He was near the present site of Wichita, Kansas, in 1601, when he arrived a t a large rancheria, or temporary Indian camp, containing more than 5000 souls. Onate's account expressed wonderment at the great extent of the level land, a t the numerous small streams bordered with luxuriant groves of trees, and, of course, at the large number of buffalo.

We shall never see the wonderland of the blossoming prairie which he described as follows: Grazing for the horses \"had been lacking for several days, as there had been none for many leagues, for the fields there were covered with flowers of a thousand different kinds, so thick that they choked the pasture \" (1, p. 256).

We who fly from Chicago to Denver in a few hours cannot get the same view of the western grasslands as those who, with rifle or sword in hand, moved at the rate of 10 to 15 miles a day.

The tall- and short-grass prairies of the West comprise more than 700,000 square miles in the United States alone, not to mention the great prong extending northward into Canada. Such an area represents nearly a quarter of the United States. There are areas other than prairie where grass is an important natural resource. Among these should be mentioned the grass openings in woodland and along the borders of desert shrub associations in the plateau and basin-and-range provinces. So considered, the western grassed areas constitute even a larger proportion of our country.

This vast domain has problems commensurate in complexity with its geographic scope, and these are in part related to the changes which have occurred since settlement. Drill holes averaged about 100 feet in depth; the majority are located around the margins of the dry lake. The saline deposit consists of an upper salt body about 39 square miles in area, of which 12 square miles are exposed in the central part of the lake, and a lower salt body of approximately the same areal extent found at greater depth. The 2 salt bodies are separated by a seam of clay or marl averaging about 12 feet thick. Isopach maps show the salt bodies are slightly elongated to the north; maximum thicknesses of the upper and lower salt bodies are 95 and 54 feet, respectively. Core logs, in written and graphic form, show the chief minerals of the saline bodies are halite, trona, hanksite, borax, and burkeite; relatively minor quantities of 13 additional minerals are described. It is a narrow, eastwest area about 20 miles long and lies mainly in southwestern Brewster County. The district is connected by graded road with the nearest railroad, 84 miles north of its center. Quicksilver minerals were first discovered in the district in the latter part of the 19th century, but there was no substantial production until 1900. Although there are about 20 mines and many prospects, more than 90 percent of the quicksilver came from the Chisos-Rainbow, Mariposa, and Study Butte mines. The most productive years were during World War I; since 1946 the district has been idle. Future production depends upon the discovery of new ore bodies-which will be costly-and the working of deposits now considered of too low grade to be profitable.","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/pp312","usgsCitation":"Yates, R., and Thompson, G.A., 1959, Geology and quicksilver deposits of the Terlingua district, Texas: U.S. Geological Survey Professional Paper 312, Report: v, 114 p.; 14 Plates: 51.43 x 14.70 inches or smaller, https://doi.org/10.3133/pp312.","productDescription":"Report: v, 114 p.; 14 Plates: 51.43 x 14.70 inches or smaller","numberOfPages":"130","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":104427,"rank":700,"type":{"id":36,"text":"NGMDB Index Page"},"url":"https://ngmdb.usgs.gov/Prodesc/proddesc_4295.htm","linkFileType":{"id":5,"text":"html"}},{"id":402000,"rank":15,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-20.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401998,"rank":12,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-17.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401996,"rank":14,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-19.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401999,"rank":13,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-18.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401989,"rank":6,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-11.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401990,"rank":4,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-1.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401992,"rank":7,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-12.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401991,"rank":5,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-10.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401993,"rank":9,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-14.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401997,"rank":11,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-16.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401994,"rank":8,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-13.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":401995,"rank":10,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-15.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":172862,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":271157,"rank":2,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402002,"rank":17,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-22.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":402001,"rank":16,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/pp/0312/plate-21.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"scale":"31680","country":"United States","state":"Texas","otherGeospatial":"Terlingua District","geographicExtents":"{ \"type\": \"FeatureCollection\", \"features\": [ { \"type\": \"Feature\", \"properties\": {}, \"geometry\": { \"type\": \"Polygon\", \"coordinates\": [ [ [ -105,29 ], [ -105,30.5 ], [ -102,30.5 ], [ -102,29 ], [ -105,29 ] ] ] } } ] }","noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad6e4b07f02db6842b8","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Yates, Robert G.","contributorId":69525,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Yates","given":"Robert G.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":222108,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Thompson, George A.","contributorId":94288,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Thompson","given":"George","email":"","middleInitial":"A.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":222109,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2}]}}

These 3 dry lakes lie in a chain of basins having a drainage area of 4,000 square miles which is made up of alluvial slopes and of mountains composed of granitic, metamorphic, and volcanic rocks. Rainfall in the basins averages less than 3 inches annually.

In Bristol Dry Lake, 1 hole was drilled to a depth of 1,007 feet, and penetrated layers of dense clay alternating with salt. About 40 percent of the recovered core is halite, ranging from scattered crystals in clay to massive beds more than 8 feet thick. In Cadiz Dry Lake, 1 hole was drilled to a depth of 500 feet. The core is composed of clay, silt, and sand, with scattered gypsum crystals in small quantities, and a single salt layer, 1 foot thick, lying about 9 feet below the surface. Bedding in this core is horizontal down to a fracture at a depth of about 256 feet; from there to the bottom, the dip increases gradually to a maximum of 35°. In Danby Dry Lake, 2 holes were drilled: the first and more northerly one to a depth of 880 feet and the southerly one to a depth of 460 feet. 'Both cores are composed of clastic sediments ranging from clay to coarse sand with fine sand the most abundant. Crystalline gypsum in silt occurs between 310 and 520 feet in the northern hole and between 278 arid 334 feet in the southern hole. The northern hole was drilled in gravel for the last 20 feet. No salt beds were cut in either of the Danby holes despite the occurrence of commercial salt deposits elsewhere on the surface of the playa. Correlation of sediments between any of these cores, even between those from the same basin, is difficult and seldom convincing.

Fossils were found in the Cadiz core and in both Danby cores. The most abundant fossils are Chara, the calcified seeds of the Charophyta algae. Foraminifers, ostracodes, gastropods, pelecypods, and barnacles, in order of decreasing abundance, occur at rare intervals in these three cores.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Government Printing Office","doi":"10.3133/b1045D","usgsCitation":"Bassett, A.M., Kupfer, D., and Barstow, F., 1959, Core logs from Bristol, Cadiz, and Danby Dry Lakes, San Bernardino County, California: U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1045, 46 p.; 1 Plate, https://doi.org/10.3133/b1045D.","productDescription":"46 p.; 1 Plate","startPage":"97","endPage":"138","costCenters":[],"links":[{"id":61621,"rank":400,"type":{"id":17,"text":"Plate"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1045a/plate-04.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}},{"id":163950,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1045d/report-thumb.jpg"},{"id":96084,"rank":300,"type":{"id":11,"text":"Document"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/bul/1045d/report.pdf","linkFileType":{"id":1,"text":"pdf"}}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4ad8e4b07f02db684a3a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Bassett, Allan Mordorf","contributorId":92315,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Bassett","given":"Allan","email":"","middleInitial":"Mordorf","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":211872,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1},{"text":"Kupfer, D.H.","contributorId":83935,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Kupfer","given":"D.H.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":211871,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":2},{"text":"Barstow, F.C.","contributorId":64305,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Barstow","given":"F.C.","email":"","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":211870,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":3}]}}

Chemical properties are described and infrared spectra are presented in support of this structure. This structure is of interest in relation to the problem of the existence of o-di-tert-alkylbenzene derivatives. The relatively easy racemization of optically active I suggests that its completely enolized form, 5,6-di-tert-butyl-1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene, is capable of transitory existence.","largerWorkType":{"id":2,"text":"Article"},"largerWorkTitle":"Journal of Organic Chemistry","largerWorkSubtype":{"id":10,"text":"Journal Article"},"language":"English","publisher":"American Chemical Society","doi":"10.1021/jo01091a023","issn":"00223263","usgsCitation":"Yohe, G.R., Dunbar, J., Lansford, M., Pedrotti, R.L., Scheidt, F.M., Lee, F.G., and Smith, E.C., 1959, Oxidation of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol. Applications of resistivity measurements on Appalachian streams are discussed.
","language":"English","publisher":"U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service","publisherLocation":"Washington, D.C.","usgsCitation":"Lennon, R.E., 1959, The electrical resistivity meter in fishery investigations: Special Scientific Report - Fisheries 287, 13 p.","productDescription":"13 p.","costCenters":[{"id":606,"text":"Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center","active":true,"usgs":true}],"links":[{"id":198655,"rank":0,"type":{"id":24,"text":"Thumbnail"},"url":"https://pubs.usgs.gov/thumbnails/outside_thumb.jpg"},{"id":351878,"rank":2,"type":{"id":15,"text":"Index Page"},"url":"https://spo.nmfs.noaa.gov/SSRF/SSRF287.pdf"}],"noUsgsAuthors":false,"publicationStatus":"PW","scienceBaseUri":"4f4e4a9be4b07f02db65dd4a","contributors":{"authors":[{"text":"Lennon, Robert E.","contributorId":14341,"corporation":false,"usgs":true,"family":"Lennon","given":"Robert","email":"","middleInitial":"E.","affiliations":[],"preferred":false,"id":325345,"contributorType":{"id":1,"text":"Authors"},"rank":1}]}}
