usgsCitation":"Coleman, R.G., 1959, New occurrences of ferroselite (FeSe2): Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta, v. 16, no. 4, p. 296-301, https://doi.org/10.1016/0016-7037(59)90116-4.","productDescription":"6 p.","startPage":"296","endPage":"301","numberOfPages":"6","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":219037,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"}],"volume":"16","issue":"4","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"505a65f3e4b0c8380cd72cb0","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Coleman, R. Chemical properties are described and infrared spectra are presented in support of this structure. This structure is of interest in relation to the problem of the existence of o-di-tert-alkylbenzene derivatives. The relatively easy racemization of optically active I suggests that its completely enolized form, 5,6-di-tert-butyl-1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene, is capable of transitory existence.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Organic Chemistry","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"American Chemical Society","doi":"10.1021/jo01091a023","issn":"00223263","usgsCitation":"Yohe, G.R., Dunbar, J., Lansford, M., Pedrotti, R.L., Scheidt, F.M., Lee, F.G., and Smith, E.C., 1959, Oxidation of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol.
